BIM roles & responsibilities Getting prepared for the principal data drops when working in a BIM context? TEAM-IT August 2014
Preparation RIBA stages A & B A Appraisal B Design Brief Client need Business case Life cycle FM aspirations Sustainability Dev. Statement of requirements Dev. Design brief [PD] Identify procurement method BIM & Sustainability procedures Bldg. Design life Project organisation & responsibilities [WBS] Advise client BIM purpose, benefits & implications Agree level 4D, 5D or 6D? Advise on Integrated Team, scope of service, incl. specialists and BIM model manager Define long term responsibilities And model ownership Define BIM inputs and outputs Scope post occupancy surveys BIM surveys & investigation reports DATA DROP 1
Design RIBA stage C C - Concept Design Implementation Agree PQP, incl. BIM and Change control procedures Concept design incl. environment and service plans, site ecology Prep. Prelim. cost & energy plans BIM Pre-start meetings Initial model strategic analysis appraisal by team BIM model use environmental performance Identify key model elements e.g. prefab elements, create concept level parametric objects for major elements Enable design team to access BIM data Agree extent of performance specified work DATA DROP 2
Design RIBA stage D & E D Design Development E Technical Design Develop concept design using Project BIM data Include structural & environmental strategies, service systems, site landscape & ecology Update outline specs, cost & energy Plans Complete project brief [PD or PID] Application for detailed planning Technical design Prep technical design & specs sufficient to:- co-ord components & elements of Project; BIM data and info for statutory standards; sustainability assessment and construction safety Data sharing & info for design co-ord analysis & links between models Integrate & develop generic / bespoke design components BIM data used for environmental performance and area analysis Data sharing for design co-ord technical analysis & addition of specification data Export data for planning applic. 4D & 5D assessments DATA DROP 3
Preconstruction RIBA F, G & H F Production Info G Tender Docs H Tender Action F1 Prep. Production info Dev. BIM data to conclude co-ord. design inputs & enable start perf. spec. Work Enable tenders to be obtained Application for statutory approvals F2 Prep. info for construction as required by build contract Dev. BIM data to integrate performance spec. work into model Review BIM info from contractors/specialists include integration into model G Prep. tender docs to enable tenders to be obtained H Evaluate contractors / specialists Appraise tenders, make recommendations to the client Export data for building control analysis Data sharing to conclude design co-ord. & detail analysis with subcontractors Create production level parametric objects for all major elements [can use supplier Tier 2 info] Embed specification to model Final review and model sign off Enable contractor access to model Integration of sub-contractor perf. specified work model info into BIM model Review construction sequence 4 D with contractor DATA DROP 4
Parametrics r2h = volume of a cylinder Different values of r and h produce different sizes and proportions of the cylinder The equation can represent a whole family of pipework as we add data e.g. Material type copper or plastic, internal or external diameters etc
Objects In the world of software an object is an instance of class. A class = a collection of things that exhibit the same characteristics or behaviour An object carries information and can do something An enter key on the computer is a type of object it contains data concerning font, style and current paragraph justification. No matter how many times I reformat my document the information knows how is to behave to achieve my desired layout. In architecture relationships can be represented as objects. E.g. All duct work through stairways must be fire stopped. With relationship defined these components can then be equipped to check their surroundings and do something about it. Ductwork finding itself passing through a fire barrier can then introduce fire stopping automatically.
BIM Director Overall responsibility strategy and implementation throughout BIM lifecycle In conventional design and construct appointed for duration of project For large scale portfolio e.g. hospitals or university the role could transfer to people as skill requirements shift stage by stage BIM director sits well with the traditional project sponsor role
BIM Manager Overall day to day responsibility for operating the BIM Interfacing with the project team Information flows and quality Short and long term security of information Training, software and information structuring conventions Support Human Resources The BIM manager fits well with a typical project manager s role
BIM Focus or Discipline Group Manager The front runner in terms of BIM at a particular project stage Generating BIM related output from their discipline group Leads temporarily until focus shifts to another group e.g. Planning or HVAC co-ordination of energy might be key foci at different stages these are best handled by relevant specialists Within the context of traditional PM these are the task managers
