2 Little Growth Shown in Top100 Fleets Very little growth was reported in METRO s annual Top 100 Transit Bus Fleets for With a total of 60,355 buses, the 100 agencies are operating nearly the same number of vehicles this year, with 75 more buses overall than in MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) was among the transit properties that grew its fleet, adding 174 buses for a 4% increase over Not surprisingly, NYCT still holds the No. 1 spot with a fleet total of 4,667 buses. New Jersey Transit, with 3,053 vehicles, and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, with 2,721, remain in the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Transit agencies plan to purchase an estimated 4,839 buses in This number comprises 8% of the fleet totals listed. A majority of the buses will be used as replacements. The Chicago Transit Authority (No. 4) expects to buy 400 buses in the coming year the longest shopping list in the Top 100. Longer buses still most popular Once again, buses longer than 35 feet hold the lead in the fleet composition, with 46,437 buses. This comprises 77% of the fleet mix total. NYCT makes up 8% of this figure with more than 4,000 buses in this category. Buses 35 feet or shorter comprise 15%, with 9,231 vehicles. A new question to this year s survey asked the average age of buses in fleets. Among the 72 respondents, buses averaged 7.1 years. The Memphis (Tenn.) Area Transit Authority (No. 71) listed the lowest average bus age at 3.3 years. The Hamilton Street Railway (No. 81) in Hamilton, Ontario, and the Toronto New York continues its reign at the top of METRO s Transit Bus Fleet survey, increasing its fleet by 4% for a total of 4,667 buses. By Janna Starcic, Senior Editor Transit Commission (No. 5) listed the highest averages at 17 and 14 years, respectively. Eighty-three percent of fleets operate low-floor vehicles. While ADA-compliant vehicles make up 28% of the total vehicles listed, alternative-fueled vehicles comprise 13.6% (8,190 buses). Compressed natural gas vehicles represent 6,195, or 76%, of these. Liquified natural gas vehicles make up 9% of the alternativefuel vehicles listed, with a total of 777. Hybrid-electric propulsion comes in a distant third, with 201 reported vehicles. Joining our list for the first time are the Fairfax County (Va.) Department of Transportation (No. 93), with 170 buses, and the San Joaquin (Stockton, Calif.)
