2 Welcome to Heinrich Heine University Heinrich Heine was born in 1797 in Düsseldorf, which at that time was part of Napoleon s empire. He grew up in a liberal Jewish family. He was one of the most significant German poets of the 19th century. Because of Heine's liberal political views many of his works were banned by the authorities of the conservative German states at this time. Heine spent 25 years in exile in Paris, where he died in 1856.

10 The MA European studies is a 12 month program: winter semester: summer semester: October to March April to September The non-lecture periods are part of the study program. You need them for writing team research reports... writing the MA thesis... participating in the excursion program... taking oral examinations... repeating examinations, if necessary

13 Study program Eight master courses (including presentation, essay, short written exam etc.), plus two oral examinations (one at the end of each lecture period) One German language course is required, more are optional Research: Weekly master forum, a team research project, including presentation at conference in January and research report, and a master thesis (deadline: August 31) Excursion program: grand tour to Brussels in spring, grand tour to Strasbourg in September, plus several one-day tours Graduation ceremony at the end of September

17 Some rules and regulations...

18 No graduation without full study credits (1) In addition to passing all examinations, graduation requires full credits for all courses and study tours of the MA program. (2) Credits will be given if you do not miss more than two classes of a course or more than one day of the total excursion program, for whatever reason. If the student's absence is longer, depending on the situation, the lecturer can, but is not required to, allow for compensation for the study time missed (for example by asking for extra papers). (3) Students are expected to come to classes punctually and not to leave classes ahead of time. They are expected to inform teachers (not the European Studies office, not the tutors) about their absence from classes.

19 Dormitories: take care or pay (1) As a principle, you are the one who is responsible for your renting contract with the Studentenwerk. (2) Any extra costs due to lost keys, repairs etc have to be paid by you. (3) The European Studies Office just administers payments from your scholarship to the Studentenwerk for the apartment rent. (4) In order to cover eventual costs for repair or renovation, the European Studies office will keep 400 Euro from your scholarship for February (extra pay for second flight ticket) as a deposit. Before your departure, if your apartment is in a good condition, this deposit will be paid to you.

20 Official correspondence only via Every students of the University of Düsseldorf gets a HHU account for official use. Username and password are included in the immatriculation documents. In order to remain fully informed about university matters and in order to communicate with teachers and university administration, students have to use their HHU account. Your mail password also provides access to Off-campus university services via VPN ILIAS course websites

21 One name one spelling For all university business, please strictly use only the spelling of your name as written in your immatriculation documents. In general, you should use only one spelling of your name for all correspondence, including municipality, bank, post office, insurance company, flight tickets etc. Please do not use even minor variations of your name since this will cause confusion about your identity.

22 Respect responsibilities The European Studies office handles the organization of the program but is not responsible for classes. Any information regarding the student's classes and assigned tasks has to be forwarded directly to the teacher(s) concerned. The tutors will help the students with organizational matters and will be available as contact persons. However, the tutors will not take over any personal obligations or everyday duties of the student. Students - not the tutors - have to write the class assignments and papers.

23 Respect office hours Students should respect the office hours of the teachers and staff. If you need to consult with a teacher or staff, respect his or her office hours or ask for an appointment via . Communication with teachers and staff will be handled on working days only. Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and late night hours are definitively not part of the working days.
