Why Focus on Leadership NOW? High number of presidential retirements. Those who retire will need to be replaced. Higher education as an enterprise is expanding. Increasing number of conflicting forces impinging on higher education: Financial Governance Advances in Information Technology Rapid pace of innovation

The Pathway Up
On the Pathway to the Presidency Follow-up study to The American College President First-ever attempt to describe characteristics of senior leaders other than presidents.
Research Questions What is the age profile of senior leaders directly below presidents? (Will the last person out please turn off the lights ) Are those in position to be the next generation of presidents more diverse than the current group?
Methods and Data Surveyed HR directors at 4,300 regionally accredited, degreegranting institutions. Used CUPA-HR position taxonomy and ACPS results to identify 35 positions on the pathway. Asked for information in HR databases. 850 institutions responded with info on about 9,700 positions (20% response rate). Response rate varied by institution type. Data weighted to reflect national distribution of institutions.

Putting it all in Perspective Sobering news slight decline in the racial/ethnic diversity of top leadership positions at America s colleges and universities. Many efforts, yet little progress. What must we do differently? Women continue to increase their representation within the ranks of college and university presidents, but at a slow rate. How can we accelerate the pace of change? How can presidents help?
Putting it all in Perspective The high number of projected presidential retirements may present a challenge or even a perceived temporary shortage of leadership. But it also presents an opportunity to diversify the leadership of higher education. Need for institutions to focus intentionally on succession planning. The role of the president in identifying, developing, and supporting leadership talent.
ACE Leadership Focuses on programs, research, and resources for presidents and CAOs. Focuses on programs and resources for rising administrators (dept. chairs and above. Helps foster greater diversity and inclusion in leadership ranks. Focuses on programs and research that assist senior leaders in improving institutional capacity and effectiveness.
