Central soles walk halls of justice Students experience shock and awe and disbelief during a unique internship program at Central High School Magnet Career Academy (MCA). Eight Central seniors conclude their internship this week with a valuable perspective into the judicial system forged after attending mental inquest hearings, touring the jail, and listening to testimony in the trial of convicted killer Cecil New II. The Central High School Internship with Jefferson Circuit Clerk David L. Nicholson is in its third year and caters to elite and passionate students in Central s Legal/Government Services (Law) Magnet Program. Two Central High senior interns help court employees assemble packets of information to be distributed to visitors. Twelve students applied for the eight positions in the program, which lasts about eight weeks. Three days each week, students make the short walk from Central to spend their sixth period at the Louis D. Brandeis Hall of Justice. Each day, students rotate to different courtrooms, where they often sit at the bench alongside the court employees and judge. Students view proceedings and courtroom protocol, from traffic court to circuit court. Students also tour the jail and U. S. District Court as part of the program. When students return to Central after a session, they often approach their teacher, Joe Gutmann, with a wide-eyed story of their most recent experience.

A lot of times, it s disbelief, Gutmann says. You won t believe what I saw. Highlights of this year s internship included students being able to attend the criminal death penalty case of New and listening to oral arguments from attorneys in the Fri., Nov. 5, proceedings with Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge Denise Clayton. For three years, the most sobering experience for students has been the tour of the jail, where they see inmates ranging from teens to senior citizens, all of them miserable, Gutmann says. The program is the only high school internship in court in Jefferson County. It was developed three years ago when Gutmann, a prosecutor for 20 years, approached David Nicholson with an idea of an internship program for Central s magnet students. In addition to being former colleagues in the justice system, Gutmann and Nicholson knew each other in high school. Both graduated from Ballard High in the mid-1970s. He opened up his arms and said We d love to, Gutmann says. The program was created from scratch and continues to improve each year. Students in Central s Legal/Government Services (Law) Magnet Program receive instructions from a circuit court employee before they head to courtrooms in the Hall of Justice. At right is their teacher Joe Gutmann. We designed the internship program in such a way as to create a meaningful experience for those students who see their future in a court-related career, Nicholson says. When they leave us, they leave with some sense of what it s going to be like working in the justice system. Students are introduced to attorneys, judges, law enforcement authorities, and court clerical workers. Many of the students use the connections for letters of reference, and they appreciate making connections in a field that all of them feel certain they will pursue. There is a nationwide initiative to recruit more attorneys who reflect the diversity of the United States. The program supports that national goal, Gutmann says. The students will return to Room 2002 in the Hall of Justice at 1 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 22, to participate in a reception and share final thoughts with attorneys and court employees. Nobody leaves the program who isn t fascinated, says Sharon Hall, chief deputy of Community Government Affairs at the Circuit Clerk s Office. The students compete for the positions, and many have already decided without equivocation what they will double-major and minor in during college and what aspect of law they hope to focus on after law school. At least two expressed an interest in international law. The unique program complements a thriving magnet program at Central. Gutmann enjoys classroom debates and discussions regarding news and trials ripped from the headlines. Before Jefferson Circuit Judge Judith McDonald-Burkman issues her ruling in the final sentencing of New on Fri., Dec. 17, Gutmann s students will write papers that argue their thoughts on what New s sentence should be. The eight students in the program also will write papers that detail their experiences as interns.

Run Run Rudolph 5K Race Registration is now underway for the Run Run Rudolph 5K Run/Walk, which will be held at 3 p.m. on Fri., Nov the day after Thanksgiving. The run/walk is part of the Light Up Louisville activities and winds through downtown Louisville. Early registration costs $20 for an adult and $10 for a child younger than 12. Proceeds for the race will benefit the Baptist Hospital Foundation. To register online, visit For more information, call or click here. Teressa Nalley, a data management research technician with Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRYSCs), is a JCPS Star Performer. A colleague nominated Nalley for the customer service honor after working with her in the spring. This is her third Star Performer Award. The nomination contained the following. I have never worked with anyone like Teressa. The woman is amazing. She is responsible for all of the secretarial duties for the FRYSC Office, which monitors and assists more than 90 Family Resource and Youth Service Centers. Many days, every line on her phone is ringing while she is working on a detailed project and you would never know that you are not the only person she has talked to all day. She is never rattled or short. In addition, she always goes the extra mile to help. She spends many hours at her job doing things that make the work of the center coordinators more efficient and effective. Teressa is very humble, and sometimes I think she really does not even realize all she does. She has a true servant s heart, and the work that she does is consistently quick and professional. I cannot think of a better person to receive a Star Performer Award. Teressa Nalley, a data management research technician with Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRYSCs), is a JCPS Star Performer for the third time. Have you enjoyed exceptional service from a JCPS employee? Nominate him or her for a Star Performer Award. Kudos to Jan Hartman, a fourth-grade teacher at Norton Elementary. Freeman was recently selected to serve on the Graduate Reading Licensure Program Advisory Board at Indiana University Southeast (IUS). Freeman will provide feedback and review data regarding program changes. Kudos to Jennifer Freeman, English teacher and coordinator of Southern High s Multicultural Teacher Recruitment Program/Future Educators Association (MTRP/FEA) Program. Freeman s students coordinated a book drive and a special Literacy Night and Chili Supper, which was held at Blake Elementary from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 16. Students collected more than 800 books for Blake Elementary students, and Southern students recruited guests to read and play word games with students. Louisville Metro Councilwoman Madonna Flood and Okolona Police Commander Mark Fox attended the event and spoke about the importance of education and reading.

Kudos to Leslie Spivak, fifth-grade teacher at McFerran Preparatory Academy. Spivak was honored with the WHAS-TV Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership (ExCEL) Award during a ceremony at school on Wed., Nov. 17. Spivak holds a bachelor s degree in psychology and a master s degree in teaching from the University of Louisville (UofL). Chancey Elementary Principal Ronda Cosby, who served as a mentor during Spivak s participation in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP), says Spivak demonstrated master teacher potential through her innovative instructional practices. She infused rigor, relevance, and relationships in all of her lessons, and she recognized that she must differentiate her instruction to meet the needs of her diverse learning environment. Spivak began teaching at McFerran in She quickly became known among colleagues and students for her creative lessons. For example, she challenges her math students to decipher an alien code from a movie clip -- a code that helps her students learn prime numbers. She has served as a McFerran team leader and a Quick Recall and Problem Solving coach as well as a Dialogue Team spokesperson, an overnight field-trip coordinator, a participant in the JCPS Curriculum Review, and a member of the GE Grant Math Focus Group and the Technology Rich Classrooms Focus Group. She also has served on a range of school support Leslie Spivak, fifth-grade teacher at McFerran Preparatory Academy, accepts the WHAS-TV ExCEL Award on Wed., Nov. 17. committees, including the School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council, the Consolidated Planning Team, the Scheduling Committee, the Discipline Committee, and the Budget Committee. Spivak has served as a mentor teacher for students at UofL, Spalding University, and Bellarmine University. Teachers from other JCPS schools have visited her classroom to see how she maintains rigorous instruction and assessment but still makes learning exciting. As a winner of the ExCEL Award, Spivak received a $1,000 instructional grant from E.ON U.S. Kudos to Carla Kolodey, fifth-grade teacher at Roosevelt-Perry Elementary. Kolodey received a Kraft Foods grant that funded a field trip. Kolodey took her students to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati on Sat., Nov. 6. Kudos to several district teachers whose students received top awards in the Great American Smokeout Poster Contest. This year s theme was Smoking: I m Too Smart to Start. Student winners received prizes of gift cards, and all students who competed received award certificates. The winners were honored during a luncheon on Thurs., Nov. 18, the day of the thirty-fourth annual Great American Smokeout. The American Cancer Society, Baptist Hospital East, and Baptist Hospital Northeast coordinated the contest. The teachers of the winning students are as follows: Elementary School Division Second and Third -- Christa Hudson at Rangeland Elementary Honorable Mention -- Rick Ward at Roosevelt-Perry Elementary Honorable Mention -- Helen Barnes at Bowen Elementary Middle School Division First, Second, and Third and Honorable Mention -- Sue Hall at Jefferson County Traditional Middle School (JCTMS) High School Division First and Best of Show -- Cheryl Wilhoit at Pleasure Ridge Park High Third -- Patrick Robertson at Central High School MCA Honorable Mention -- Theresa Anderson at Eastern High Honorable Mention -- Terry Hazelip at Pleasure Ridge Park High Kudos to Sue Hall, art teacher at JCTMS. Artwork of an eighth-grade student of Hall s was selected to serve as one of the 2010 holiday cards for Kosair Charities.

Kudos to Theresa Mudd and Kim Herndon at Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) and to Tamara Begley and Susan Sharp at Western Middle. Mudd and Herndon accompanied the YPAS Dance Ensemble to Western Middle on Thurs., Nov. 4. The YPAS Dance Ensemble held a joint workout and performance/demonstration with the Western sixth-grade students in the Dance Class, which is part of the Western Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Program. The effort was a wonderful collaboration between the YPAS students and their middle school counterparts. Kudos to Kristine Larson, art and humanities teacher at Young Elementary. Larson has two students who won first and second place in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet s Adopt-A-Highway Make It Yours Poster Contest. The students won in the ages 9 to 11 division. Students will receive cash prizes, and the students, Larson, and Young Elementary Principal Mary Minyard will attend an awards luncheon at the Governor s Mansion in Frankfort on Fri., Dec. 17. The group from Young will also get to tour the Governor s Mansion, which will be decorated for the holidays. This is the second year that a student from Young has been awarded first place in the state contest. Kudos to the music directors who led their students to compete in JCPS All-County Music Festivals. Participation is competitive, and students must audition for a spot. The festivals and the schools are as follows: The JCPS All-County High School Chorus Music Festival was held on Tues., Nov. 16, at Sallie Phillips Durrett Auditorium. Congratulations to the chorus teachers and students from Atherton, Ballard, Brown, Butler Traditional, dupont Manual, Eastern, Fairdale, Fern Creek Traditional, Iroquois, Jeffersontown, Louisville Male, Pleasure Ridge Park, Seneca, Southern, Western, and YPAS. Kudos to the coordinators of the Conway Middle fall literary event held from Mon., Oct. 25, through Thurs., Oct. 28. The Conway Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sponsored the event, which brought Roberta Simpson Brown, a professional storyteller and an acclaimed entertainer. Brown told creepy stories to students and encouraged them to read. Brown is the author of several books, including The Walking Trees and Other Stories and Queen of the Cold-Blooded Tales. Brown also told stories from her most recent book, Four Seasons of Scary Stories. Kudos to the staff members at Farmer Elementary who hosted the UofL Repertory Company on Tues., Nov. 9. The group performed the fable A Helping Hoof for five P1 classes. This fable, set in Egypt, is about a selfish prince and his servant who are taught the virtues of kindness and generosity. Both are turned into animals (a camel and a monkey) until they meet a couple who show them kindness and help them on their journey to become kind and thoughtful individuals.
