A small testing trench was dug on the seafloor to better understand the nature of the cargo transported on board a second-century B.C. merchantman, and the possible presence of its hull. Oversaw the underwater archaeological campaign organized by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana on the island of Pianosa, jointly with NURC (NATO Underwater Research Center). An AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) was used to survey the submerged archaeological sites of the island. Project was to verify the presence of a second-century B.C. shipwreck with a cargo of black-glazed pottery (Campanian A and B) in the area. Oversaw the Western Greek Colonies Underwater Project, aimed at the study and virtual reconstruction of a third-century A.D. navis lapidaria shipwrecked in the area. Oleson and Dr. Robert Hohlfelder.Cores of Roman concrete were drilled in Portus Iulius harbor in Puteoli, and in Baia Locri Epizephyri (Calabria, Italy).
