6 GENERAL POLICIES Claims Policy Overview Oxidation Claims Weight Variation Claims Wet in Transit Claims If material appears to be defective, the customer shall attempt to process the material as usual. If the material appears to have numerous imperfections or defects after a minimum of 10% has been processed, the customer may then suspend production and notify AHMSA, and a technical service representative will arrange to inspect the material. The customer shall notify AHMSA of any technical or administrative claims via or customer service representative. Once a claim has been initiated, the Sales and Technical Service departments will be notified in order to seek resolution. AHMSA shall not be held responsible for certain claims arising from the oxidation of our products. Discoloration and staining is inherent from the presence of atmospheric humidity and the collection of condensation in transit. Because of the reactivity of steel, oxidation may be present between the layers in coils or between bundled sheets. AHMSA shall not be held responsible for the following oxidation claims: 1. When material is ordered without oil (dry) or without a suitable surface treatment. 2. When orders specify packaging with less than AHMSA s approved minimum level of protection. 3. When the steel is stored outdoors, or if left unprotected against moisture or sudden temperature changes. Note: If upon delivery the steel coil temperature is below the warehouse temperature, the customer shall not unpack the material until the coil temperature equalizes with the warehouse. A variation up to + /- 1% of the scale weight per invoiced shipment shall be allowed between the customer and AHMSA, before a claim may be initiated. Will be considered in the following cases: 1. Upon delivery, all items have immediately been inspected for the presence of moisture in the package. 2. If moisture in the packaging is present at the time of delivery, an annotation must be made in the delivery log while in the presence of the carrier. AHMSA sales must then be notified immediately. 3. Before the material is delivered to the customer or the customer s contracted carrier. For material that is picked up by the customer, the claim must be made to the customer s contracted carrier. AHMSA sales must then be notified immediately. 4

7 Full Hard Steel, Direct from the Mill Mechanical Properties and Chemical Analysis Permissible Variations Terms and Conditions of Use Order Requirements Hot Rolled Steel, Direct From the Mill Unless otherwise specified, full hard steel is directly shipped from the reduction mill. The variation in head and tail ends thicknesses shall not constitute grounds for a claim. Data referring to mechanical properties or chemical analysis are the result of tests performed on samples obtained from specific locations of the product(s), in accordance with the prescribed sampling procedures. Any warranty thereof is limited to the values obtained at such locations and by such procedures. Products sold by AHMSA shall be subject to the variations, tolerances, and classifications defined by international steel manufacturing standards as referenced in this manual. The number of significant digits applied to testing are in accordance with ASTM E-29. AHMSA is not responsible for the outcomes of any technical recommendation associated with the design, installation and use of AHMSA s products in this publication. Order placement requirements are necessary to maximize production efficiency. The order requirements are subject to change without notice. Consult with an AHMSA sales representative for current production specifications. AHMSA produces hot rolled steel according to international steel manufacturing standards. The hot-rolling process results in a product with defects such as mechanical scratches, marks, scale and surface oxidation. Hot rolled coils are supplied with the Head and Tail ends out off gauge. Neither the variation in head and tail ends thicknesses or coiler marks shall constitute grounds for a claim. 5

13 WIDE PLATE STEEL Plate is manufactured under hot rolling conditions and is supplied with or without mill edge. It is available in thicknesses from to 2.0 and widths from 56 to 120. AHMSA does not guarantee internal quality for steel plate thicker than 2. CLASSIFICATION The following steel types are classified by their resistance to deformation: I.- Low yield strength steel: All steel with a minimum yield strength of 30 ksi. II.- Medium yield strength steel: All steel with a minimum yield strength of 35 ksi. III.- High yield strength steel: All steel with a minimum yield strength of 45 ksi. WIDE PLATE STEEL Note: All chemical composition tables indicate the maximum chemical percentage, unless stated otherwise. All mechanical property tables indicate the minimum performance value, unless stated otherwise. AHMSA manufactures steel plate up to 6 metric tons each. 26 PRODUCT GUARANTEE TABLE, PLATE (HRO) Depending on the chemical composition of the steel, Hot Rolled Plate (HRO) is available with mill edge or cut edge, in a to thickness, and a width of 56 to 120. AHMSA does not guarantee internal quality for steel plate thicker than 2. The surface finish of hot rolled plate is semi-smooth and may have oxidation. Hot rolled plate is used for structural applications or where the surface quality is not critical. The typical applications of AHMSA steel plate are listed in tables 1, 2, 3, and 4 of this section. Attribute Guarantee Remarks Oxidation Not Hot rolled steel plate is delivered as rolled and is not protected. It guaranteed may have oxidation or staining. The manufacturer is not responsible for the risk of corrosion on products that are not oiled or protected. Same conditions for marine environment. Pitting 21 days Material that is not packaged and exposed to the elements is susceptible to pitting. The manufacturer warrants any exposed material to be free from pitting for 21 days. Mechanical 6 months In accordance with the required specifications. properties Camber 6 months In accordance with ASTM A-6 table 11. Surface 6 months According to ASTM A-6, the hot-rolling process results in a product quality with scale and surface oxidation. AHMSA guarantees the surface of the hot rolled steel products to be 95% free from defects such as: mechanical marks, scratches, scale, laminations, flakes, or cracks, all without affecting the thickness tolerance. For special requirements, a production feasibility study shall be required. Flatness 6 months In accordance with ASTM A-6 tables: 13, A1.13, 14, A1.14, 15, and A1.15 Dimensional 6 months The maximum measured distance between diagonals is 1 1/2 out tolerances of square, in accordance with ASTM A-6 tables: 1, 3, A1.1 and A1.3. WIDE PLATE STEEL (GUARANTEES) Note: Claims will be accepted no later than 6 months after shipment. 24

27 HOT ROLLED STEEL COIL HOT ROLLED STEEL COIL Mill edge, hot rolled coils are available in thicknesses of to depending on the complexity of the steel. Hot rolled steel coils are intended for applications where coil breaks and flatness requirements are not critical, or where customers have sheet processing equipment to reduce them. HOT ROLLED STEEL COIL Note: All chemical composition tables indicate the maximum chemical percentage, unless stated otherwise. All mechanical property tables indicate the minimum performance value, unless stated otherwise. AHMSA manufactures steel coils up to 20 metric tons each. Please consult with a technical service representative for larger applications. 25
