With the Informant now in electronic form, the membership sees the only reason for paying dues is for the Tour. My proposal is to out the newly released issue of the Informant and place only the previous issue online. So for instance, this issue would only be available to the membership by and the previous issue would remain online until the January 2015 issue is released. So the membership would always have the most recent copy, not the internet public. A small point I know but something I think would add a little more value to your CSCA membership. Just something to consider. If you have something to say, remember that the CSCA has a Facebook page for just this type of discussions. With this issue of course is the feature on the Colorado Open, the largest tournament held in the state. Congratulations to Jesse Cohen for becoming the state champion! New elections for the Board of Directors was also held between the 4th and 5th rounds. Some new faces and some returning ones. Be sure to communicate with the Board members whether through the online Facebook forum or by . This is also an added value of your membership dues, so utilize it to better chess in Colorado for all chess players. May Caissa be with you. Fred Eric Spell k In This Issue 3. 3 As your new CSCA President, thank you for your confidence in me. I will work hard to earn your respect. All Board meetings are open to our members and to the public. I believe in sharing information with you, our members, and will answer your questions (usually by so we have records). I want to introduce your Board of Directors: Paul Covington, President; Joe Fromme, Jr., Vice President (Joe was selected to replace Brad Lundstrom, who resigned before the first Board meeting.); Shirley Herman, Treasurer; Jesse Cohen, Secretary (Joe Haines resigned his Secretary position for personal reasons. On behalf of the membership and board, thank you Joe for serving us for two years!); Brian Wall, Member at Large; and Jackson Chen, Junior Representative. I encourage all of our Colorado chess players to get involved in our effort to make Colorado chess the best in the USA. How can that be accomplished? Your ideas for improving our CSCA operations is one way. I have already started contacting chess clubs and meeting groups asking them, "How can the CSCA support you better?" If I haven't contacted you yet, then me so we can have a conversation. I plan to put these suggestions into an article. Please send in your ideas so they can be shared. The Board has scheduled our first meeting for September 28th but we have already started working together approving several things. One that I have been trying to get started of some time is now official. The Colorado Chess Hall of Fame is officially sanctioned by the Board and is launching (Air Force talk). The first class will be inducted at the Colorado Open A committee to manage this process has been appointed and approved. A separate article with details is in this edition. We have been discussing the criteria for selecting the participants for the Colorado Closed (main and Scholastic) and hope to finalize that in time to be included in the edition. If we don't get that completed in time, that information will be posted after the board meeting on the website under President's Plate. Another way you may participate is ing me ideas you want the board to add to the agenda. We may not be able to act on every idea but each idea will be considered. Vital to every organization is membership. Thank you to all who have renewed and paid your dues. To those who have not yet renewed, I encourage you to renew so we have a strong membership base and funds to implement activities for our members. Every President for some time has wanted to bring a National tournament to Colorado. I want to appoint a longterm committee to work this project. It is something that will take several years, require some serious funding, and require consistent effort to achieve. If you are interested in serving on this committee, me. I will try to have summaries of Board action in every Informant. These will include the Minutes, Financial reports, and Board actions. Look at the President's Plate on the CSCA website for information in between issues of the Colorado Chess Informant. I will post information there regularly. Again, thank you for voting for me. Together, I hope we can make this a landmark year for Colorado chess! Paul Covington CSCA President Page 3

4 Page Colorado Open by Richard Buck Buchanan Chief Tournament Director This past Labor Day weekend was a great one for Colorado chessplayers, as our 158 player tournament was the most successful in decades. Things went smoothly. Registration was well handled by other members of the CSCA Board, and except for round 5, delayed a bit by the Membership Meeting, games started on time! I was delighted to see many old friends as well as the core of Colorado's strongest and many delightful young players. Jesse Cohen is the Colorado State Chess Champion, the only one to score 4.5 out of 5 points. Competition was fierce at the top: high-rated players were hit with draws and losses. Ryan Swerdlin won against both LM Brian Wall and Randy Canney, the two top masters. Only Jesse could score against Ryan; that was perhaps the secret of his success. Half a point behind the Champ were Zachary Bekkedahl, Gunner Andersen, Chris Peterson, Avinaya Subedi, and, of course, Ryan. Other prize winners were Rhett Langseth, Joshua Jex, Justin Alter, Isaac Martinez, and Kurt Kondracki. Longtime chess teacher Billy Willson was top rated in the U1800 section, and showed us why as he led throughout and took first place comfortably. Andy Wu, Matthew Zeller, and Akshat Jain followed him half a point back. The winners of U1600 money were Vibi Varghese and Anand Vissa. (Now there's a good first name for a chess player.) The sensation of the U1400 section was 7-year old Sullivan McConnell, who was the only one to enter the last round with a perfect 4-0. He did lose that one to tournament winner Evan Akhavan, but he still joined the pack for the next level of prize money. Others finishing with 4-1 were K.W. Cowin, Nelson Perez, and Shamik Bhat. Devon Wall won the class prize money along with Dan Renauer, so he was the family breadwinner for this occasion. Proud poppa, eh, Brian? Friday night we warmed up with the Colorado G/10 championship tournament, a 6 round affair with 40 players. The winner was Chris Peterson on a narrow tiebreaks lead over LM Brian Wall and Gunnar Andersen. Other money winners were Isaac Martinez, Dean Clow, Zhiji Li, Brady Barkemeyer, and William Wolf. The standings for this tournament can be found at So it was a great chess weekend. Yes, mistakes were made and corrected, but at the end we all have a memory of a tournament to be proud of. Like last year, a lot of people helped put it together, and we can only wait to see what the next one will look like! 8 The Sixth Edition of the Monument Open Page 8 by Fred Eric Spell Chief Tournament Director Another beautiful weekend in Palmer Lake in which 47 players arrived to play some combative chess. I can't thank everyone enough as it was a joy to hold this event. After the dust had settled, Jason Loving took home the Monument Open Stein (Trophy) as this years champion. Congratulations Jason! Once again I am indebted to Joe Fromme, Jr. for his invaluable help as he lessend the workload for me in running this event. I hope that everyone had a wonderful time. The Inn at Palmer Divide provides some of the best scenery in the state. With the success of this event I look forward to holding the seventh edition of this established tournament next year! Who s there? 1300 Brian Wall Brian Wall who? 25.Qc6# checkmate. 2. Anthea took advantage of Gunnar's time trouble with the mating net, 47.Rc8 Re8 48.Rxe8 d2 49.Rg8# Qxg4!! got a double exclam from Fritz 13. This move wins a rook. If 30.hxg4 Ng3+ forks the White king and queen. If 30.Qxd3 Qxh3# Qd3!! was missed in the game (White actually resigned in this position!) After this move, Black has no way to move the Black queen, and protect the back rank threat of Rf8#. 5. White has several good moves, but Chris found the computer s best move, the brilliant interference move 21.Bg7!! You can see Chris s annotations and analysis here: 6. Congrats to Paul on being elected CSCA President! White has mate in 2 with 26.Rg7+ Kh8 27.Rxg6# 7. Brian has been having lots of fun playing "The Lemming" opening, 1...Na6, in Colorado in Here the Lemming Knight delivers a nice smothered mate with 28...Nf2+ 29.Kg1 Nxh3+ 30.Kh1 Qg1+ 31.Nxg1 Nf2# 8. Anthea somehow missed a mate in two and went for a perpetual check with Rf7+ Re7+ Rf7+, etc. Better was moving the rook anywhere on the e-file (d7 works also), forcing the king to g8, then back rank mating with Re8# such as 60...Rxe3+ 61.Kg8 Re8#. This was a pretty crazy game where Black was playing with three pieces against a queen, so was probably pretty mentally exhausted after 60 moves Rxe7 removes the knight from defending the c8 square Kxe7 41.c8Q. 16 Page 16 Pikes Peak Open by Richard Buck Buchanan Chief Tournament Director The 2014 Pikes Peak Open went very well: 67 players, no floods, good accommodations in the Manitou Art Center (though the Manitou Springs City Hall is once again open for business, and we will be using it for the Winter Springs Open). It was a strong event, with the cutoff for first round pairings in the 1700 s. A lot of familiar faces were there, as well as some newcomers that added to the tournament. It was good to see New Mexico players and the Zeng family from Kansas. Gunnar Andersen won the tournament with a 5-0 sweep. He had help along the way, as young Justin Alter beat both LM Brian Wall and Chris Peterson, while Kurt Kondracki took points from David Mendoza (paired at 2184 based on his FIDE rating) and Dr. Carlos Santillan. Karl Irons of Pagosa Springs defended the other end of the age spectrum, scoring a clear second with 4.5 points, which included wins from Katie Wise and Avinaya Subedi. It was great to see the young McConnell boys at play, and they were very impressive. Note in particular the mature, creative game Sully won from Rebecca Herman, who has been playing very well in recent tournaments. We all had a good time, and things even finished at a decent hour. Much thanks to Natalie Johnson, manager of the Manitou Art Center, for all the help she gave us.
