Introduction Altiris Topology Viewer is a graphical network topology tool used to document SNMP-enabled network devices, and provide network administrators a resource for viewing SNMP data by individual device. Topology Viewer is a stand-alone Win32 client application that ships with Altiris Deployment Solution for Network Devices and Altiris Inventory Solution for Network Devices. This product has no dependencies to Notification Server or Microsoft SQL Server. However, you must install Altiris Network Discovery and either Altiris Deployment Solution for Network Devices or Altiris Inventory Solution for Network Devices. Combined together, these products work to help you manage the complex task of maintaining, documenting, and troubleshooting any device on the network. After Network Discovery runs one of its Scan Group policies, a data file of discovered devices is created in Notification Server s shared directory. Topology Viewer uses this information for viewing devices and creating maps to document or troubleshoot the network. The Network Browser is a treeview of the imported data file that details SNMP-enabled network devices by categories such as routers, switches, hubs, end nodes, and more. Navigating through the treeview is simple. Click on any given device, and you can view more details about where it is located on the network and its connectivity information. See Network Browser on page 7 for more information. Topology has the ability to create groups and maps to document existing subnets, which can also help you plan infrastructure expansions. The click and drag feature allows you to move the devices around the map view area, so that viewing the device name is easier. Maps can then be exported to Microsoft Visio version 2002 or 2003, which automatically labels each device name along with the interface index information. See Topology on page 7 for more information. Layer 2 Trace allows you to select a start and end IP lookup and then traces all connections between the start and end points. This feature can help build maps and can also assist in troubleshooting segments on the network. See Layer 2 Trace on page 9 for more information. The IP/MAC Tracker is a feature that helps isolate rogue IP or MAC addresses that are connected to the network. You can enter lookup values and search the database or network for any device associations. The results show you the device name, the interface index, port information, and the device connections. See IP/MAC Tracker on page 10 for more information. Topology Viewer also lists all SNMP-enabled devices and host port information. You can scroll through these lists or use the filter to select the type of device you want to view. See SNMP Device List on page 11 and Host Port List on page 11 for more information. The ability to easily view data for network devices, create maps to document the network, making this a time saving product that provides value and improves performance for any IT management organization. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 4

Topology Viewer is a stand-alone Win32 program that ships with Deployment Solution for Network Devices and Inventory Solution for Network Devices. However, to use Topology Viewer you must have discovered SNMP-enabled devices on the network using Altiris Network Discovery (See the Network Discovery Product Guide for information), and installed Deployment Solution for Network Devices or Inventory Solution for Network Devices. This tool provides users the ability to visually layout and document network subnets using data files created after Network Discovery collects data from SNMP-enabled device on the network. Altiris Topology Viewer Topology Viewer uses a data file that is created after Altiris Network Discovery runs one of the Scan Group policies to discovery SNMP-enabled devices on the network. The data files contain all the SNMP information collected when the Scan Group policy runs. The files are stored in the Notification Server share directory (see File on page 6 for the directory path). There is a one to one relationship between Scan Group policies and the output data files. For example, if you have a Scan Group policy called All Routers, when it runs, the SNMP information for all routers will be written to a file called All Routers.top. Topology Viewer will open any.top or.txt data file, which will provide detailed information about the devices and create a view of the physical layout of the network subnet. Note: If you do not find a data file with either the.txt or.top file extension, or the file date is not current, run one of the Scan Group policies from Network Discovery. To open Topology Viewer Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Topology Viewer\ATopoView.exe. Toolbar Description The buttons on the toolbar are functional when you open Topology Viewer, but you must open a data file before you can browse through device information, view network layouts, or look up IP and MAC addresses. Toolbar Description Buttons Description Network Browser: This is a treeview of network devices according to their category. Topology: This lets you create groups (folders) and maps to document subnets on the network. SNMP Device List: This is a list of all SNMP-enabled devices. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 5

Toolbar Description Buttons File New: This will create a new document, which discards any information currently in the Network Browser. Use the Save or Save As commands to save the current configuration and topology layouts before selecting this command. Open or Save: By default, files can be retrieved from or saved to the directory, C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notifictation Server\NSCap\Discovery. Tools Description Host Port List: This is a list of host ports for all SNMPenabled devices. Zoom In: This lets you zoom in to view a topology area in greater detail. Device names and IP addresses are easier to read. Zoom Out: This lets you zoom out so that the topology map shows more devices in the view area. About: The Topology Viewer version number. The host name, IP address, and MAC address of the computer running Topology Viewer. You can also define a path to the Notification Server. Reproccess Connectivity: This option allows you to regenerate a connectivity model. For example, you can discover individual devices one at a time by selecting the Add Device discovery method from the Network Browse page. Layer 2 Trace: This allow you to find the network route using start and end IP addresses and then check the status at each interval of the route. IP/MAC Tracker: This allows you to enter IP or MAC address values to search the database or network for device information. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 6

Network Browser After you open a.top or.txt data file, click on the Browse button. The Network Browser shows a treeview list of network devices by type, with details about each individual device. Each tab shows SNMP information collected from network devices, if it was available when one of the Scan Group policies in Network Discovery ran. Topology Topology lets you design or document any network devices based on the data file you opened with Topology Viewer. You can create groups (folders) and maps to display subnets or specific SNMP devices. Initially, when you click the Topology button both the left and right panes do not display any data. However, you can quickly and easily create as many groups and maps as you want. The Treeview The left pane is a hiearchical treeview where you can organize and document network subnets into groups, and then add maps to those groups. Right-click on Network, click Add Group, and then enter a name for the group. Right-click on the new Group you just created and then click Add Map. After you enter a map name, you can begin to Add Devices to a Map. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 7

Add Devices to a Map Right-click anywhere in the right pane to display map options and then select Add Device(s) to Map. A list of all SNMP-enabled devices is displayed. Click the Filter drop-down arrow and select the category type of devices you want listed. When the list displays, select as many devices from the list as you want for your map. However, if you are selecting random IP addresses or host name devices but they have no connectivity association, they will not add to the map. Instead, you can add a known device to the map, then right-click on the device and select Add Connected. Network devices that are connected to the single device you added will automatically appear on the map. You can click and drag the devices added to the map to form any design you want. Auto Layout When you select this option, any devices you have moved around on the map will be rearranged to line up in either a linear or radial view. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 8

Export to Visio Topology Viewer lets you export maps to Microsoft Visio versions 2002 or Right-click anywhere in the right pane to display the Export to Visio option. Notice that there are two options: Visio and Visio with Details. Visio will draw devices with only the host name, while Visio with Details will draw devices with the host name and the interface connectivity information. For example, the diagram below shows Router 3 using an ethernet connection on Bridgeport 1/5 to connect to Router 1 on bridgeport 1/97. Documenting routers and switches with interface detail will save time and reduce cost when supporting and documenting any sized network. Layer 2 Trace This feature lets you look up a start and end IP address to determine the route of network traffic between the two end points. Each Lookup button opens a list of network devices, select both the Start and End IP addresses. Click the Layer 2 Trace button. The network route from start to end will display in the right pane. In the example below, the Layer 2 Trace yielded 4 results, showing the device host name, IP address, and interface or MAC address. Notice the blue dot at the beginning of each line item. After you determine a particular network route, you can determine if each device had connectivity by clicking the Show L2 Status button. The blue dots will change to green if the status is OK and to red if the ping test failed. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 9

In the example below, notice that all routes but the last device listed show the status as OK. This feature is a quick way to test the network traffic from one point to another. IP/MAC Tracker IP/MAC Tracker lets you locate a network device based on the IP or MAC address by searching the repository of the data file or the Network to see if there is any known associations. This technology can be used to isolate problematic IP or MAC addresses in the event an unidentified device attaches to the network. Below IP Sightings, enter an IP address. Click either the Search Database for IP/MAC or Scan Network for IP/MAC buttons. Searching the database will determine if the IP address was known at the time discovery ran, and searching the network will search for the IP address on the network. If a match is found, the IP address will display the MAC address it is associated with, the device name, and interface information. MAC Sightings lets you enter a known MAC address to determine the device name or IP address where it is located on the network and the port information. In the example below, IP address was entered in the IP Address field to perform a search on the network. The IP address was located with its last known MAC address, the device name, interface index and description, and the port where the device is connected. This feature saves network administrators time when identifying devices and troubleshooting rouge network traffic. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 10

SNMP Device List This displays a list of all SNMP-enabled network devices that were identified at the time one of the Scan Group or Inventory policies ran. If you are certain specific items should be included in the list, re-run the corresponding policies and open the updated data file with Topology Viewer. Host Port List This displays a list of host ports for all SNMP-enabled network devices that were identified at the time one of the Scan Group or Inventory policies ran. You can update the information by re-running the corresponding policies and opening the updated data file with Topology Viewer. Altiris Topology Viewer Product Guide 11
