Microsoft Terminal Server and Jetro CockpIT: A Comparison Terminal Server Jetro CockpIT Effect on the Enterprise Designed for Web servers Directs users to servers with the least network activity and with the most available resources. Note: A user is connected to the most available server when he requests his first application session. Every application he requests from that point onward will also come from that server, regardless of whether or not the server is still the most available server in the server farm. Designed for the serverbased computing environment Allows administrators to choose from hundreds of possible factors that will determine a server s availability. -based load balancing: a user receives applications from the most available server every time he requests a new application Enterprises with Terminal Server alone are using the wrong tool for a very important task. Within any network farm servers will either be overburdened or under-utilized resulting in lower overall system This problem is magnified in server farms with servers of varying configurations and capabilities. The problem can also be exacerbated when applications have high CPU utilization but only generate a small amount of network activity or in situations when applications require little CPU but generate a large amount of network activity. Flexibility One standard load balancing policy for all servers. Customization possibilities are only marginally relevant to the server-based computing Administrator chooses from hundreds of possible factors to create a customized load balancing policy. Different servers may have different load balancing policies. CockpIT is better able to recognize how busy each server truly is. This means that servers will be used more effectively. Users will always connect to the optimal server for the application requested. This capability is most noticeable when an enterprise uses multiple applications with different performance behaviors. Desktop versus Desktop-based All applications must be installed on all servers. -based Servers can host one application or any combination of applications and can be configured to optimize network CockpIT allows customization that enables optimal network Sometimes applications cannot be installed on the same server because: version conflicts, resource usage, security or testing purposes. Publishing Easier set-up Easier configuration Easier to monitor usage CockpIT has immediate application deployment!
Control of Properties Administrators cannot customize parameters like color depth, local disk mapping, printer mapping, and application resolution for individual users or applications. Administrators can create customized application properties for individual users, user groups, applications and application groups Improve network and application performance by customizing application properties to fit different operating conditions. Content Redirection Enable servers to deliver specified content to local workstations and execute that content locally Multi-media files do not function well over normal RDP connections. Content redirection lets users enjoy full multi-media functionality in an RDP server-based computing Running these files on the server can reduce server Redirecting these files improves server performance and reliability. Comprehensive Printing Solution A different printer driver must be installed on every terminal server for every network and local printer. Universal printer driver Print job compression Jetro CockpIT enables enterprise users to print over low bandwidth on any printing device in the enterprise with almost no administrator intervention. A single universal printer driver takes the places of tens or even hundreds of individual printer drivers. User Experience Looks like a complete Windows desktop inside of an original Windows desktop Difficult for users to integrate data from remote sessions to local computers. It s confusing to try to navigate on two desktops at once and folders appear in CockpIT Virtual Desktops Or Desktop icons link directly to server-based applications form the user's local Start menu or local desktop With CockpIT, users are more comfortable and more effective because applications are easier to access and easier to work with. RDP Seamless s look and function like locally installed applications With CockpIT, users adjust more quickly to server-based computing and are more comfortable with server-based applications. 2
Client Installation Terminal Server client software must be manually installed on every user workstation Jetro Client is an ActiveX plug-in. It installs and updates automatically as soon as the user logs into the CockpIT System. CockpIT saves administrators time and eliminates the possibility of installation errors. Web Interface Terminal Server sessions look like conventional Windows Desktops. CockpIT Virtual Desktops can be customized to match the look and feel of the enterprise intranet or other theme. Enterprise graphic scheme can be incorporated into the CockpIT Virtual Desktop. Monitoring Every server generates a usage list Searchable inventory of all activity on the entire server-farm in real time Real-time load monitoring Server activity can be queried by server, user, or a number of other search items CockpIT gives administrators the resources to be more responsive to the needs of the enterprise. Reporting No historical reporting available Customize reports of historical data based on a variety of features such as server-user, user activity, application use, etc. Reports export easily to MS Excel and other database and billing programs CockpIT's customizable reports enable administrators and management to use software licenses more effectively. s Through Desktop Icons Users access server-based application through icons in the Windows Start menu folder Icons can be dragged to the user s desktop or placed into folders for even easier access Easier access to applications minimizes computing errors and improves worker efficiency in the CockpIT Multi- Protocol Delivery RDP applications only RDP ICA HTTP Local s CockpIT leverages existing server-based computing licenses and centralizes control over all enterprise computing. 3
Availability Control Define when an application will be available CockpIT improves enterprise security by preventing access to applications at unusual times (e.g. access to financial documents late at night or early in the morning on weekends) Administrative Web based console Administrator uses a userfriendly graphic interface to configure which applications should be sent when where to whom and how (from which servers and on which paths) CockpIT's graphic interface makes administrative errors less likely and substantially reduces the time it takes to publish, administrate, and manage applications. I.E. it requires only one click to disable a server or application in a case of required maintenance. Local s Local applications can be managed from the centralized CockpIT Server. CockpIT allows enterprises to migrate to server-based computing gradually. One portion of the enterprise can use server-based applications and the rest can continue to use local applications. All user workstations will be managed through the CockpIT Administrator Console. Web-based applications CockpIT can administrate links to any Internet site, application, or content. CockpIT centralizes control over all network computing. This allows administrators to better manage resources and solve network problems more efficiently Quickly and easily view the following information: applications that a user can access CockpIT administrators can more effectively respond to user complaints and more easily understand network configurations. Effective User Rights all groups to which the user is a member members of groups all of the applications that group members can access 4
Dashboard Dashboard Provides a full remote desktop management for users. Dashboard lists the allowed applications on the background of the desktop and links users to remote terminal servers. Sometimes it is preferred to provide users with a remote full desktop (i.e. with thin clients environment). Dashboard simplifies the desktop management and eliminate the need to manage each user start menu. At the same time it preserves the application publishing flexibility not to install all applications on each terminal server. CockpIT Secure Connector (CSC) CSC provides greater security for remote users by: hiding the internal terminal servers from a direct access (as mail relays protects mail servers). Ecrypting the communication with 128 bit encryption and ensuring the user identity by combining a third party two factor authentication device (smart cards) Connecting remote users is risky but important. CockpIT provides a safe and easy path to implement remote access. CockpIT Universal Connector (CUC) Managing thin clients environment and any other OS or device is easy using the CUC. The CUC provides load balancing and user environment without installing any software component on the client device. Only RDP client is required The unique CockpIT universal technology allows easy and cost effective implementation of thin client from any vendor and any model type. s limits CockpIT allows administrators to limit the number of application instances a user can execute at the same time, can be run on a server and in the whole site. CockpIT controls the application usage and licensing, limits the load per user and server and improves the overall 5
