CONTENTS Executive Summary... 3 Total Energy Breakdown... 4 Overview... 5 Total Electricity Breakdown... 8 Total Natural Gas Breakdown Water Consumption Energy Benchmarking Appendix A Energy Usage Analysis
Executive Summary Total utilities cost (energy and water) for 11/12 is 5.494M, which is an increase of 12.6% on the previous year, driven primarily by the price increase of electricity. There is a reduction in electricity usage of 3.1% in comparison to 2010/11 with both Main Campus and Lee Malting s showing volume decrease in electricity. However the cost of electricity increased by 18.1%, due to price increases. Gas usage has decreased by 18.% with the cost of gas for the year, increasing by 2%. (Analysis, excl Campus Accomm, Mardyke Arena and CUH) 3
Energy usage and cost: The total energy cost for 2011/12 was 5.23m which is a 13.5% increase on the 2010/11 cost, while the energy consumption has decreased by 10% when compared to the previous year. This surpasses the UCC target of a 3% reduction in energy usage annually. Electricity usage decreased by 3.1% whilst gas usage decreased by 18% when compared to 2010/11. 4
Total Energy Breakdown Overview The following graphs highlight the total usage and cost for both electricity and gas and also and the associated related CO 2 emissions over the past 4 years at UCC. Electricity cost at approximately 3.9m is an 18.1% increase on 2010/11. (Incl Western Gateway) The above bar chart highlights that usage has decreased for 2011/2012 by 3.1% when compared to the previous year. 5
Natural gas cost at approximately 1.33m is a 2% increase on the previous year s total with a decrease in overall consumption of 18%. The decrease in consumption is due to a warmer winter. The previous bar chart highlights that gas usage and cost have decreased substantially for 2011/2012 when compared to the previous year. 6
UCC Carbon Footprint for 2011/2012 amounted to 16,369t CO 2. This highlights a 6.5% decrease in total carbon emissions with respect to electricity and gas usage. Overall, electricity emissions decreased by 1.2% while gas emissions decreased over the year by 19.8%.The electricity from green suppliers provides a substantial reduction in UCC s carbon footprint. The above bar chart highlights that related CO2 emissions 1 follow the patterns displayed by both electricity and gas consumption. 1 Note: The CO 2 emissions were calculated using emission factors of 185gCO 2 /kwh for natural gas, 538gCO 2 /kwh for grid sourced electricity and 70% of grid emissions for CHP power 7
Total Electricity Breakdown The following graphs highlight the usage & cost breakdown for electricity and also the associated electricity related CO 2 emissions over the past 4 years at UCC. As can be seen from the above bar chart, Main Campus and the Maltings both recorded a decrease in electricity consumption for 2011/2012 when compared to the previous year. 8
As can be seen from the above bar chart, electricity costs have increased for all buildings due to the increases in the price of electricity. 9
Main Campus electricity consumption (kwh/m2/annum) during 2011/12 decreased by 6.3% surpassing the 5% target against 2010/11. Savings of 6.3% electricity usage were achieved the previous year 2011/12 versus the base year 2010/11. This builds on the cumulative savings of 8.9% that had been achieved by end 2011/12 against the base year 2007/08 as shown graphically below. 10
Total Natural Gas Breakdown The following graphs highlight the usage & cost breakdown for natural gas and also the associated gas related CO 2 emissions over the past 4 years at UCC. The above bar chart highlights that gas usage has decreased for 2011/2012 for all buildings compared to the previous year. Main Campus and Other Buildings have seen a large decrease. The consumption figures above are not degree day corrected. 11
As can be seen from the above bar chart, gas costs for 2011/12 have shown the effects of increasing gas tariffs, but the price has stabilised after last year. 12
Water Consumption Water usage decreased by 3% compared to previous year s figures. This was achieved due to continued monitoring usage and further implementation of water conservation measures. Water cost has slightly decreased when compared to the previous year s figures. 13
Energy Benchmarking Energy Benchmark (kwh/student) The energy usage per student benchmark for UCC for this year stands at 2,942kWh/student. Degree day correcting this to compare against the base year gives a degree day corrected figure of 2,987kWh/student. This is in comparison to a degree day corrected figure of 3,031kWh/student for 2010/11. This surpasses the UCC annual target of a 3% reduction in total energy as it represents a total reduction of 11%. UCC minus the Maltings gives 2,412kWh/student for 2011/12 as compared to 2,342kWh/student the previous year. A summary of the benchmarking is given in the table below. Total UCC DDC Total UCC (vs. base year) DDC Total UCC (excl Maltings) (vs. base year) Benchmark kwh/pp kwh/pp kwh/pp 2011/12 2,942 3,064 2, /11 3,304 3,031 2, /10 3,339 3,014 2, /09 3,493 3,248 2,534 14
Appendix A Energy Usage Analysis The graph below highlights the effective usage (per student) of electricity across the campus and highlights the comparison of total electricity usage per student over the past 4 years. These figures include the Maltings consumption which is very high in comparison to other college areas. The trend indicates this key performance indicator (KPI) is reducing year on year. 15
The above graph highlights the effective usage (per student) of electricity across the campus exc. the Maltings. 16
The graph below highlights the effective usage (per student) of gas across the campus and highlights the comparison of total gas usage per student over the past 4 years. These figures include the Maltings consumption which is very high in comparison to other college areas. 17
The above graph highlights the effective usage (per student) of natural gas across the campus when removing the Maltings. 18
