3 Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold Preiu Floor Panel Engineered specifically for floor applications, Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold is a next generation preiu grade oriented strand board (OSB) panel. Copared to coodity OSB coonly used in sheathing applications, Edge Gold is anufactured with an enhanced forulation involving higher adhesive and wax content. As a result, Edge Gold preiu panels deliver outstanding diensional stability through wet weather construction periods, aking it an ideal specification for flooring. Weyerhaeuser is an industry leader in panel technology and has successfully developed proprietary grades of OSB for TJI Joists as web-stock and Edge Gold as floor panels. Floor panels and vertical webs of TJI Joists are often faced with the sae challenges. Both need to be diensionally stable throughout the construction period, and ultiately deliver structural perforance. The enhanced forulation of Edge Gold provides the solution for diensionally stable structural floor panels. Designing as a Syste with Vibration Control Floor Design Maxiu joist span is often governed by code andated floor vibration criteria. One way to efficiently itigate floor vibration is through the specification of thicker Edge Gold floor panels (versus using heavier, deeper floor joists). Through the use of thicker floor panels to control floor vibration, floor joists can often span greater distances, while still eeting code requireents. The Joist Span Coparison chart illustrates the effect that floor panel thickness has on allowable TJI Joists spans. These savings have not been reflected in the table above. (2) Pricing shown is for coparative purposes only, and is based on historical pricing trends for panel products. Contact your local Weyerhaeuser representative for final pricing. As illustrated in the Floor Assebly Cost Coparison table, in any cases thicker Edge Gold can reduce the cost of the floor syste by allowing the selection of floor joists in a lighter series, shallower depths, and/or wider on-centre spacing. Note: Historically, the arket price of 23/32" Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold TM is at an advantage relative to 5/8" plywood. Page 4 of 17

5 Trus Joist TJ-Pro Rating Syste The Trus Joist TJ-Pro Rating Syste is a proprietary rating syste that predicts floor perforance and assigns a rating based on client satisfaction. The ethodology is based on extensive full-scale laboratory testing and ore than one illion installations. By using the TJ-Pro Rating Syste, you can specify a floor syste that will eet the perforance desired by your clients, and not just the code iniu. Driven by your specification, designers using proprietary Weyerhaeuser design software such as Javelin or Forte can design a floor syste that will deliver the TJ-Pro rating level you have selected. Because the software considers the any factors affecting floor perforance, even taking into account the perceptions of the hoeowner, the TJ-Pro Rating Syste provides a uch better predictor of floor perforance. The TJ-Pro rating values relative to custoer satisfaction are provided in the TJ- Pro Rating Description table. TJ-PRO RATING DESCRIPTION TJ-Pro Rating Occupants who rate the floor "Good" to "Excellent" 25 28% 35 63% 45 84% 55 96% 65 99% Factors that affect floor perforance include: TJI Joist series, depth, and spacing Deck thickness and quality Directly applied ceilings Location of floor partitions Blocking Bearing conditions for the TJI Joists Specification exaple of applying a iniu TJ-Pro Rating is provided on page 16. 6 Floor Panel Deflection and Curvature When designing a floor syste, close attention is typically ade to verify that the deflection of the floor joists satisfies code requireents. However, when considering the specification for the finished flooring aterials, consideration should also be given to the deflection of the sub-floor panel between joists. For exaple, Terrazzo, Tile & Marble Association of Canada (TTMAC) specifies a axiu deflection between panels of L/360 to control tile daage during service. Specification of thicker Edge Gold floor panel will result in less panel deflection and therefore a larger radius of curvature of the floor panel between joists, even when floor joists are designed at greater on-centre spacing. The result of specifying thicker Edge Gold is a flatter floor syste, which results in less flex of the finished flooring aterial as well as a ore econoical floor syste with fewer TJI Joists. The following diagra illustrates this effect on two floor systes, both featuring TJI Joists. The floor syste on the left uses ⅞" Edge Gold floor panels with TJI joists spaced at 24" on-centre while the floor syste on the right uses ⅝" Douglas fir plywood sub-floor with TJI Joists at 16" on-centre. The ⅝" Douglas fir plywood sub-floor illustrated on the right results in a uch shorter radius of curvature and therefore a less flat floor. Long Radius of Curvature Short Radius of Curvature The floor panel syste with a short radius of curvature results in a uch sharper curve, therefore, a floor finish will be required to flex ore than a syste with a large radius of curvature. 10 Available Products Technical Data Weyerhaeuser Edge and Edge Gold eet requireents in CSA O325, which is recognized by the National Building Code of Canada and accepted by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Panels are available in the following thicknesses: Weyerhaeuser Edge 19/32", 23/32", 7/8", 1 1/8" Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold 5/8", 23/32", 7/8", 1 1/8" Soe sizes ay not be available in your region. Fire and Sound Perforance The 2005 National Building Code lists OSB and plywood floor panels together in the fire and sound asseblies contained in Table A B. Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold confors to CAN/CSA and is an approved subfloor aterial in the sound and fire asseblies for Weyerhaeuser products listed by Intertek Testing Services. Intertek provides fire and sound listings that are based on and supported by proprietary test reports. For ore inforation on the fire perforance of Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold and Weyerhaeuser products, refer to the Fire Rated Asseblies and Sprinkler Systes at Other References: Intertek Testing Services Canadian Wood Council International Code Council National Fire Protection Association Residential Fire Safety Institute (RFSI) Foraldehyde and Adhesive Data No urea foraldehyde resins are used in the anufacture of any Weyerhaeuser products, including Edge Gold floor panels. When tested in accordance with the ASTM E1333 large chaber test, foraldehyde eissions fro Weyerhaeuser products (including Edge Gold ) were under 0.10 pp, which is below even the ost stringent regulatory requireents. In any cases, eissions were so low that they could not be distinguished fro the background level of foraldehyde in the fresh air used during the testing. 11 Bond Durability Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold TM Response to Moisture Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold carries the Exposure 1 bond classification. All products that eet Exposure 1 rating are designed and suitable for applications where construction delays and therefore exposure to outside eleents ay be expected prior to full enclosure protection. All Exposure 1 rated products (including all plywood and OSB panels) should be properly stored and protected prior to installation. Refer to anufacturer recoendations for further details on proper storage and handling. Strength Properties APA Technical Topics docuent TT-052 testing has shown that the overall strength properties of OSB will not be affected by exposure conditions associated with typical construction delays. All Exposure 1 rated products (including all plywood and OSB panels) when exposed to repeated wetting or high oisture environents ay deteriorate or lose strength. For this reason, protection fro these conditions ust be provided. Moisture Absorption and Drying Weyerhaeuser Edge and Edge Gold will both absorb and release oisture slower than coon plywood. If Edge Gold panels becoe wet during construction, the drying rate difference between Edge Gold and plywood is not significant in a typical residential or coercial project given the available tie between full enclosure and placeent of any finished flooring. Moisture content recoendations of the floor panel ade by the finished flooring anufacturer should always be followed. Nail Values and Moisture The National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association (NOFMA) coissioned testing at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute to deterine the best fastening syste for nail-down hardwood floors on subfloors under realistic construction site conditions. In the test results, it is cited, After 2-1/2 years of siulated oisture cycles, 5/8" and 3/4" plywood and 23/32" OSB subfloors were coparable in nail holding power. Industry testing (*) has also been conducted on nail withdrawal properties of plywood and OSB to investigate the effect of various oisture exposure conditions. These tests show that OSB and plywood panels taken through a wet-dry cycle display siilar nail withdrawal perforance. In soe cases the, nail withdrawal values actually increased for OSB. (*) Nail Withdrawal and Pull-Through Strength of Structural-Use Panels, APA B Herzog, Borjen Yeh Moisture and Mold Weyerhaeuser provides extensive inforation related to this topic at See our Frequently Asked Questions About Mold (#1504) resource sheet at Edge-Swell Perforance In addition to the superior diensional stability characteristics that are a result of its enhanced coposition, Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold has added protection against edge swell throughout the construction phase with an edge seal treatent and is backed by Weyerhaeuser s liited 50-year structural warranty and 200-day no sand guarantee. 12 Hardwood Flooring Finished Flooring The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has becoe the leading organization for wood flooring certification and the predoinant source for proper installation of wood flooring. The NWFA Installation Guidelines provide inforation on proper accliation, subfloor guidelines and specifications, and installation guidelines. The NWFA has approved Weyerhaeuser Edge and Edge Gold floor panels in a iniu thickness of 23 /32" for use under hardwood floors in Truss/joist systes spaced under 19.2" o.c. Although 23 /32" OSB is span-rated for floor systes spaced at 24" on-center, NWFA believes a thicker subfloor is necessary to reduce deflection of the subfloor and iniize pops and squeaks in the wood flooring. Therefore, the NWFA recoendation is to use a ⅞" thick OSB panel for floor systes spaced at 24" on-center. NWFA Installation Guidelines, Chapter 4 Wood Subfloor Guidelines, Part IV Panel Products Subflooring, Section E Acceptable Panel Subfloors provides iniu acceptable thicknesses of panel subflooring, depending on the spacing of the floor joists. Quoting Ite 3: Edge Gold Code Conforance and Availability Edge Gold floor panels are anufactured in accordance with US Voluntary Product Standard PS2 and CAN/CSA-O325 with an Exposure 1 bond classification. ⅞" Edge Gold floor panels are available through Weyerhaeuser Wood Product Dealers and Independent Distributors. Installers of hardwood flooring should always refer to the floor preparation and installation guidelines provided by their associations and flooring anufacturer. Ceraic Tile Weyerhaeuser Edge and Edge Gold floor panels in a iniu thickness of 23/32" are suitable as the subfloor aterial in floor asseblies with a ceraic tile finish whenever a double layer floor syste (consisting of a subfloor with an underlayent layer) is specified. The figure below shows the coponents typically found in a wood floor ceraic tile application, according to the Tile Installation Manual by TTMAC (The Tile Terrazzo and Marble Association of Canada).
