INTRODUCTION A. HUMA 1315 is an elective course and can be taken for humanities credit. B. This course is humanity-related and serves to broaden your personal awareness of art. C. Art Appreciation provides concepts, terminology, principles, and theories--the general issues that are relevant to a specific work of art, and the overview of a work's historical context. D. Prerequisites: None. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES A. When asked, you will be able to explain not only the various theories and concepts concerning a work of art, but also the techniques and processes used to produce a work of art. The primary media which we will cover are: oil painting, drawing, etching and sculpture. B. You will be able to identify works by different artists and the periods to which they belong. C. You will understand how canvas is prepared, focusing on traditional methods of the preparation of wood and copper, for painting on with oil paint as well as the process of fresco painting. D. You will be able to speak on how art reflects and/or comments on the society in which it was produced. E. You will demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic language of painting, including such terms as: format, perspective, tone, hue, and etc. F. And, you will be able to discuss movements and periods in the visual arts.
2 III. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL A. Required text book: A World of Art, Henry M. Sayre. This book is purchased through the cite director's office. IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS The instructor strongly urges each student to purchase a bound notebook for note taking. Students will need to copy schematic diagrams, given in lectures, e.g. it is strongly recommended that the student purchases a notebook at least 11 x 8.5 inches. Reading Assignments: Read text assignments, as assigned by the instructor, prior to class and be prepared to discuss the text material, answering instructor questions orally with well-organized thoughts and ideas. Class Attendance: Refer to the CTC catalog, page 56, for detailed policy. Generally, you are expected to attend each class period; to be on time, and to stay the full class period or be counted absent. You are responsible for all course notes and diagrams missed due to absence. Research Paper This project is a written assignment. Writing assignments are required by Central Texas College. That means all of the items expected for the completion of the successful paper--i.e. the paper that is given a passing grade--are strictly required. When you write a paper, on the college level, you are expected to conform to the expectations of Standard English. Also, there may be extra requirements, noted by the instructor. One point will be deducted from the paper for each required item omitted. 1.) The successful paper will be thoroughly and correctly edited. This means no misspellings. Each misspelling will result in the deduction of one point per occurrence. Be aware that five points will be deducted for misspelling the name of the artist, and the art work you are writing about, for the first occurrence, and one point per occurrence after that. Your electronic device has spell check. This is a good time to use it. Beware of homonyms. Mr. Franko requires two spaces between sentences. Overall, proper punctuation is required. Be especially careful that you do not put two or more sentences between the capital letter and the period. Do not fall into the comma splice error. There are many good websites on the Internet which will help you achieve Standard English in your writing projects. Now is a good time to find a personal favorite--if you have not done so already--to use in your future writing endeavors. REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO THIS PROJECT 2.) Choose a topic, from your textbook or in-class notes, and research it from outside sources--not your textbook or notes--and write a three to four page research paper on that subject. Other sources for topic choices may be used, but first get permission from the instructor before starting on your paper. Again, do not use the textbook nor in-class notes for the content of your paper. ---You should have a title page with your name, the title of your paper, and the date upon which it is due, and a works cited page at the end of your paper. Neither the title page nor the works-cited page count as the three to four pages of text. ---The text and the works-cited page will be double spaced and they must have one inch margins. ---Remember: two spaces between sentences.
3 ---The paper will be due on the night/evening of the final exam. 3.) The following requirement is of paramount importance. As you convey information to your reader, in the body of your text, it is imperative that you cite your sources. Failure to do so is plagiarism. Plagiarism is an offence punishable by dismissal from the college. A simple approach that will enable you to avoid the appearance of plagiarism is to cite your source at the end of each paragraph. ---Use of number designations is the preferred method. ---You must use at least three different sources for gathering the information for your paper. These sources may be books, magazines, newspapers or websites. AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE THAT FAILURE TO CITE SOURCES, IN-TEXT AND WITH A WORKS CITED PAGE, IS PLAGIARISM. PLEASE NOTE: Your topic must be confined to either painting, drawing, sculpture or etching. 4.) You are to include one paragraph, of two to three sentences, telling the reader why you chose your particular topic. You may place said paragraph at the beginning or at the end of your paper. 5.) Mr. Franko requires that you number the body of the paper in the upper right hand corner, and that you put your last name in the upper left hand corner of the body of the paper and the works-cited page. 6.) Get your paper topic approved by the instructor before you begin writing the paper. 7.) Again, cite your sources, in text--in the body of the paper--and tell your reader which source it is that you are quoting by reference to the works-cited page. V. EXAMINATIONS There will be two tests during the term, a midterm and a final. These tests will both be memorization-type of tests. There will be a variety of question types--i.e. true false, multiple choice, discussion, or fill in the blank. There will be no open book nor open notes tests. Be advised therefore that there are only three grades for the term, so each grade is important. a.) Midterm (fourth week) review, Examination b.) Final (eighth week) review, Examination At the discretion of the instructor, in-class quizzes may be given in order to help students become proficient in the use of terms, etc. VI. ABSENCE If you miss class(es), it is required that you get the material that you missed from a classmate. Arrangements can be made to make up the exam you missed. Confer with the instructor. VII. LETTER GRADE COMMPUTATIONS % = A 89-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60% = D 59-0% = F
4 IIX. NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INSTRUCTOR A. Course Withdrawal: It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from a class if circumstances prevent attendance. Any student who desires to, or must, officially withdraw from a course after the first scheduled class meeting must file a Central Texas College Application for Withdrawal (CTC Form 59). In addition, the withdrawal form must be signed by the student. CTC form 59 will be accepted at any time prior to the Friday of the twelfth (12th) week of classes during the sixteen (16th) week of the fall and spring semesters. The deadlines for sessions of other lengths are: Ten (10) week session = Friday of the eighth (8th) week Eight (8) week session = Friday of the sixth (6th) week Five (5) week session = Friday of the fourth (4th) week The equivalent date (75% of the semester) will be used for the sessions of other lengths. the specific last day to withdraw is published each semester in the Schedule Bulletin. A student who officially withdraws within the guidelines outlined by Central Texas College will be given the grade of "W", provided the student's attendance and academic performances are satisfactory at the time of the official withdrawal. Students must file a withdrawal application with the college before they may be considered for withdrawal. A student may not withdraw from a course for which the instructor has previously issued the student a grade of "F" for substandard work, or "FN" for failure due to non-attendance. B. Administrative Withdrawal: An administrative withdrawal may be initiated when the student fails to meet college attendance requirements. The instructor will assign the appropriate grade on CTC Form 59 for submission to the registrar. C. Incomplete Grade: The college catalogue states, "An Incomplete grade (IP) may be given in those cases where the student has completed the majority of the course work but, because of personal illness, death in the immediately family, or military orders, the student is unable to complete the requirement for a course...". Prior approval from the instructor id required before the grade of "I" is recorded. A student who fails to attend the last class meeting to take the final exam, for no apparent reason, will receive a zero for the final and an "F" for the course. D. Cell Phones, Beepers, and Etc. As a courtesy to the instructor and fellow students, cell phones, beepers and etc. (all communication devices) will be turned off while the student is in the classroom or laboratory. E. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): Students requiring accommodations for for disabilities are responsible for notifying the instructor. Reasonable accommodations will be granted in compliance with federal and state law and Central Texas College policy. F. Instructor Discretion: The instructor reserves the right of final decision in course requirements. G. Civility: Individuals are expected to be cognizant of what a constructive educational experience is and respectful of those participating in a learning environment; so, courtesy and civility are strictly required, toward teacher and fellow students. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion. Moreover, Mr. Franko requires a profanity-free classroom. Therefore, profanity will not be tolerated. Whether you are speaking informally to a classmate, formally to the instructor, or to the class in general--in any context--this regulation applies--no exceptions. H. Honesty and Integrity: All students are required and expected to maintain the highest standards of scholastic honesty in the preparation of all course work and during examinations. The following are examples of scholastic dishonesty:
5 1. Plagiarism: The taking of passages from the writing of others without giving proper credit to the author is strictly forbidden. 2. Collusion: Using another's work, as one's own; or working together with another person in the preparation of the work, unless joint preparation is specifically approved in advance by the instructor. 3. Cheating: This is the giving or receiving of information on the examinations. Students guilty of scholastic dishonest will be administratively dropped from the course with a grade of "F" and will be subject to disciplinary action. IIX. OBTAINING YOUR COURSE GRADES ---You may discover your final grade from the website for Central Texas College, ctcd.edu; find the student page. ---If you want to see how your final exam and paper were graded, you may bring a large selfaddressed and stamped envelope, to give to the instructor, so that your work may be mailed to you. This is not a requirement. NOTE: The first night is a lecture night, after the reading of the syllabus together. Please come prepared to take notes and stay the entire evening. Bad Weather: In the event of severe weather, i.e. Blizzards, Ice Storms, Tornadoes, etc., contact the instructor, site personnel, or the FT. Riley website to find out if the class is going to meet for that night/evening. As a courtesy, you are asked to please wait twenty (20) minutes before leaving, if the instructor has not arrived by that time. The standard requirements for contact hours is based on the following formula: Two and onehalf (2.5) hours per class times sixteen (16) class meetings equals forty (40) contact hours per term. If holidays fall on the nights we are scheduled to meet, in a given term, the instructor will reschedule make-up time, or entire class meetings, as determined necessary by the instructor or the site director.
