5 Abbott Nutrition Adult Nutritional Products Guide EXPIRATION DATES To assure the highest quality, use the formula by the date shown on the product. The vitamin content and the physical stability of the product cannot be guaranteed beyond the Use By date because both may degrade with time. RECOMMENDED STORAGE GUIDELINES FOR ABBOTT NUTRITION NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS RECOMMENDED STORAGE TEMPERATURES FOR UNOPENED PRODUCTS: LIQUID FORMULAS: The general recommended storage temperatures of nutritional products are between 0 and 35 C. The most desirable temperature range for storage of unopened containers is between 13 and 24 C. Storage at these temperatures will assure the highest quality product, both aesthetically and nutritionally. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 0 C or to direct heat above 35 C could affect the physical consistency of the product. While the product within the sealed container is sterile and of sound nutritional quality, a change in the consistency of the product could temporarily affect the appearance, flavour, and other sensory attributes. We therefore do not recommend use of product exposed to adverse temperature. Do not freeze Abbott Nutrition nutritional formulas. POWDER FORMULAS: Store nutritional powder products in a dry, cool area. Do not store the actual can of powder in the refrigerator. Powdered formulas should be used within 1 month after opening. RECOMMENDED STORAGE OF OPENED PRODUCTS: 1,2 LIQUID FORMULAS: If cans are used, clean the top of cans thoroughly before opening. Once product is opened: - Use immediately or refrigerate within 2 hours - Discard refrigerated product after 48 hours When product is consumed directly from the can or bottle or through a straw: - Use immediately or refrigerate within 1 hour - Consume refrigerated product within 24 hours Drinking directly from the can or bottle or through a straw exposes product to significant amounts of oral bacteria and therefore reduces storages times. POWDER FORMULAS: Reconstituted formulas, such as Vital HN and Polycose powder, should be poured into cups, capped, and stored in the refrigerator. Use any opened, reconstituted product within: - 24 hours if stored in the refrigerator - 2 hours if left out at room temperature REFERENCES: 1. 6 Abbott Nutrition Adult Nutritional Products Guide HANG TIME FOR ABBOTT NUTRITION NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS 1,2 OPEN SYSTEM: Ready-to-feed formulas: Medical literature suggests that the following hang times are acceptable for commercially sterile ready-to-feed nutritional products when carefully poured from the packaged container into a tube-feeding setup. - 8 to 12 hours for adult patients - 4 to 8 hours for pediatric patients Reconstituted formulas: Any enteral nutrition formulas that are modified in any way should be prepared using aseptic technique and should hang for no more than 4 hours. This includes the addition of powder formulas and any feedings to which other ingredients are added. All devices/tubing for an open system are to be changed after no more than 24 hours. CLOSED SYSTEM: Ready-to-Hang products: Hang product according to the following recommendations when a new Ready-to-Hang container, a new feeding set and aseptic technique are used. Otherwise, hang no longer than 24 hours hours when a feeding set with piercing pin is used - 24 hours when a feeding set with screw cap is used In each healthcare facility, it is important to involve the appropriate professionals in developing procedures for using safe technique in the preparation and use of tube feedings and in setting quality assurance protocols for monitoring those techniques. This practice exposes the product to significant amounts of bacteria. Other ingredients may include nutritional liquids, powders or supplemental foods such as Ready-to-Feed or powder formula, Polycose, oils and other nutrient modules (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, fat). Use under medical supervision. While many Abbott Nutrition nutritional formulas are designed to meet specific needs of patients with certain conditions, the choice of the optimal product for a patient must be based on patient-specific information and clinical judgment. Never use a microwave oven to warm formula. Serious burns can result. Adult nutritional products are not intended for use in children unless recommended by a physician or qualified health care professional. 6

7 Abbott Nutrition Adult Nutritional Products Guide LACTOSE CONTENT OF ABBOTT NUTRITION PRODUCTS All Abbott Nutrition products with the exception of Polycose and Isomil contain some milk protein. With improvements in testing methodology, low levels of lactose in the products can now be detected. Most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate some amount of lactose in their diet. A review of the medical and scientific literature 1,2 indicates that most lactose intolerant patients can tolerate up to 6 grams of lactose per serving. Abbott Nutrition adult nutritional products contain less than 500 mg of lactose per serving and are therefore suitable for most people with lactose intolerance. However, such products are not suitable for patients with galactosemia. Not suitable for galactosemia will be clearly indicated on the label. 62 RECOMMENDED STORAGE GUIDELINES FOR ABBOTT NUTRITION PEDIATRIC PRODUCTS Please refer to the product label for the most current storage guidelines. The following storage guidelines apply to all Abbott Nutrition Infant products, including Pedialyte. RECOMMENDED TEMPERATURES: It is generally recommended that sealed Abbott Nutrition infant and pediatric formulas be stored at temperatures between 0 and 35 C. However, to assure the highest quality product, both aesthetically and nutritionally, the most desirable storage temperature range is between 13 and 24 C. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 0 C or to direct heat above 35 C could affect the physical consistency of the product. While the product within the sealed container is sterile and of sound nutritional quality, a change in the consistency of the product could affect its appearance, flavour, and other sensory attributes. It is therefore not recommended to use product exposed to adverse temperatures. Do not freeze Abbott Nutrition infant formulas. Information specific to powder products: Store pediatric powder products in a dry, cool area. Do not store the actual can of powder in the refrigerator. GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION: Ready-to-Use Formula Prepared bottles and opened cans (covered) should be refrigerated and used within 48 hours. Once the can or bottle (120 ml or 59 ml) of ready-to-use formula is opened, it should be used immediately or refrigerated. However, if formula (in bottle or can) is left at room temperature, Health Canada* and the CFIA** recommend that it be used within 2 hours. Reconstituted pediatric formula (including concentrated formula and powder) should be prepared as per label, poured into individual feeding bottles or cups, capped and stored in the refrigerator. Concentrate Prepared formula should be refrigerated and used within 48 hours. Opened can (undiluted) should be covered, refrigerated and used within 48 hours. If undiluted or prepared formula is left at room temperature, Health Canada* and the CFIA** recommend that it be used within 2 hours. Powder Prepared bottles should be refrigerated and used within 24 hours. However, if prepared bottle is left at room temperature, Health Canada* and the CFIA** recommend that it be used within 2 hours. Opened cans of powder should be kept covered and used within one month of opening. AFTER FEEDING: Throw away any formula remaining in the bottle within 1 hour from the time the baby s mouth comes into contact with the nipple. Do not refrigerate and reheat unused formula. 63 HANG TIME FOR ABBOTT NUTRITION PEDIATRIC PRODUCTS The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests that a hang time of 4 to 8 hours is acceptable for commercially sterile ready-to-feed products when carefully poured from the packaged container into a tube-feeding setup. This includes ready-to-feed infant formulas, Pedialyte, PediaSure, PediaSure Fibre and PediaSure Plus (with fibre). Any feedings that are reconstituted with water or modified in any way should be prepared using aseptic technique and should hang for no more than 4 hours. This includes concentrated liquid and powder formulas, fortified human milk, and any feedings to which other ingredients*** are added. In each health care facility, it is important to involve the appropriate professionals in developing procedures for using safe techniques in the preparation and use of tube feedings and in setting quality assurance protocols for monitoring those techniques. EXPIRATION DATES To assure the highest quality, use the formula by the date shown on the product. The vitamin content and the physical stability of the product cannot be guaranteed beyond the Use By date because both may degrade with time. * Discard perishable food that has been allowed to sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. ** Foods containing bacteria that can cause foodborne illness can't be in the "Danger Zone" (less than 60 C or 140 F or above 4 C or 40 F) longer than 2 hours. Bacteria multiply rapidly and can reach dangerous levels at this stage. *** Other ingredients may include Polycose or human milk fortifiers.
