2 Infrastructural development and the environment: a possible combination Developing and strengthening the electricity grid does not only mean building new lines. Where possible, in fact, the key world is rationalize, i.e. removing obsolete parts (lines, trestles and pylons) to make way for new high technology solutions with lower environmental impact and obvious positive advantages for the surrounding land and territory. In Valcamonica and Valtellina Terna began works for rationalizing the 220 kv and 132 kv lines, as part of the work for developing the 380 kv S.Fiorano-Robbia line that begun operating on January 20, Work carried out along the Valcamonica and Valtellina power line is the largest rationalization project in Italy on the basis of size and investment 1

Terna s solutions Extensive coordination with Local Bodies and Associations Introducing SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) Memorandum of Understanding with these regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Calabria, Campania, Sicily, Basilicata, Umbria, Tuscany, Marche, Sardinia, Abruzzo and with the Autonomous Province of Trento Pre-authorization agreements for strategic works Within this prospect, the planning phase follows and does not precede the negotiations and the agreements for the implementation of a common project. 9
