4 Stavanger Domkirke Jernaldergarden Gamle Stavanger City sightseeing In 1125, work began on Stavanger Cathedral and in the same year Stavanger was officially recognized as a city. Its growth was slow and by 1800 there were still only inhabitants. By 1900 however, this number had increased to , due to the thriving fishing and shipping industries. Before the Second World War, production of tinned sardines was the towns most important industry. The post-war years proved difficult until the 1960 s when Stavanger became the oil capital of Norway. Today, after 30 years of economic growth, it has developed into a modern and prosperous town. The excellent economy has allowed us to preserve the special architecture and individuality. The result is a pleasant blend of new and old, -a large but friendly provincial town with around one hundred thousand inhabitants. Cruise ships docks right in the centre of town. From the pier the coaches drive through the harbour area with its quaint fish and farmers market. On the way to Ullandhaug the coaches pass Hafrsfjord where a historical sea battle was fought in the age of the Vikings, years ago. A visit and a guided tour of Jernaldergarden, the reconstructed farmstead from the Iron Age is recommended. These longhouses have been reconstructed on the original sites, with the same building materials and techniques used by our forefathers years ago. On the way back to the centre we pass the Ledaal manor, which is now used as a residence for royalty when visiting Stavanger. A visit to Stavanger Domkirke will also be made. The Cathedral, built of stone in the 12th and 13th century, is one of the few churches in Scandinavia that has kept its original design. The tour terminates with a walk through Gamle Stavanger, the old part of Stavanger, -Europe s best-preserved wooden house settlement, consisting of more than 170 houses. The houses were built at the end of the 17th and early 18th century and are now protected by a special preservation law and form quite a charming area. Following a new period of decline beginning in 1907, most of the walls were torn down on the orders of the occupying German forces.
