1 Burning CDs Using Nero The computers in the HUB have been upgraded, and each computer in the room now offers the user the capability of burning to a CD-R or CD-RW by using a software program called Nero. The Nero program has some features that may or may not work with the current HUB Windows computer configuration. The software on the HUB computers will not be installed or upgraded in order to use all the features, but you will be able to burn data to both CD-R and CD-RW discs, as well as to make backup copies, if the original discs are not copyprotected.. CD-R and CD-RW Media CD-R burners using CD-R discs make permanent (write-once) recordings. Use a CD-R disc if you want to archive data: text, photographs, scanned documents, music CDs, or other large files. If you plan to use your CDs in other computers, use the CD-R burner, because some CD players and CD- ROM drives have trouble with CD-RW discs. CD-RW discs work well for backing up data that you may want to edit. If you use a CD-RW disc on the same computer all the time, then you should have no problem with it. CD-RW discs cost more than CD-R discs. Starting NERO Double-click on the Nero STARTSMART icon on the desktop. You can also start Nero by placing a blank CD in the CD-ROM drive. After a short time, you will see a message appear on the monitor asking what you want to do. Of the choices offered, click on BURN A NEW CD. Then, pick a task. 3. And click to get started.

2 Star icon (Favorites) Clicking on the STAR icon gives you the following list of features (the choices you will frequently use are Make Data Disc and Copy Disc): Make Data Disc Make Audio CD Make Video CD (The HUB does not have software to support this.) Copy Disc Make Data Disc When you click MAKE DATA DISC, you will see the DISC CONTENT window (pictured below). Click the MORE button. An Additional window drops from the bottom of the DISC CONTENT window. In that window, you see additional options for the date and time for your file name. If you are using a CD-RW disc, you can click the ERASE DISC icon to erase the disc before burning new data.

3 Add data to your layout for recording to disc 1. Click the ADD button. A window similar to the one pictured at right opens. 2. Browse to locate and select the files and/or folders containing data that you want to burn to disc. 3. Highlight the files and/or folders. 4. Click the ADD button on the SELECT FILES window to add more files or folders. 5. When finished selecting all the files you want to burn on the current disc, click the FINISHED button. 6. You are back at the DISC CONTENT window. Click NEXT to prepare your disc for burning. Prepare your disc for burning On the FINAL BURN SETTINGS window, see the following items: Cur urrent Recorder. The supported burner you have connected to your Windows computer will be displayed. The Image Recorder is available if you chose to save to your hard drive. However, in the HUB, please do not save your data to the hard drives in this room. If you save any files, please save them to the hard drive of your own computer. Disc Name ame. You may select a title for your disc here. Writing iting ing Speed. Select the speed in which you would like to burn. If you experience buffer underruns, try reducing the burn speed of the burner. Number umber r of Copies. Select the number of copies you would like to burn. Allow low files t to be e added dded d later r (multisession disc: CD-RW). This feature can be selected or cleared. Verify ify data on disc after r burning. This feature can be selected or cleared. It is a good idea to verify the data on the disc after burning. A screen picture of the FINAL BURN SETTINGS window can be seen on the following page. When you are ready to burn and click the MORE button at the FINAL BURN SETTINGS window, another window will appear tacked onto the bottom of the FINAL BURN SETTINGS window with these additional features. Track-At-Once. With this method, each track is individually written onto the disc. The write operation is briefly interrupted after each track. This means that a CD-R or CD-RW can be written on just like any standard disc.

4 Disc-At-Once. e. In this mode, all of the tracks are written in a single process onto the disc without the laser being switched off. This format is best for audio CD s that will be played in home and car stereo equipment. Finalize e Disc isc. The disc will be closed and no additional data or audio can be written to the disc after finalizing it. Remove move e silence nce e at e end of *.cda t tracks. Each audio track when written will have a two-second gap at the end. When checked, this silence is removed. Burn the data disc When ready to record, click the BURN button. See above a screen picture of the FINAL BURN SETTINGS window.

5 As you are burning your disc, you will see a status window of the recording process entitled BURNING PROCESS. Below see a picture of the BURNING PROCESS window. When the burning process is completed, you will be notified that the burn process has completed successfully. When you click the OK button, you will be returned back to the recording window. When you click NEXT, you will see this window. If you would like to burn the same project again, start another project, make labels, or add more data to your current disc (CD- RW), it can be done from this window. When finished, click EXIT.

6 Make a Copy of a Disc for Backup Use the COPY DISC feature to copy the contents of an entire disc to a blank CD. If you are backing up a disc or making a copy for your personal use, this feature allows you to make an efficient exact copy. The computers in the HUB have only one drive for burning CDs, and this drive will be used for both the source (the disc you are copying from) and the destination (the blank disc you are copying to). 1. Click the FAVORITES icon. 2. Click the COPY DISC icon. 3. The SELECT SOURCE AND DESTINATION window displays. See the screen picture below.

7 4. If you have only one drive that will serve for both the source and destination drives, be sure the disc you want to copy from is inserted in the CD-R/CD-RW drive on your computer. 5. When you click the MORE button, you will have these options: Determine maximum speed. When checked, the software will determine the safest maximum speed for burning your disc. Simulation. ion. When checked, the software will simulate an actual burn to disc without actually writing to it. Write. ite. When checked, the software will immediately burn to disc. 6. When you are ready to record, click the BURN button. The source disc will first be analyzed to check for copyrights and errors on the disc. 7. When the program is ready to burn to the blank disc, the source disc drive opens, and you will be instructed to place a blank disc in the drive and close it. 8. As the burning process continues, you will see a status window of the recording process.

8 9. When the burning process is completed, you will be notified. Click the OK button. When you click the OK button, you will be returned back to the recording window. 10. Click Next to move forward to the window which asks, What do you want to do now? 11. If you want to burn the same project again, select the appropriate icon. 12. When finished, click the Exit button. Saving Projects Even though you can save your projects to a computer hard drive, do not do so in the HUB. Others use these computers. You may wish to save your project on a USB Flash drive, which is removable, to use at a later time.
