1 9 th grade Visit the Parthenon Spend at least 90 minutes touring the Parthenon in Nashville s Centennial Park. Using a brochure as a guide, visit every major section, writing a brief summary of each and taking a picture in each location (except the art gallery). Interview at least one docent (volunteer) about something in more depth, and take notes over the information, including who you interviewed. Synthesize all of your notes into a word feature newspaper article that includes a creative title and at least three full-color pictures with captions. (Alternately, you could sign up for a docent training class, log 4-8 volunteer hours, and write a word reflection over your experiences.) Dangerous Predators (visit the zoo) Students will visit the zoo and then prepare a scrapbook of the most dangerous animals in the zoo. Pictures from the zoo and a short, but grammatically correct, written explanation should be provided for each choice. Additionally, students will read Mark Twain s short essay The Lowest Animal (it can easily be found in its entirety on the internet) and write a one page response to this piece. Do something dramatic this summer and watch a Shakespearean performance. 2 10 th grade Write an original short story Students will write an original short story of pages (12 point, Times New Roman font) in length. Remember to follow basic plot structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution / denouement. Students are encouraged to use a variety of literary devices and pay attention to character development Do something dramatic this summer and watch a Shakespearean performance. Write a word paper in which you provide a summary of the play and an evaluation (including commentary) of the reading circle. Create a Quilt showing heritage of the family Quilts serve many purposes. They are functional in that they keep us warm, they are artistic pieces made from cloth, and they are family heirlooms that connect generations. Design a quilt of your own that showcases your family s heritage. You don t have to actually create a cloth quilt (though you are more than welcome to do so if you wish!). A colorful quilt designed on poster board would also be accepted. Write a description of the elements you included in your quilt and why. A little research on quilting, blocking and patterns might be necessary for this project.
3 11 th grade Visit the Tennessee State Museum Take a step back in time and experience the Native American exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum. Take notes on what you learn regarding Native American customs, beliefs and ways of life. Read The World on the Turtle s Back once you return to school. Write a paper in which you connect major themes in the story with things you experienced during your viewing of the Native American exhibit at the Museum. Visit The Carnton Plantation During the mid 1800s, Carnton Plantation went from beautiful to bloody in just a few hours. First a field hospital, then a mass resting place for the dead, Carnton Plantation s setting is both serene and spooky. Explore Carnton Plantation and document your experience through personal photography. You will research Carnton Plantation and use your own photos to create an electronic presentation connecting setting s impact upon mood and tone. Visit The Carter House What makes a great legacy? Imagine being awakened at sunrise to see your home turned into a Civil War Headquarters. This is exactly what happened to the Carters, and because of their connection to the Battle of Franklin -- their legacy still lives on. Take a tour of the Carter House, do some research and chronicle your experiences in the form of personal memoir. Consider author s perspective and write from the perspective of a teen growing up during the Battle of Franklin.
4 12 th grade Visit the Tennessee Renaissance Festival Step back into the past and visit 16 th century England at the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. While there, pay special attention to the music, foods, and entertainment activities present. Then, conduct some research of your own on the Renaissance and evaluate the festival s overall accuracy. Pay attention to what elements were truly from the Renaissance and which elements of the Festival were untimely or out of place. Write about your findings in a word comparison / contrast paper (including sources for your research). Do something dramatic this summer and watch a Shakespearean performance. Living Legacy Project Become a Scop During Anglo Saxon times, scops were responsible for telling stories of epic heroes. In the days before Christianity, scops and their stories were the only way to attain immortality. Bring the memories of loved ones to life as you interview family members and friends of at least three people buried in local Fairview cemeteries. Craft your research into an entertaining presentation that details major events of each person s life. Presentations can take the form of written articles ( words), presentation boards, PowerPoint or media presentations. Including photographs, rubbings of cemetery markers, video clips and audio to enrich the presentation is encouraged, and documentation of sources is required.
5 Optional for any grade level Classical Allusion project Our culture is filled with references to Greek mythology. Companies use our associations with certain gods and goddess to help sell their products. Throughout the summer, look for references to classical mythology in popular culture. Cut out pictures in magazines, printout ads from online, or take pictures of billboards or other references you see in the world (at least twenty). Construct a scrap book of all the images and ads you can find. Under each picture or ad, write the connection between the product being advertised and its reference to Greek mythology. You will then answer a set of questions for each of the products and advertisements you found. Read a Book / Watch the Movie Write a word comparison/contrast essay over a full-length novel that has been made into a movie in the past decade. Describe aspects of the characters, conflicts, and themes that are similar in both forms, and describe those that are different. Pay particular note to setting variances, plot deviations, and role casting that you found surprising. Recent movies developed from books include, but are not limited to: The Lightning Thief, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Divergent, The Hunger Games, Winter s Tale, The Fault in Our Stars, The Giver, Unbroken, Ender s Game, The Book Thief, The Hobbit. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and use inspiration to write a song As middle Tennesseans, what a joy to live near Music City U.S.A.! Not only are we the Country Music capital, but Nashville is home to one of the most thriving music industries in the world. Songwriting, recording, and performing are the lifeblood of our culture. This summer, fully immerse yourself in this experience. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, and attend one of the two following programs: Words and Music or Songwriting Sessions (offered almost every Saturday in summer.) Your assignment is to compose your own song in participation with or response to the program you choose. Additionally, you will write a reflection journal that gives insight into your writing process and experience. You will submit your song and journal during the second week of school. Create a Flowcabulary Begin by visiting the following website: You will see examples of videos and hip-hop songs that summarize famous stories. After watching an example, read a story of your choice (a short story is fine) and create your own flocab video and song. Bring your finished product on a flash drive.
