All Getz versions are wellpriced secondhand; prices have come down since the launch of Hyundai s newer i20 supermini. The Getz was replaced by the i20 in Mildly refreshed in 2007, its reliability has been wellproven and later cars will come with the balance of Hyundai s comprehensive fiveyear warranty. The tall body and large doors provide good access and headroom. The cabin is logically designed and even base versions come with aircon as standard. The 235litre boot grows to 555 litres with the seats down, but space for passengers in the rear seats is more cramped than in some rivals. The 1.1 petrol lacks power and isn t well suited to motorway work. We recorded an average of 43.5mpg (officially 51.4mpg). The 1.4 petrol gives lively performance but economy isn t as good: we measured 39.8mpg versus the claim of 47.1mpg. We also tried the 1.5 diesel, which returned 51.4mpg again, some way short of the official figure of Secondhand buyers may be impressed by the dependability of the Getz. It scored a decent threestar reliability rating in the latest Which? Car Survey. The most commonlyreported faults are with the air con, exhaust, clutch and nonengine electrics. Cheapest Model to buy used 1.1 GSI 3dr Used price: 1,775 Cheapest Model to Run (new) New price: Running costs: (3 years/36,000 miles) Owner s View As a commuter/local runaround car it is perfect. It is cheap to run and just gets on with the job.
Hyundai Getz ( ) On the road The interior of the Getz is mostly well laid out and build quality is pretty good. It s a stable and secure drive, but the 1.1 engine is weak. Performance The 1.1 petrol in the Getz is weak and best avoided. With a 060mph time of 16 seconds, it s one of the slowest cars we ve tested safe overtaking isn t always easy. The engine can sound rough and strained at high revs, too. Selecting forward gears is easy but quickly choose reverse and you ll be greeted by a loud crunch. You get the same crunching noise selecting reverse on the gearbox in the 1.5 diesel too and again it s a pretty noisy engine at high revs, but performance is better. Given that the 1.5 diesel offers similar performance to the 1.4 petrol, it makes a lot of sense, thanks to its excellent fuel consumption. But if you can t bear to touch that greasy diesel pump, the 1.4 petrol offers a decent turn of speed. It superceded the 1.3 petrol in 2005; our tests also showed this engine to be reasonably peppy. Acceleration (3762mph) diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) 8.5 secs diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) 7.5 secs petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) 11.9 secs petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) 8.6 secs petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) 8.2 secs Performance We use the sophisticated electronic timing equipment to record standingstart and ingear acceleration, and repeat each test several times. Ride comfort Ride comfort is assessed by our laboratory experts who have driven hundreds of thousands of miles in a myriad of different models. Ride comfort The Getz smoothes out most bumps, potholes and road imperfections well; only larger ones make themselves felt. diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007)
Hyundai Getz ( ) On the road continued... Handling The Getz feels stable on the road and understeers in corners, a safer option for the less experienced driver. Steering is smooth and quite precise and, with its fairly small turning circle, the Getz is easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Handling diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) Brakes The brakes on the Getz are responsive and powerful. Onthelimit handling is explored well away from public roads to ensure a fair test. Our obstacle avoidance test is one of the harshest tests in the industry.. Brakes Braking distance (620mph) diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) 41.0m diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) 41.0m petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) 41.0m petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) 41.8m petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) 39.5m Refinement and noise The cabin is quite well insulated from noise, but at motorway speeds all engines make themselves heard. It s not enough to be a real nuisance, but it s there. Cruising noise diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) 71dB diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) 66dB petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) 71dB petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) 70dB petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) 72dB The Which? Car braking test measures stopping distance from 620mph and is repeated ten times in quick succession to highlight any brake fade issues. Refinement and noise The Which? Car experts use a decibel meter to record interior sound levels at common UK motorway speeds, and combine this with subjective assessments to arrive at an overall score.
Hyundai Getz ( ) On the road continued... Cabin and controls The Getz is mostly well built and the doors close solidly and smoothly. The instruments and main controls are also easy to reach and well laid out, but some controls, such as the air conditioning and the rear demister, are placed a bit too low down. The steering wheel is adjustable for height, but not reach, while the interior lights are nice and bright. diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) Visibility and parking Wide roof pillars, and door mirrors which make things seem further away than they actually are, contribute to less than ideal visibility from the Getz. Also, the front of the car isn t visible from the driver s seat due to the angle of the bonnet. The slightly raised driving position compensates somewhat. Externally, the bumpers are rather fragile and prone to scratching when parking; they appear to be designed more for looks than to offer any real protection. Also, the rear fog lights are integrated into the rear bumper and are therefore themselves vulnerable to damage. Cabin and controls We penalise cars with difficult controls, and we look for things like backlit light switches and easytouse heating and ventilation adjustments. Visibility and parking Visibility is a major issue for motorists today, so each car gets a 360degree swivel view test to reproduce the driver s eye view and any obscured areas. Turning circle diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) 10.8m diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) 10.8m petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) 10.7m petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) 10.7m petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) 10.8m
Hyundai Getz ( ) Comfort and practicality The seats in the Getz are comfortable, although some might find knee space a bit too tight in the back if there are tall people sitting in the front. The boot is average for the class. Getting in and out A tall body, large doors and low door sills make getting in and out of the Getz pretty straightforward, but remote central locking was fitted only to the more expensive models in the range. The cabin in the front is wide, and headroom is good. In the back, knee room is a little lacking, although width and headroom are quite good. diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) Seat space and comfort The front seats are firm and give good support. The driver s seat is height and tiltadjustable, although the range of adjustment isn t great. There s a good left footrest for the driver. The rear seats recline too, but offer little thigh support, as the seats are low to the floor. The rear seats are really designed for two passengers, so it s pretty uncomfortable with three adults in the back. diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) Getting in and out We take measurements all around the driver and passenger s door apertures and note the height of the seat, door sills and step down onto the car floor. The best cars don t require too much bending or stretching to get in and out. Seat space and comfort We assess seat comfort subjectively, using our road testers expert knowledge and experience from thousands of different cars. And we measure the head, legand elbowroom on offer in every seat, to see how well the car caters for people of all shapes and sizes.
Hyundai Getz ( ) Comfort and practicality continued... Boot and storage Boot capacity in the Getz is average for the class at 235 litres, but it s a good square shape. You can fold down the split/fold rear seats to create a completely flat load area of just under 555 litres (measured to the window line), though first you have to remove the rear head restraints. The tailgate opens easily but you need to lift luggage over a high lip. Boot space (seats up/down) diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) 235 litres / 555 litres diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) 235 litres / 555 litres petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) 235 litres / litres petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) 235 litres / 555 litres petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) 235 litres / 555 litres Heating and ventilation Unusually for a small, inexpensive car, air conditioning was standard on even the cheapest model in the range. The heater is powerful too, helping to warm up the car in a short time on cold days. As with most cars, the rear of the cabin takes a bit longer to acclimatise. Boot and storage Carmakers give official stats for boot space, but our tests are more realistic. We load the boot up with measuring blocks only as far as the rear window line, so that luggage is well secured and won t obscure rear visibility. We repeat the test with the rear seats up, and folded down (where possible). Heating and ventilation diesel 1.5CRDi (82bhp) manual 5door (2004) diesel 1.5CRDi (88bhp) manual 5door (2005) petrol 1.1 (63bhp) manual 3door (2004) petrol 1.3 (82bhp) manual 5door (2003) petrol 1.4 (95bhp) manual 5door (2007) Feel sorry for the tester who has to warm each car up from a frosty 10 degrees in our climate chamber. Starting with a cold engine, we measure how long it takes to warm up the front and rear of the cabin. Diesel cars usually take longer. We also check the effectiveness of air conditioning, where fitted.
Hyundai Getz ( ) Running costs and depreciation Servicing costs are slightly more expensive than average for the class, but other running costs are as you d expect for a supermini. The cheapest Getz to insure, the 1.1, falls into lowcost insurance group 4, with the topspec CDX sitting in group 6, about average for this sector; there are no highperformance Getz models for insurance companies (or drivers) to get excited about. Servicing costs on the Getz are towards the higher end of the supermini class, the diesels costing a little more to maintain than the petrol versions. Fuel consumption Hyundai claims the 1.1 Getz should average 51.4mpg, though we managed much less 43.5mpg in our tests. Again, the manufacturer s published figure of 62.8mpg for the 89bhp 1.5 diesel seems optimistic; in our test, we achieved only 51.4mpg. Petrol (combined mpg, claimed) 37.1 mpg 51.4 mpg Fuel consumption We test fuel economy under strict lab conditions using realistic test cycles to reveal the facts behind the figures. Our figures rarely match manufacturer claims as, unlike the official mpg test, we measure economy with both a hot and cold engine, and on the motorway. Security Which? safety rating Active (crash avoidance) Passive (crash safety) Child Pedestrian Security scores come from the security experts at Thatcham, who break into hundreds of cars each year. Most modern cars are very difficult to drive away, but are still too easy to steal from. Security The Getz doesn t offer particularly good resistance to theft, but at least it s not an obvious target for thieves. It puts up a poor defence against smashandgrab opportunist thefts and breakins. Theft of car: Theft from car:
Hyundai Getz ( ) Which? Car Survey results The Which? Car Survey is the UK s biggest and best reliability and owner satisfaction survey. In 2013, drivers told us about 57,182 cars, covering more than 450 million miles in the previous 12 months (that s equivalent to driving 18,398 times around the world). This unique feedback allows us to rate satisfaction and reliability for hundreds of new and used cars. Note Star ratings below are from 15 (1 is very poor and 5 is very good). Percentages shown under Most common faults indicate the proportion of owners reporting each problem in the past 12 months.
