1 ESL News for the week of September 26 th, 2011 Story One Fall is here! This weekend was the start of Autumn or Fall. The Equinox, or the beginning of Fall, is usually in the middle of September-around September 22 nd. The season of Fall is when many leaves on trees turn beautiful colours of red, orange, yellow and brown. It is when the days become shorter and the nights become colder. Apples and other fruits and vegetables can be harvested at this time. It is apple and pumpkin pie season! Also, we change the clocks in fall to have more sunlight in the day. On November 6 we will put the clocks back an hour and fall back. We love fall for the colourful leaves and delicious apples, but many people think the best thing about fall is that hockey is back and we can watch the Canucks! Story Two- Baby Beluga dies of heart problems Last week, the baby beluga Tiqa died at the Aquarium in Vancouver. Belugas are a kind of white whale that live in the Hudson Bay and the North. The whales are white, like icebergs, when they are adults. The belugas are grey when they are young. Tiqa was still grey. She had pneumonia before she died but the staff at the Aquarium think it was heart problems that killed Tiqa. She became sick on Wednesday, but died two days later.

2 Story Three- Adventurous missing couple found Three weeks ago, and elderly couple, Thomas Williams (71) and his wife Marie (68), left the northern BC town of Prince George to drive to their home town of Savona.(near Kamloops) They were driving in a white ford motor home. When they did not arrive home, family members got worried and phoned the RCMP. They told the police that the couple liked to explore country roads and were not good at keeping in touch. The police reported the couple missing and announced it on the radio. One man in the town of 100 Mile House heard the report on the radio. Later, he saw the elderly couple and their motor home. He told them they were missing people and to go to the police. Both the elderly man and woman are safe and in good health. They said they were just driving slowly and enjoying the beautiful environment. Story Four- American hikers back from Iran Prison Two American hikers finally came home from Iran. Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer went on a hiking trip in 2009 at the border between Iraq and Iran. The Iranian government believed they were spies and took them to prison. They stayed there for two years. They say they may have accidently crossed into Iran during the hike. In the two years they were in prison, they only spoke to their families for 15 minutes on the phone. Most of the time they were in isolation or in a prison room alone. When they arrived home, they were thin and pale but in good health. They are very thankful to be home.

3 Story Five- Saudi Women Can Vote! Women in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to vote in future elections. King Abdulla announced last Sunday that they will also be allowed to run in municipal elections. The Saudi government is focusing on social and political changes. Wajeha al-huwaider, a Saudi writer and women s activist, said This is great news! Womens voices will finally be heard. She also hopes this will change other rules. She hopes that women will be able to drive cars and be able to travel around without male guardians. Women are not able to get driving licences in Saudi Arabia and they must have a male with them to travel. Sports- This weekend, the Vancouver sports teams were busy. The Vancouver Canucks played the San Jose Sharks and lost 4-3. The Vancouver Whitecaps played the Seattle Sounders and also lost 3-1. The Vancouver Lions did win however against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The final score was Go Lions! Weather- This week we can expect rain and more rain. Monday and Tuesday call for rain all day, but on Wednesday we can expect to see just cloudy skies and maybe a little sunshine. Thursday and Friday, however, call for more rain. Don t forget your umbrella this week!
