6 Subseries 2 The Chesley Chair Company Ltd. / Heirloom of Canada Ltd. Dates Extent , cm of textual records. 10 photographs Adminstrative History The Chesley Chair Company (later known as Heirloom of Canada Inc.) had its beginnings in October 1909 in the form of the Woelfle Chair Company Limited. The Provisional Directors were: Levi Woelfle, Conrad Krug, Henry Ankenmann, John Krug, William Krug, Christian Krug and George Krug. The company s first products were varnished kitchen chairs, barroom chairs and Boston rockers. By Spring 1910, additional new stock was sold and the company s name changed in May 1910 to The Chesley Chair Company Limited ( CCC ). Michael E. Boos and Louis Asmus also became shareholders and played a part in the early development of the company. In March 1912, financing was provided by Krug Bros. Co. Ltd. to keep the company in operation and an arrangement was made to supply Krug Bros. Co. with oak dining room chairs, which continued until In August 1913, Asmus sold his interest to Conrad Krug ( ) who became President. Christian R. Ankenmann ( C.R. ) was appointed Secretary-Treasurer on August 15, In February 1914, Conrad s son, Wellington Krug ( W.G. ), and C.R. Ankenmann, purchased Conrad s interests. In March 1921, Boos sold his interest in the company to Henry Ankenmann and Conrad Krug. A new addition was erected at the plant in March During the First World War, the plant manufactured large quantities of munitions cases to fill government orders. In 1926, a new 70 x 40 addition was constructed and a sprinkler system installed. In the 1920s, products manufactured by CCC expanded to include: costumers, bedroom chairs, rockers and benches, tea wagons and piano 6
7 benches. In 1924, the Heirloom Cedar Chest made its first appearance. It became so popular that for many years, over half of the factory capacity was devoted to its manufacture. It was discontinued in The company operated for many years with reduced staff through the worst of the Depression in the 1930s. Conrad Krug passed away in The office addition was built during During the Second World War, CCC manufactured wooden parts for the Mosquito Bomber. In February 1946, R.D. Ankenmann, the son of C.R. Ankenmann, joined the firm. Major improvements to both the plant and machinery were undertaken in the post-war period. In June 1963, a company reorganization took place and the assets of the Chesley Chair Company Limited were acquired by the new company, Heirloom of Canada Limited ( Heirloom ). There was no change in management. In August 1965, Heirloom acquired the property and plant formerly known as the Chesley Manufacturing Company to provide the company with a warehousing facility after renovations. With this new acquisition, the total factory area increased to 85,000 sq. ft. In 1966, all plant facilities were for the first time committed to table manufacture. In 1972, the Company converted its showroom to factory space and acquired permanent showroom facilities in the Toronto International Commerce Centre. In 1986, the business was sold to a non-family member. It was later sold again in or around the 1990s to concentrate on Crate furniture, with the name changing to Crate Designs.
