1 Binary appearences Galerie Dukan, Paris June 2 - July 18, 2015 Opening: June 2, 2015 / 6-9 pm We are pleased to present, with Alain Mustapha, collector to whom we gave carte blanche, the first solo exhibition of Turkish artist Sibel Kocakaya (1986, Istanbul) at Dukan gallery in Paris. Untitled, x 87 cm, oil on canvas All works staged by Sibel Kocakaya, paintings, photographs, videos and performances, explore the fields of our relationship to others and to the space around us. Through her works and by systematically using her own body as a medium, she invites us to deepen this relationship and allows us a better understanding of its different aspects. One of my favorite pieces is a photograph entitled «Woman with the flying broom»: nothing is more common than a woman holding a broom, somehow an almost universal symbol of the traditional condition of women. As if by magic, Sibel was able, in one glance, to turn this item into a powerful instrument of liberation. It is the way that she looks at things that so often delights me, diverting objects such as duvets, mattresses, shutters, vacuum cleaners or hangers from their everyday use to express universal values which go beyond her own culture and roots. In Sibel Kocakaya s works, photography is more telling than the representative sense of persuasiveness of the objects/objectiveness constructed to be photographed. As this fact is based on the persuasiveness of photography, it also performs a presentation aimed to draw the viewer into the trap of visual representation. Because of its medium, viewing photography turns into a double vision by dichotomizing from the reality of image towards the reality of imitation. The formations

2 in the constructions of Sibel Kocakaya are there without a solid ground they refer to the rear of the existing formations as well as beyond them. And this positions the viewer between the duality of the representation of the reality itself and the indicators of understanding (afterwards).
