4 VOLVO PENTA OILS Choose the correct oil We offer a perfectly matched range of lubricants for Volvo Penta engines and other diesel and gas-powered engines. Oil quality that meets Volvo Penta design requirements. Packs which meet the needs of both end-users and dealers. Volvo Penta has produced a wide range of lubricants developed specifically for Volvo Penta Engines. The range covers both end-user requirements for topping-up between services and also dealer needs for larger packs. Lubricating oil Volvo Penta makes significant investments in the development of all its products, and lubricants are no exception. They are designed and tailored to meet our engines requirements to guarantee that components work together in perfect harmony. Selecting the best combination of lubricants for an engine guarantees top performance and enhanced efficiency while also reducing wear and fuel consumption, which means a more sustainable, productive engine. During the design stage great emphasis is placed on maximizing stability and optimizing service intervals so that operating hours can be exploited to the full in both the short and long terms. SECURED TOP PERFORMANCE Volvo Penta lubricants are tested in the toughest possible conditions, from equatorial heat to sub-arctic cold and even at different altitudes above sea level. They are tested for roundthe-clock use just like our engines. The oil is also suitable for winter preservation and keeps its vital functions during off season. 4

5 VOLVO PENTA OILS SUGGESTIONS AND ADVICE Change oil and filter on time For every hour you operate, the amount of impurities in the oil rises, thus increasing engine wear at the end of the oil s usable life. Seized piston rings are often caused by carelessness with oil changes. It is economical to change the oil filter at the same time as you change oil. A new oil s characteristics deteriorate quickly when an old oil filter is used. When the oil filters become clogged and the oil circulation is obstructed, there is risk for oil stop and engine failure. Maintain cleanliness during all filling of oil When filling oil, it is very important to maintain cleanliness in your work area, especially around the filler hole. Be very thorough because carelessness is one of the major sources of impurities that cause wear, erosion, corrosion and malfunctions. Check the oil level An oil level that is too low is a frequent cause of component failures. Therefore, check the oil level in the engine, transmission and hydraulic system at regular intervals. Direct contact with oil and grease In case of daily contact, the skin may dry out and crack. Therefore, avoid direct skin contact with oil and grease. Oil smoke and oil mist can irritate respiratory organs and damage the nervous system and lungs. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Volvo PENTA Oil Analysis This is an unbeatable tool that not only allows to plan main tenance but also reduces the risk of unplanned downtime and expensive repairs. Simply put, oil analysis is a basic driveline health check. The analysis provides early warnings which makes it possible to replace components before problems appear and damage occurs. Our oil laboratories are repositories of knowledge and expertise about Volvo Penta products and are able to interpret and analyse results, recommending suitable actions better than anyone else. Regular analyses make trends visible, and bring even better control to engine health management. Oil analysis is carried out in three stages: S The Sample The necessary samples are taken by the Volvo Penta dealer and sent to a Volvo Penta laboratory S The Analysis Our laboratories have ultra modern, advanced diagnostic equipment and experienced, qualified personnel. They analyse the samples and collate a great amount of data including water/coolant content, viscosity, fuel, contaminants, the amount of metallic particles and more S The Diagnosis The results of the rigorous analysis are soon made available to the Volvo Penta dealer. The diagnosis provides immediate recommendations for actions so that critical situations can be avoided. 8 VOLVO PENTA COOLANT VOLVO PENTA COOLANT Volvo Penta Coolants are tested over long periods under a range of working conditions to meet our exacting standards. The primary function of coolant is to divert heat away from the engine in the region of the combustion chamber. But a coolant also has additional functions. COOLING Coolant is pumped through the engine block, where it is heated by combustion in the cylinders. When the engine reaches operating temperature the thermostat directs coolant flow through the radiator where it is cooled to a lower temperature. The coolant is then recirculated through the engine to maintain a controlled operating temperature. Corrosion protection The coolant is treated with different chemicals to prevent corrosion in the engine and other parts of the installation. Because this corrosion protection deteriorates over time, cooling system components may be damaged and cause leaks. Coolant must therefore be changed regularly. 2 year change interval for the green coolant and 4 years for the yellow coolant. Freeze protection Coolant contains various forms of glycol, which freezes at a much lower temperature than water. The coolant provides the cooling system with freeze protection. Heating The engine thermostat keeps coolant at around 85 C. The heated coolant may in some cases be used to heat the cabin in the application the engine forms part of. NOTE! Different types of coolant are specified for different engines. Always use the correct Volvo Penta Coolant. Concentrated coolant should always be mixed with water which complies with Volvo ST D 1285,1. 8

They consist of a number of different materials, such as cast iron, steel, a variety of aluminium alloys, copper, rubber and various plastics. The hot circulating coolant is not permitted to corrode any of these materials. Volvo Penta has therefore developed its own coolants which offers corrosion protection to all the engine s metal parts. This coolant is also non-corrosive in its contact with other materials. Quality Ethylene glycol. Offers excellent protection against freezing and excellent protection against corrosion. Does not contain any nitrites, amine or phosphate. 2 year change interval. Change in out of step with coolant filter where such is used. Must not be mixed with Volvo Penta coolant VCS. (Yellow). See operators manual. 19 VOLVO PENTA MISC. ANTI-RUST AGENT Thin ML rust prevention oil spray. A solvent-free rust prevention oil in spray can for small workshop jobs or do-it-yourself. The product is intended to be used in sills, beams and other box sections. A soft, waxy film is left after treatment. The rust prevention oil can be sprayed with the accompanying hose, without using any special nozzles. 20 EXPLANATIONS ACE A European automotive manufacturers organisation. Specifies oils for passenger cars, light duty and heavy duty vehicles. ACEA E2, E3, E4, E5, E9 Meet requirements for heavy duty diesel engines. ACEA E9 Meets the most recent requirements. API American Petroleum Institute. Specifies oil quality. API CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF, CF-4 Specifies oil quality standard for Diesel Engine Oil. This standard indicates requirements regarding carbon deposits on pistons, bearing corrosion, camshaft wear, oil consumption as well as max. viscosity increase of the oil. API CF-4 Lubricants that only meet the API CF-4 specifications are NOT suitable for Volvo engines. By using such oil there is a risk of engine failure. API CI-4 Oil intended for use in high speed fourstroke diesel engines manufactured to meet 2004 truck emission demands from the USA. Oils that meet the API CI-4 standard are adapted for engines with EGR system. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of previous API categories such as CH-4 and CG-4 and can effectively lubricate engines alling for those API Service Categories. API CJ-4 This is the latest standard from American Petroleum Institute. For highspeed four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet USA 2010 model year on-highway and Tier 4 nonroad exhaust emission standards. Optimum protection is provided for control of catalyst poisoning, particulate filter blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, lowand high-temperature stability, soot handling properties, oxidative thickening, foaming, and viscosity loss due to shear. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories. API GL-5 Refers to oils for hypoid (bevel) gears under high load. EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/ gasoline and diesel engines. EP grease Grease containing additives to prevent metals surfaces from seizing under extreme pressure (EP) conditions. ISO VG Viscosity classification of industrial oils. A class designation does not entail a quality evaluation, it only i nforms about the viscosity at the reference temperature which is 40 C. VG stands for Viscosity Grade. ISO VG 46 Viscosity s nominal value = 46 cst at 40 C ISO VG 68 Viscosity s nominal value = 80 cst at 40 C Moly grease Grease containing Molybdenum Disulphide particles as a solid additive to improve wear performance in special applications. NLGI number A scale for comparing consistency (hardness) range of greases. Number are in order of increasing consistency with NLGI 0 being semifluid and NLGI 6 solid. SAE Society of Automotive Engineers. Classification of lubricants depending on their viscosity. There are two systems for SAE-numbers, one for engine oils and one for transmission oils. The lower the SAE-no. in respective SAE-system, the thinner the oil. VDS-3 Volvo Drain Specifications. Volvo s high requirements for protection against cylinder polishing, ring wear, camshaft/ tappet wear, high oil consumption, etc. VDS-3 gives lower piston deposits.
