4 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 10 years of expertise in nonlinear finite element modeling of large structures involving contact mechanics, plasticity, solid heat transfer and thermomechanical interaction. Behavior and robust design of steel shear connections under extreme hazards such as fire conditions: Experimental investigation by designing and conducting large scale furnace tests in Fire Laboratory of Michigan State University, numerical analysis and modeling by using commercial finite element software such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-DYNA. Structural fire safety: Investigation and structural analysis of the World Trade Center 7 building collapse. Research collaboration with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in developing a research agenda and building design codes for performancebased (numerical and experimental) investigation of structures against extreme conditions such as fire and earthquake. Sustainable and holistic approach to design buildings and infrastructure such as highways and bridges in order to maximize their life-cycle, efficiency and resilience to extreme natural and man-made hazards and minimize their negative impact to the environment. ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE Research and Teaching Assistant at Princeton University ( ): 10 years of expertise in nonlinear finite element modeling of large structures in ABAQUS and ANSYS involving contact mechanics and thermo-mechanical analysis. Substantial knowledge on bridge design and analysis packages in STAAD and SAP. Taught courses in fundamental structural mechanics, design of large-scale structures (bridges and tall buildings) and engineering history: Mechanics of Solids, Finite Element Method, Design of Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures, Statics of Structures, Engineering in the Modern World. Lab and Teaching Assistant at Duke University ( ): Conducted and designed labs such as mixing, casting and testing concrete and tensile strength testing of aluminum and steel. Developed substantial leadership and team work experience in ASCE Concrete Canoe Chair at Duke University Chapter (2005). Structural Engineering Intern (June August 2004): Engineering Intern in Civil Engineering Design Firm TEKFEN, worked on Istanbul Canyon Project (designed by ARUP Engineers), the biggest shopping mall, residence, and office complex in Europe. 4
