1 Muistio 1 (7) BIM Awards notes Creating Flythrough flights Preparations User can create flight routes inside the model using Tekla Structures extension named Flythrough. Currently this can be found from the Tekla Extranet Extensions -tab using search word flythrough. Install the extension following the instructions coming with the extension. Open Tekla Structures and find the helicopter icon.

2 Muistio 2 (7) If needed, you can go to tools customize... and find the icon from there by typing flythrough to filter window and add it to your UserToolbar.

3 Muistio 3 (7) Usage Once you have the icon there on your toolbars note the following aspects: MANDATORY: 1. Read the instructions of the extension. They can be found from the extension download page. It explains the user interface. 2. Change the model view to perspective (extension works only in this mode)

4 Muistio 4 (7) OPTIONAL: Depending on your computer s memory and graphic card flying in the model can be really heavy task for your computer. To make it smoother try the following: (From View properties Display) Mainly parts are those that want to be shown so hide everything else. You can try showing reinforcing bars and bolts, but that can easily make model too heavy for smooth flying. You can try showing the Reference objects but especially architectural models usually are not showing nicely when the walls are exactly on top of your own modeled walls. Hide the grid. Go to advanced options (tools options advanced options) or (ctrl +e), in model view section. change XS_HIDE_WORKAREA to FALSE and redraw view. In advanced options, speed and accuracy section, test XS_SOLID_BUFFER_SIZE (see program help for details) In advanced options, speed and accuracy section, test XS_CHORD_TOLERANCE_FOR_TUBE_SEGMENTS default is 1.0. This makes the tubular sections a bit more segmented. In advanced options, speed and accuracy section, test XS_CHORD_TOLERANCE_FOR_SMALL_TUBE_SEGMENTS It is recommended to create several shorter flight routes instead of one long one. Usually flights outside the model are heavier then inside. When you are flying without the rebars and/or bolts you still want to show all those nice details you have there. Make the flight route and at certain position, where the flight stops, take a snapshot showing the rebars. This way, when creating an actual video, flight is smoother and details are shown at certain places. It doesn t matter what is shown in the model when you create the flight route (= plan the positions), but when you fly it.

5 Muistio 5 (7) Known limitations At the moment or writing (May 2013), the extension doesn t have undo or remove position button. But, the flight route is saved to a.ftf-file and, you can open this file with any text editor. If needed, you can remove any position by removing lines (example shown in the picture above) pointing to a certain location. <PerspectiveCamera> lines to remove </PerspectiveCamera> Remove also <PerspectiveCamera> and </PerspectiveCamera> -lines!

6 Muistio 6 (7) Of course, you do need to count what lines (what position) you need to remove. After editing the.ftf file, just reopen the file in the extension and it will fly from previous position to next one. NOTE! By removing lines incorrectly from.ftf-file, will cause extension to crash. Extension saves the files to and opens the folder from the location where it was last used. Not from the current model folder. So make sure you are using the correct.ftf-files. These files can be used in any model as they are not linked to a certain model.

7 Muistio 7 (7) Other tips and tricks when using video editing software (e.g. Camtasia Studio) 1. How to turn a slow and lagging flythrough into fast and smoother fly? If a model is large, highly detailed and you re computer graphics and RAM performance is low, then it results a slow and lagging flythrough. Especially if you wish to fly through a model and show all the details, like rebars, LVI references etc in a transparency mode. If you don t want to buy an extra 16 GB RAM and new card, then a good solution is the following: a. Record the screen no matter how slow is the flythrough, for example if you wish to make a 1 minute video, then your lagging screen recording can be easily up to 3-5 minutes. b. Now open the recording in Camtasia Studio. Probably the recordings frame rate lag varies; differences can be seen when flying inside or outside, no detail or high detail. So you might want to split the recording into similar frame rate lag. c. Splitting is easy, just place the marker where you want to split, right-click and split. d. Now you can start playing around with the clip speed. The part of the recording which you have just split into a similar frame rate lag, can be made up to 10x faster. Pick edit > clip speed > 0 990% e. That means if your initial screen recording was 5 minutes, it can be easily reduced to nice and smooth 1 minute fly
