3 Barcode Setup in Response Response CAN print barcodes for just about anything. It s a simple case of choosing the appropriate barcode FONT and using it in your crystal report our ours. You can use barcode fonts in Bin and Item Barcode Labels, picking tickets (click the Advanced button)and Postnet barcodes will print on mailing list/labels printouts if selected. Barcodes can be added to other Crystal Reports using the TrueType fonts we deploy with Response (Free 3 of 9, code39, C39HRP..), look in \r4w\fonts\ folder for these alphanumeric barcode TTF files. You'll need the Crystal Report writer to modify reports, just change the font to one of these barcode fonts and you're all set. Configuring the workstation and Windows: For a workstation to print Barcodes, you will need to install the barcode font that Response uses. Those font files should be in your Colinear\R4W\Fonts folder (directory) or if that directory doesn t exist you can create it. Create the folder then Extract the files from our fonts.zip file here: To install the barcode font at the workstation: 1. On each machine that will print a report containing barcodes, copy the fonts from your R4W\Fonts\ directory into your Windows\Fonts or WinNT\Fonts directory. (TIP: one user told us their IT guru said to drag and drop, not cut and paste, it seems there is a difference, at least in Win XP) 2. Using Windows Explorer view the Windows\Fonts or WinNT\Fonts directory. This will cause the font to be registered with Windows. Barcoded Inventory Labels Response 8x/9x/10x Go to File / Inventory / Warehouse Setup / Print Bin and Item Barcode Labels. Select BIN LABELS or ITEM LABLES. Bin Labels prints barcodes for the BINS, not a barcode label for each item in the bin (choose items labels for that feature and see more below) CoLinear Systems, Inc. 2 of 10 update: 7/21/2011

4 BIN LABLES ITEM LABELS Item Labels allow you to print labels for items in the bin or for an open Purchase order. This utility only prints the ITEM ID, it won t (for example) print a barcode of the UPC for the item. CoLinear Systems, Inc. 3 of 10 update: 7/21/2011

5 11/27/07 tech tips (build 4028) The File / Inventory / Warehouse Setup / Print Bin and Item Barcode Labels does a few things you might not be aware of. First: If you specify "Item Labels", you have an option to print labels for open items on a specific PO. Doing this will print as many barcodes as you have items expected to receive on the PO. In other words, if you have the following PO: Item ABC, qty 50 Item DEF, qty 20 open on a PO, it will print 70 barcodes, not 2. Second: the Bin and Item Labels program does not use Crystal, even though it pops up a preview window, it is actually something called VPE (Virtual Print Engine). VPE gives us some features not available in Crystal like horizontal placement of labels, barcoding symbologies, etc. CoLinear Systems, Inc. 4 of 10 update: 7/21/2011

6 Third: You can create custom label sizes and placement using the "Edit" option next to "Label Products" and your new label will be available under the "Custom" label type. Experiment with this and you may be able to get your printer to play nicely with it. Mailing List and Label Barcodes: Postnet barcodes will print on mailing list/labels printouts if selected. Testing your barcode fonts as described below applies. For more information on the mailing list and label feature, go here: /Modules%20(standard)/MailingListandLabels.doc Picking Ticket Barcodes: When you want to print the picktick with a barcode, go to the dialog box for printing picking tickets 1. Click on the Advanced button 2. Check the Print Barcodes checkbox 3. Select Crystal Code39 Font from the dropdown form. 4. Check Shipping Method and ZIP Code and other options as desired. 3. You also need to turn on the barcode option in the ADVANCED button in the picking ticket selection screen END Barcode fonts setup.txt Testing your Barcode with your Scanners Troubleshooting your barcode printing with your barcode readers (scanners) If your barcode scanners (readers) don't recognize the printed barcode on your picking ticket, it's possible the scanner can't pick up a smaller barcode or that the quality is not good enough from your printer. (this problem is more common with old dot matrix printers) Here is a good test By default we use the barcode font called "Free 3 of 9" in 32 pt size in the picktick.rpt file. You can create a Word document and enter the following text: The "*"s are important. Then highlight the whole thing and change it to the "Free 3 of 9" font. Print this word document out on your printer and see if it scans properly. If not, increase the font size, print it out, and try to scan again. Continue to do this until the barcode is read correctly or until the font size is ridiculously big. If a larger font size fixes the problem, you can change the report to print in the larger size. If it never scans properly, we'll have to try another barcode font. This may require that you have Crystal Reports to customize your picktick.rpt file or have us do this for you. 7 When using the Crystal Code39 Barcode font, there is no need to specify beginning and ending triggers. We use a formula in Crystal called "StringToCode39" which wraps the barcode string in asterisks (e.g. turns "12345" into ""). By default, we output the barcode using the "Free 3 of 9" barcode font (free3of9.ttf). We also ship 5 other TrueType barcode fonts with the system. They are in the \r4w\fonts directory. These are: c39hrp24dhtt.ttf c39hrp24dltt.ttf c39hrp36dltt.ttf c39hrp48dhtt.ttf code39.ttf Test these fonts in Word to see if your barcode reader can recognize the barcode. If so, you can modify the picktick (or we can do it for you, for a fee) to use the different font. Keep in mind that we tested the "Free 3 of 9" font here, it worked for us (with a MetroLogic MS951 Scanner), and it is working for several other users. Perhaps your barcode reader can read Code39 but not 3 of 9 or vice/versa? (I'm pretty sure they are different symbologies -- but not 100% sure). Test reports by wrapping whatever they want to barcode with asterisks. e.g. I want these to print in barcode font Take the above and paste it into a word doc and then modify the font style and font size of each with the barcode fonts. Once again those are in the \r4w\fonts directory. 8 this is in c39hrp48dhtt 48 pt this is in c39hrp24dltt.ttf 48 pt Print YOUR word document out and test scanning each barcode into a Notepad file. You can test other fonts this way. Find the font you need for your custom crystal reports, then let us know if you need CoLinear to make your report modifications with a different font. Additional options for formatting the barcode Add'l OPTION #1 8/13/03 Customer said: In a nutshell this is the problem: 1. Scanner won't read existing "Crystal Code 39 font" selection in the path Orders>Print/reprint picking tickets>advanced>print barcodes>drop down Orders>menu. 2. Did the trouble shooting with Word as in your documentation, and found that the font free3of9.ttf worked perfectly. 3. read the documentation further that says that this is the one you use as a default. Could my report picktick.rpt be using code39.ttf instead? I amthinking this as the drop down menu mentioned above says "Crystal Code 39 font" not "free3of9" If so could you please change it so it will use the free3of9 font? I do understand that there is a fee involved. //Colinear tech note: picktick.rpt uses the "Free 3 of 9" font. IF he tested that in Word and it worked, then it should work in Crystal Too. In the "Advanced" settings of picktick, try setting the font size to 32, and do NOT check the "shipping method" and "zipcode" for "barcode constists of ShipTo ID Plus...". Try again with these settings. If it still does not work, they have to modify a picktick.rpt using one of the different barcode fonts (there are several). CUSTOMER REPORTED THAT NOT checking shipping method and zipcode solved the problem Add'l Option #2 (3/2002) If they still have trouble getting their scanners to read the picktick barcode, they should try the following: Since build 1074, we are forcing the BarCode formula to print in the "Free 3 of 9" font. 9 make it print in another font, he should edit the picktick.rpt (or whichever report he is mapping for picktick.rpt) as follows: Create another formula field called BarCode2. The contents of the BarCode2 formula should be: This will make it duplicate the data from the BarCode formula. Next, suppress the original BarCode formula by right clicking on the BarCode field, choose "Format Field", and click "Suppress" on the "Common" tab. Overlay your new BarCode2 formula on top of the existing BarCode formula and change it to the desired font and size. (you will need to do this to both shipping labels) When printing picking tickets, choose the "Crystal Code 39 Font" in the Picking Tickets advanced setup.
