1 MOBILE NEAR-FIELD COMMUNICATIONS (NFC) PAYMENTS MAY 2013 THESE TECHNOLOGIES ARE BECOMING CONVENIENT AND SIMPLE WAYS TO PAY. Every day merchants seek better ways to grow their business and improve efficiency. Similarly, customers are eager to try new tools that make life simpler, whether they re connecting with family and friends or making purchases. Contactless cards and Mobile Near-Field Communications (NFC) represent an exciting opportunity for Network Participants to streamline payments, refine the way merchants market and improve their customers experience. In many ways contactless cards are stepping stones that encourage early adopters to convert to mobile NFC. At American Express we re prepared to help Network Participants to transition to this promising evolution in payment technologies. 2 SEIZE THE ADVANTAGE. GROW YOUR BUSINESS. Working with American Express, Network Participants benefit from our expertise in the merchant-consumer relationship. Our support can help merchants understand how investments in Contactless and Mobile NFC can deepen loyalty among their current customers and provide a compelling opportunity to help attract new American Express Cardmembers. * Drawing on our strength in digital commerce solutions, you can be confident that your customers will enjoy a virtually seamless, secure purchasing experience. 1 OPTIMIZE YOUR PAYMENTS Use new technologies to increase efficiency at the point of sale. Smart mobile devices let merchants pinpoint opportunities near customers current locations, if customers choose to receive location-based options. Mobile devices offer highly efficient marketing channels to complement traditional, printbased efforts. Merchants can take advantage of American Express partnerships with leaders in the digital space, and craft compelling digital experiences to effectively engage Cardmembers. ENRICH THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE Show that merchants respect their customers time and desire for hassle-free purchasing by offering a speedy method of payment that is also more secure than other methods of payment. At the same time, merchants can learn more about customer s spending behaviors and provide them with relevant purchasing opportunities that customers will welcome and that will add value to their everyday lives. * Definition of American Express Cardmembers Respondents who reported that they have an American Express Consumer, Business or Corporate Card and that they used an American Express Card to make a purchase or pay a bill in the month prior to the survey. * Definition of Non-Cardmembers Respondents who reported that they do not have any type of American Express Card and that they used their Visa, MasterCard, Discover Or Diners Club credit or charge card to make a purchase or pay a bill in the month prior to the survey. 1. 3 BACKGROUND Contactless and mobile proximity payments are becoming increasingly prevalent in today s payments landscape. Major payment schemes are investing in mobile payments technology in order to position themselves in the rapidly changing market. Mobile payments also present a variety of opportunities to better serve Cardmembers with ancillary benefits such as loyalty platforms and promotional offers. As a result of this rapidly changing landscape, a variety of new players and considerations have emerged. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), handset manufacturers, Trusted Service Managers (TSMs), and other stakeholders will play a vital role in the development and functionality of mobile payment capabilities. Pursuant to these new developments, American Express has been active in creating mobile payments capabilities to offer to Network Participants. American Express mobile proximity payments leverage existing American Express contactless payments technology and further extend contactless payment capability. Mobile proximity payments enable Cardmembers to wave their mobile handset in proximity of a contactless reader to conduct transactions securely and efficiently. The following guide provides specific details on this capability with respect to benefits, setup, processing, implementation, and investment considerations. MARKET OPPORTUNITY* 75% The top 3 regions for mobile payments (Far East & China, Europe and North America) will represent 75% of the global mobile payment gross transaction value by COUNTRIES In the last 2 years, there have been over 200 trials, pilots, tests and commercial NFC in 54 countries. 500 MILLION According to ABI research, Global NFC-enabled devices will exceed 500 million in 2014, and a minimum of 285 million NFC devices will ship in HELP CAPITALIZE ON THE BUSINESS POTENTIAL Drawing on our experience in digital commerce innovation, capitalize on the business potential of Mobile NFC by growing revenue, driving top-of-wallet preference through creating a better customer experience and upgrading seamlessly. Grow revenue Capitalize on premium Issuer rates. Target high-spending American Express Cardmembers. Drive Cardmembers to spend more often while also increasing ticket size. Access new channels to deliver offers to Cardmembers in real-time. Craft insight-driven loyalty programs to grow relationships. Gain opportunities to partner with leaders in the digital space to capitalize on e-commerce. Minimize operational costs and drive spending by leveraging virtual issuance. Drive top of wallet preference Enable consumer-preferred forms of payment. Ensure a secure and protected shopping experience to gain Cardmember trust and confidence. Understand purchasing behavior to provide relevant follow-up offers and ensure loyalty beyond the POS. Provide a more seamless and convenient customer experience by allowing Cardmembers to easily access instant credit, replace lost/stolen cards, etc. Upgrade virtually seamlessly Be confident in our global experience enabling Issuers and Cardmembers to new payment technologies to ensure a seamless transition process. Our representatives can help provide support and guidance for many steps in the process. Since American Express is the network, Issuer and Acquirer, we understand the challenges each party faces and can help support a smooth transition to contactless and mobile NFC. 1) Juniper Research, July ) "NFC Installed Base to Exceed 500m Devices Within 12 Months" ABI Research, March 26, MAY 2013 ISSUERS & ACQUIRERS (GLOBAL)
4 HOW MOBILE PROXIMITY (NFC) PAYMENTS WORK In order to use mobile proximity payments, a Cardmember simply places their NFC-enabled mobile handset in proximity of the American Express contactless payments POS terminal. Applet facilitates/initiates the transaction data to travel through the phone s NFC chip/antenna to the contactless reader. The secure element (SE) can be located on the SIM card, on a micro-sd card, or embedded within the handset. The location of the SE impacts the level of involvement and control of the key stakeholders. Similar to contactless card transactions, mobile proximity transactions do not require a Cardmember signature if under their local market threshold, as indicated in the Business and Operational Policies Manual. The No Signature program provides increased convenience for low-value transactions for both the Cardmember and merchant. ISSUER SCOPE NFC Chip & Antenna Personal Credentials (Issuer) Secure Element for data storage Expresspay Applet (Network) Mobile Wallet App Provision cards to Secure Element NFC Reader at Merchant Network & Systems Connection to systems for issuance authorization and settlement of payments PROCESS STEPS 1. Secure Element (SE) is placed on a mobile handset enabled with NFC capability. The SE can be located on the SIM card, embedded within the mobile handset, or can be placed on a peripheral memory device (e.g., microsd card). Location of the SE has a significant impact on the role(s) of specific mobile stakeholders (MNOs, handset makers, payment schemes). Also, SE location determines the capability to deploy payment application information Over-The-Air (OTA). 2. American Express contactless payment applet is loaded onto the SE along with the Cardmember s personal credentials, which are supplied by the Issuer. A Trusted Service Manager (TSM) will ensure secure personalization of Cardmember information from the Issuer to the SE and provisioning of the Network s Contactless Applet. 3. Issuer develops mobile wallet application or leverages existing mobile wallet provided by a third party such as an MNO. This provides the front-end user interface for the Cardmember when making mobile proximity payments, and enables entry of passcode, card selection and user preference updates. 4. Cardmember taps their mobile handset at an American Express contactless-enabled payment reader connected to a POS terminal. Cardmember will enter verification information needed to process the transaction, if necessary. 5. POS transactions are processed via Acquirer and American Express Network to the Issuer, per standard transaction processing. The Issuer will be able to identify mobile transactions through specific indicators in Authorization and Settlement messages. 4 MAY 2013 ISSUERS & ACQUIRERS (GLOBAL)
5 IMPLEMENTATION AND INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS ISSUER Implementation: Investment Components*: Host system development developing cryptographic material for personalization. Updating host systems to process American Express contactless transactions TSM relationship and chip personalization Applet development and deployment to Secure Element (Over-The-Air or at point of manufacture) Mobile wallet development or leverage existing mobile wallet Determine payment capability: EMV vs. Mag-Stripe Host systems development and data preparation Chip personalization, procurement Development of proprietary wallet, if necessary Certification and testing Cardmember communication, operations and servicing considerations Contract with TSM Personalization of Cardmember credentials onto phone *Precise costs will depend on number of factors IMPLEMENTATION AND INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS ACQUIRER Implementation: Deploy or upgrade American Express contactless terminals to meet local market needs Terminal hardware/software upgrades deployment of terminal readers, implementation of Expresspay specifications Acquirer Network updates, if not already completed for contactless card transactions Investment Components*: Terminal upgrades or terminal deployment Local market certification and testing Merchant training and support *Precise costs will depend on number of factors Merchant operations updates to merchant billing systems, support of Expresspay disputes policy, merchant implementation incentives 5 MAY 2013 ISSUERS & ACQUIRERS (GLOBAL)
6 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is a Secure Element (SE)? The SE stores card payment applets (e.g. Expresspay, MasterCard PayPass, Visa paywave) and personal Cardmember information. There are three options for the location of the SE: embedded in the handset, stored on the SIM card, or stored on a peripheral memory device (e.g., microsd card). The location of the SE largely drives the business model used to deploy mobile proximity payments. What is a Trusted Service Manager (TSM)? The TSM works with Issuers to provision Cardmember data and the American Express contactless payment applet onto the Secure Element. Depending on ownership and control of the Secure Element, this can be done Over-the-Air or during manufacture. Is there a maximum transaction value for mobile proximity payments? Mobile proximity payments comply with local market practices for contactless transaction thresholds. Transactions above the Card Verification Method (CVM) limit will require CVM (e.g. signature, passcode- PIN). Does AEGNS have a list of approved Secure Elements and handsets? AXP Network has an updated list of all currently approved Secure Elements and handsets available to GNS Issuers on GNSWeb. How are terminals updated for mobile proximity payments? The recently published Expresspay 3.0 specifications incorporate changes to support mobile proximity use cases, such as mobile CVM. Do all contactless policies apply to mobile proximity payments? Yes. All existing American Express contactless policies will apply to mobile proximity payments. Please refer to the latest Business & Operational Manual for policy, technical, and additional information. Where can Cardmembers use mobile proximity payments? AEGNS Cardmembers can use mobile proximity payments wherever American Express contactless transactions are accepted. NETWORK DOCUMENTATION The following documentation are posted to GNSWeb.
