The academic credentials of the Québec secondary educational system. Colléges d'enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP). Pre-university grade 12. Updates in secondary school curriculum. The NCAA Eligibility Center s method of evaluating prospective student-athletes from Québec. Crediting and weighting of courses. Resources.

Largest province of Canada. Capital Québec City. Largest city Montreal. Population - 7,750,504 (2008). Ministry of Education ultimate educational authority in Québec.

Education dating back to the 17th century (French speaking). After the Conquest, a complete English language school system established. Major secondary education reforms occurred during the 1960 s. Universal access to secondary education. Establishment of Colléges d'enseignement général et professionel (CEGEPs). Establishment of a new university (Université du Québec system). Establishment of the Ministry of Education.

Documents that meet high school graduation requirements (NCAA standards): Diplôme d Études Secondaires/DES (secondary school diploma). Diplôme d Études Professionnelles/DEP (diploma of vocational studies). Attestation de Spécialisation Professionnelle/ASP (attestation of vocational specialization). Attestation de Formation Professionnelle/AFP (attestation of vocational education). Attestation d Études Collegiales/AEC (attestation of collegial studies) from a College d Enseignement Général et Professionnel/ CEGEP. Diplôme d Études Collegiales/DEC (diploma of collegial studies) from a College d Enseignement Général et Professionnel/CEGEP. Pre-university grade 12 certificate.

Publicly funded French and English schools. Divided into two cycles: Cycle One Secondary I - II (grades seven through eight). Cycle Two Secondary III - V (grades nine through 11). The Eligibility Center considers Secondary III - V as high school.

After grade 11 the student graduates with their Diplome d Etudes Secondaires (DES). The Ministry of Education produces a Releve de notes, which lists proof of graduation and Secondary 4-5 course grades. Will also need to request official Secondary 3 report card as these courses are not listed on the final transcript from the Ministry of Education.

Students can specialize in pre-university or technical career areas. Two year pre-university programs. Three year technical career programs. French and English speaking schools. Over 150,000 students enrolled in CEGEP. Offer International Baccalaureate CEGEP program.

Offers a beginning bridging semester for students who have not decided on their subject of study. After completion, students graduate with their Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC). Some CEGEPs now offer double DEC s with concentrations in two different areas. Vanier College s Music and Science three-year DEC program.

One-year, university-preparatory bridge to universities in and outside the province of Quebec. Alternative to the CEGEP system, offered at several schools in Quebec. Lower Canada College, Standstead College, Bishop s College and Sedbergh School.

Boarders and day students. Most curriculums offer Honors, Advanced Placement and Ontario Grade 12 courses. Small class sizes versus CEGEP schooling. Graduates can attend Québec university, but many leave the province to attend United States or other international schools.

Major reforms by the Ministry of Education in several academic areas. First secondary school graduates to have completed the reformed secondary education curriculum will be arriving in the CEGEPS/Pre- University Grade 12 in fall 2010.

The Ministry of Education encourages knowledge that is constructed for solving problems versus memorization or mastery of a certain behavior. The reform program is based on three elements: broad areas of learning; cross-curricular competencies; and subject areas. The subject areas include languages, sciences, mathematics, social sciences and arts education.

Two paths lead directly to a college education. General education path and the applied education path. The difference between the two is distinguished by the sciences and the options offered. As of May 1, 2010, students must pass the following subjects in order to graduate: Language of Instruction (V), Second language (V), Mathematics (IV), Science and Technology or Applied Science and Technology (IV), History and Citizenship Education (IV), Arts Education (IV), and Ethics and Religious Culture or Physical Education (V).

Science and Technology Program. Problems are scientific. Secondary III emphasizes the living world. Secondary IV emphasizes the earth, space and the material world. Applied Science and Technology Program. Problems are technological. Concepts prescribed for the two years are chosen based on application of the technological world. Secondary III does not cover earth and space.

Programs have 60 percent of the same content. Three competencies in science: Seeks answers or solutions to scientific/technology problems. Makes most of the their knowledge of science/technology. Communicates in the languages used in science/technology. New courses contain set of concepts from science courses in old program, as well as concepts from the old Introduction to Technology program.

All students take same math course for Secondary III. Math is then divided into three paths in Secondary VI and V. Cultural, l Social and Technical. Technical and Scientific. Science. Students can only change paths in special circumstances.

Cultural, Social and Technical Option. Intended for students who like to design objects and activities, develop projects or participate in carrying these projects out. A greater use of statistics and discrete mathematics. Comprises of 100 hours of classes per year. Prepares students for studies in arts, communications, social sciences and humanities.

Technical and Scientific Option. Intended for students who want to explore situations that sometimes involve both intellectual and manual work. Requires students to identify mathematical concepts and processes. Comprises of 150 hours per year. Prepares students for study in fields related to biology, physics, fine arts, graphic arts and business administration.

Science Option. Intended for students who want to understand origins of phenomena and how they work. Learn to develop formal proofs, complex algebraic operations and analyzing models. Requires a greater capacity for abstract thinking. Comprises of 150 hours per year. Prepares students for study in the hard sciences or to specialize in research fields.

Three main mathematical competencies: Solves a situational problem. Uses mathematical reasoning. Communicates using mathematical language.

Social science subject areas include: Geography, History and Citizenship Education, Contemporary Economic Environment, Ethics and Religious Culture and an Integrative Project. Old economics program has been eliminated i (Economics Education Sec V). Concepts of economics are now dispersed over Contemporary Economic Environment, Mathematics (Cycle Two), History and Geography.

Comprises of four programs: Drama, Visual Arts, Dance and Music. Must pass the Secondary IV Arts Education component in order to graduate. Three competencies specific to each subject include creativity, interpretation and appreciation.

Ministry of Education awards various credits to secondary education courses, as well as, CEGEP courses. More credits for an individual course = more hours of course time. Every course in Pre-University Grade 12 is worth the same value, because students only complete six or seven courses per year.

Crediting: Unit credits for Secondary III - V/Grades nine - 11 will be awarded as follows: DES Units of Credit U.S. Equivalent 6Units 1Unit 4 Units 0.75 Units 3 Units 0.50 Units 2 Units 0.34 Units 1 Unit 0.25 Units Core courses that are awarded Equ will be awarded the lowest passing grade of 60 percent.

Crediting: Unit credits for DEC/CEGEP will be awarded as follows: DEC/CEGEP Units of Credit U.S. Equivalent 1 CEGEP Unit 0.34 Units CEGEP Units 0.50 Units 2 CEGEP Units 0.75 Units 2.25 CEGEP Units or higher 1 Unit Pre-University Grade 12 Units of Credit.
