The great thing about that metal roof is that you have none of the disadvantages of traditional softtops; security is still good,as is crash protection, yet the convertible experience is available at the touch of a button. The Focus has a twopiece folding roof (other rivals are threepiece) which means the boot has to be very long to accommodate it; This compromises the overall elegance, but it does mean a bestinclass bootspace with the roof raised. The Focus CC was offered with two petrol engines or a diesel option, though the 2.5litre fivecylinder engine used in the hot Focus hatchbacks was never offered in the CC. If you want an automatic gearbox, it was only ever available in the 2.0 petrol car. While you might think an electric folding roof is the height of luxury, this Ford makes a meal of lowering its roof. Fully 28 seconds are required to complete the operation, compared to 20 seconds for the Renault Megane CC. This might not sound like a lot, but it might make the difference between getting wet and staying dry in a sudden downpour. In the most recent Which? Car survey, we didn t get enough data on the Focus CC to rate it, but Ford achieves a respectable reliability score of three stars. 2 Ford Focus CC ( ) On the road The Focus CC drives well, much like the hatchback it is based on. The 1.6 and 2.0litre petrol, plus 2.0litre diesel choices don t offer real thrills, but they re as good as it gets. Performance Given the choice between the 2.0litre petrol and diesel engines, we d plump for the latter. Overall flexibility is better, meaning fewer gearchanges are required to maintain rapid forward progress. Although the diesel is down on power, it has more torque than the petrol, which is more useful in everyday driving situations. The petrol engine needs plenty of revs to extract its potential, which can be tiring. The main difference between the two is that the petrol car has a fivespeed gearbox, whereas the diesel s box is a sixspeed unit. Both shift well, with a clean action, but the lack of a sixth ratio in the petrol car is a bit puzzling. Motorway speeds require surprisingly high revs, where a sixth overdrive ratio would drop the revs and make cruising more relaxing. A 1.6litre petrol engine is also on offer, and there s the option of a fourspeed automatic gearbox with the 2.0litre petrol engine. The car retains good stability even at high speeds, so absolute cornering potential is surprisingly high. It s agile and nimble too, and all in all, good fun to drive around twisty roads. diesel 2.0TDCi (136bhp) manual 2door (2007) petrol 2.0 (145bhp) manual 2door (2007) Brakes There s nothing wrong with the way the Focus CC slows down: the brakes themselves are very powerful and don t seem to exhibit any fade (loss of performance after repeated heavy use). But the brake pedal itself is situated a little high off the floor, so it feels a bit awkward to use. The worst offender is wind noise. Other cars of this type manage to remain fairly hushed, even with their hood down, but this Focus CC is quite noisy. 4 Ford Focus CC ( ) On the road continued... Cabin and controls Anyone familiar with the Focus hatchback will feel right at home in the Focus CC the dashboard is virtually identical. This means all the controls are easy to find and operate, though there are a couple of Ford idiosyncrasies, such as the windscreen wiper stalk, which you have to push forward to wash the screen. But when inclement weather strikes, the view outward isn t so clever particularly towards the rear. The view to the side is helped by the frameless windows, which give an uninterrupted expanse of glass. The Quickclear heated front screen (optional in base models, fitted on 2 and 3 spec) is great for clearing a frosty screen, but at nighttime the forward view is compromised a bit by the heating elements in the screen. The high boot makes reversing tricky, so we d suggest opting for parking sensors. Cabin and controls We penalise cars with difficult controls, and we look for things like backlit light switches and easytouse heating and ventilation adjustments. Visibility and parking Visibility is a major issue for motorists today, so each car gets a 360degree swivel view test to reproduce the driver s eye view and any obscured areas. 5 Ford Focus CC ( ) Comfort and practicality The Focus CC has a surprisingly large boot but only with the roof raised. It s a comfortable car in the front, but the rear accommodation is very limited and should be considered for occasional use, or small children, only. Getting in and out The doors on the Focus CC are very large, which help and hinders in equal measure. If you have space to open them fully, it s easy to get in and out but tight carparks can limit how wide you can open those doors. They have a good range of adjustment, too. The driving position is compromised by the wide centre console, and you ll find your left leg resting against this, which could become uncomfortable on longer journeys. The rear seats are really cramped, and you re unlikely to fit any adults in behind a fullsize driver. The best cars don t require too much bending or stretching to get in and out. Seat space and comfort We assess seat comfort subjectively, using our road testers expert knowledge and experience from thousands of different cars. And we measure the head, legand elbowroom on offer in every seat, to see how well the car caters for people of all shapes and sizes.

This is better than in most rivals, although this space shrinks considerably with the roof stowed (it has to go somewhere). That lack of space is exacerbated further if you opt for the wind deflector. Ventilation isn t a problem with the roof down, but there is some buffeting; this can be cured by specifying the optional wind deflector. Boot and storage Carmakers give official stats for boot space, but our tests are more realistic. We load the boot up with measuring blocks only as far as the rear window line, so that luggage is well secured and won t obscure rear visibility. We repeat the test with the rear seats up, and folded down (where possible). Starting with a cold engine, we measure how long it takes to warm up the front and rear of the cabin. Diesel cars usually take longer. We also check the effectiveness of air conditioning, where fitted.

7 Ford Focus CC ( ) Running costs and depreciation The Focus CC was an expensive car to buy new, but it s now available used for reasonable prices. Overall running costs are quite low, thanks to everyday Focus underpinnings. The 1.6litre model sits in an attractively low insurance group, but you ll see that jump if you choose any of the other models. Servicing costs are reasonable, although tax bandings are not superlow. Fuel consumption Fuel consumption As you d expect, the 2.0litre petrol can t match the economy of its diesel counterpart. The petrol car recorded an average of 35.8mpg in our tests (officially, it ll do 37.6mpg). The diesel was better, though bear in mind it s around 1500 more expensive in the first place; it managed 44.8mpg, a bit short of the official figure of 47.9mpg.
