3 MSc (Eng) Biological and Bioprocess Engineering. Bioscience based industries represent a new frontier for chemical engineering, this emerging multi-discipline can be utilised for diverse purposes; sources of energy, food and medicine. Biological and Bioprocess Engineering is based on the application of engineering principles to the molecular biosciences. You will be trained to operate effectively in the convergence of these two disciplines, contributing to the development of next generation biotechnologies. There is currently a lack of suitably qualified graduates for the bioprocessing and biopharmaceutical industries to prosper. We aim to address this skills shortage by working closely with industry to develop this MSc (Eng) in Biological and Bioprocess Engineering. This course is suitable for both bio-science and chemical engineering graduates alike, the first module you undertake will teach engineering principles to the bio-scientists and vice versa. Chemical and Biological Engineering occupies a modern building with four lecture theatres and numerous wellequipped laboratories for postgraduate work. In addition there are extensive computer facilities. We encourage a friendly and informal atmosphere in the Department. 4 Course Structure The MSc (Eng) in Biological and Bioprocess Engineering is offered on a full-time basis over one year, starting in September and requires completion of eight modules and a major research project dissertation. You will be allocated an academic supervisor who will provide advice and guidance throughout the period of study. Opportunities exist for dissertation studies to be carried out in collaboration with other university research centres or with industrial organisations. The course is modular, allowing students some flexibility in the design of their degree. Students must take the five core modules and choose three from a range of optional modules. The MSc(Eng) consists of: five compulsory modules optional modules (choose 3) a major research project Core Modules For Biosciences graduates: Principles of Biochemical Engineering Aimed at bioscience graduates this module will introduce core concepts of biochemical engineering including material and energy balances, heat and mass transfer; fluid dynamics and reaction engineering. For Engineering graduates: Principles of Biomolecular Sciences Engineering graduates will be taught fundamental principles of the biological sciences, including bio molecular structure and function, cell biology, metabolism and systems biology. Research methods in Biochemical Engineering Students will gain an appreciation of the philosophical objectives of research in biochemical engineering and an understanding of why research is conducted through theory building and hypothesis formation, how research is conducted, analysed and presented. Bio systems Engineering & Computational Biology This module aims to introduce core concepts of computational/ systems biology and its application in the engineering of biological systems, including the analysis and design of biological systems for human benefit. You will also cover aspects of the reconstruction of biochemical networks and their mathematical representation and analysis. Biopharmaceutical Bioprocessing Provide students with an awareness of bioproduct manufacturing technology, especially with respect to biopharmaceutical bioprocessing. You will also examine generic examples of cell engineering, metabolic engineering, upstream and downstream unit operations, bio pharmaceutical formulation, bioproduct analysis and systems engineering. Optional Modules Synthetic Biology Synthetic biology is a rapidly emerging field that seeks to employ engineering principles and modularity to the design and construction of organisms for useful purposes. These applications include biofuels and economically manufactured pharmaceutical products. It also introduces the ethical, social and the legal implications that straddle synthetic biology. Stem Cell Biology This module, delivered by the Department of Biomedical Sciences and will provide an in-depth account of stem cell biology and its application to regenerate medicine. Special reference will be made to the molecular and genetic control of cell fate specification and differentiation. While also considering existing and potential clinical uses of stem cells and their derivatives and the ethical issues they raise. Bionanomaterials Delivered by the Department of Biomedical Sciences, this module introduces cell and molecular biology and looks at examples of how biomolecules have been used to design nano-structures and how they are used in biological and medical applications. You will understand the principles of bionanotechnology, the application of natural materials in nanotechnology and nanomaterials in biology and medicine. Tissue engineering approaches to failure in living systems Delivered by the Department of Biomedical Science and Engineering, this module explores tissue and biomedical engineering approaches to address disease, failure and old age in the human system. A theme throughout the module is the common forms of pathology or injury to tissues and current therapeutic approaches, using this as a basis to explore the tissue and biomedical methods. Bio-energy This module provides an overview of current and future technologies for deriving energy from biological sources. Sourcing, producing and the properties of biofuels, such as bio-methane, Wbio-ethanol, bio-hydrogen and bio-diesel will be explored. Also looking at the safe storage and handling of biofuels and biomass combustion properties.
