Work safely or don t work at all When a vehicle sheds its load, the consequences can be disastrous. People may be hit. And the financial loss for the owner can be huge. Safety on the road begins with choosing the right mode of transport. When a load has to be moved, the vehicle selected must be suitable to carry it. And the load itself needs to be properly secured to prevent any problems on the journey, especially when making an emergency stop, climbing steep hills or taking sharp turns. In that kind of situation, forces many times greater than those experienced in normal driving conditions may come into play. Although most loads are transported by lorry, the rules described in this brochure also apply to vans and cars. Indeed, particular care needs to be taken when goods are carried in a passenger compartment. The NAM [50% Shell/50% Exxon/Mobil) participates in an industrial cooperation agreement between European Shell exploration and production companies in a number of European countries. The NAM functions within this as the centre for natural gas operations, especially in land-based activities. Safety is the number one priority in all activities. 2
ON LORRIES General Any load carried by or for NAM must comply with all applicable local regulations. These describe how it should be secured and covered, and also special situations such as the marking of projecting loads and the transport of hazardous substances. Securing a load: step-by-step guide Securing your load = absorbing forces Starting point: the weight of the load (waybill, weight marker, weighbridge). 0.5 G (50%) 0.2 G (20%) 0.5 G (50%) 0.8 G (80%) 0.5 G (50%) 1.0 G (100%) 3
Choose the right vehicle The transport planner must... Check the condition of the vehicle: maintenance, damage, wear and tear, etc. Check its maximum load Check the surface area of the lorry platform Check the vehicle s load distribution plan Check how the load should be secured Optimum load distribution The driver must... Follow the load distribution plan Never exceed the maximum axle load Never exceed the maximum gross load Driver s checklist Is the load stable? If not, additional restraint is required Is the lorry platform wet or greasy? If so, additional restraint is required If the load is lashed down, are the straps vertical or near vertical? If not, additional restraint is required Are all the restraints in good condition? If not, replace them Are all the restraints tight? (Check them!) If not, tighten them 4
Methods of securing a load Containment: the load completely fills the vehicle body. Headboard, side and rear boards, special construction Fixing: the load is held in place by supports fixed to the vehicle. Stanchions, shoring beams, wedges Direct restraint: the load is secured to the vehicle body. Twist locks, straps, chains, cables Lashing: creates extra friction between the load and the lorry platform. Straps, chains, cables, anti-slip mats In many cases, a combination of methods is used. Methods to be used for NAM loads Containers/baskets Containment Fixing Direct restraint Lashing Load against headboard (NB. do not exceed the maximum axle load!) Stanchions Twist locks At least two straps per container/basket 5
Pipes Containment Always load against, but never higher than, the headboard (NB. do not exceed the maximum axle load!) Fixing Wedges with an angle of 39 Stanchions/stanchion mounts for lateral restraint Lashing Use anti-slip mats on wooden shoring beams. Use straps adjacent to only shoring beams (NB. beware of the pipes distorting) Pallets Containment Fixing Lashing Headboard and/or side and rear boards Stanchions Secure each pallet individually, using straps Equipment Containment Fixing Direct restraint Lashing As far as possible, shaped to match the load Stanchions Straps, chains, cables Straps, chains, cables. Do not run straps over sharp edges (NB. beware of damage to straps) 6
Other important points Covering loads Loose loads like sand, gravel and waste, in particular, should be covered with tarpaulin or netting. Note that a tarpaulin or netting provides some protection, but is not a means of securing a load! Projecting loads As a rule, loads which project out of the vehicle must not be carried. When exceptions to this rule are authorized, the projecting load must be clearly marked. For long loads which cannot be divided, use extendable trailers. Hazardous loads Special rules apply! If you have any questions or require more information, a comprehensive Driver s Guide to Securing Loads is available from NAM. Ask your manager, the HSE Department or the Logistics Department for a copy. 7
