1 TRAVELLITE MEDIA READER Designed as a High Speed 2.0 USB device, this SD/ MMC Card Reader gives you the ability to simply remove your MMC or SD media from your phone, handheld or digital camera and insert it directly into the card reader for immediate file access. The TravelLite media reader also allows you to write data to the media for file sharing and/ or data transfer. These instructions will guide you through the installation of the TravelLite media reader. This text will also summarize the use of the card reader in Windows and Mac based computers. 1

3 INSERTING THE SD/ MMC MEDIA Open the media door. Insert the MMC or SD card into the TravelLite. Continue to push the media into the reader until you hear a click; the media is now inserted. Close the media door for protection (Figure 1). In order to remove the media, open the media door and push the card until you hear a click, yet again. The media will then release and partially eject. 4 WINDOWS Installation and Operation Note for the Windows 98SE users: Completely install the Win98SE driver and reboot the computer prior to inserting the TravelLite media reader into a USB port. Locate the USB ports on the back of the computer. Plug the reader into a free USB port. Figure 2 The driver will install and the computer will complete the installation of the TravelLite card reader. A Found New Hardware dialog box will appear at the bottom of the screen indicating the installation is complete (Figure 3). Figure 3 If you have plugged this unit into a 1.1 USB port, a non-hi-speed USB message will appear (Figure 4). Though you will not be able to take advantage of the High Speed 2.0 performance, the device will still function as usual. Figure 4 TRAVELLITE CARD READER ver

5 The SD/ MMC Card Reader will display in My Computer and/ or Explorer as a Removable Disk (Figure 5). Transferring files to and from the TravelLite media reader is a simple drag and drop operation. Figure 5 Once an SD or MMC card is inserted into the drive, a window will autorun and display the contents of the media. If this window does not autorun, locate the Removable Disk icon in My Computer or Explorer, and double-click on the drive to display the contents of the MMC or SD media. 6 Safely removing the reader In order to safely remove the TravelLite media reader, double-click on the USB card icon located in the System Tray (Figure 7). Figure 7 The Safely Remove Hardware dialog box will display. Select USB Mass Storage Device and click Stop. Highlight the device that you would like to safely remove and click OK 1 (Figure 8). 7 MAC Installation and Operation Note for Mac users: In order to insert the TravelLite media reader into a USB port, you may need to use a USB extension cable. Make sure the media is properly inserted into the reader prior to plugging the reader into a USB port. Locate the USB ports on the back of the computer. (Do not use the USB port on the keyboard since this port may not have enough power to support the High Speed 2.0 media reader). Plug the MMC/ SD Card Reader into a free USB port. Important Note: If an SD/ MMC media is not inserted into the TravelLite media reader prior to plugging it into a USB port, the Mac desktop will not display the drive for access. Figure 10 After the TravelLite media reader is inserted into the USB port, the driver will install and the icon will display on the Mac desktop as NO-NAME (Figure 11). 8 Note: NO_NAME can be changed to a moniker of your preference. Warning: In order to change the NO_NAME caption, you will be required to erase the MMC/ SD media. All of the data on the media will be lost. Please be sure to backup any important data prior to erasing your media. Important Note: The modification to NO_NAME will only apply to the media that you erase. Once you insert a new SD/ MMC media into the TravelLite media reader, it will also default to NO_NAME. In order to set a new user-defined moniker, follow the instructions below. Mac OS 9.X Highlight the NO_NAME drive and click Special, then select Erase Disk. Once the Erase Disk dialog box appears, type your preferred title in the Name field and click Erase. Your moniker will now be set. Figure 12 Mac OS 10.X Click Go>Applications>Utilities then Disk Utility. Once you get to the Disk Utility dialog box, select the Erase tab. Now select the Generic drive and type your preferred title in the Name field 2. Click Erase at the bottom of the screen (Figure 13). Your moniker will now be set. 9 Safely removing the reader In order to safely remove the TravelLite media reader, drag the reader icon to the Trash. You can now safely eject the media and/ or unplug the TravelLite media reader Figure 14 TRAVELLITE CARD READER ver

10 FAQS FAQs are frequently asked questions which may arise during the installation or operation of a device. Below we have posted several FAQs for quick review. If your questions are not posted below, please check Kingston s website at for additional support. Q: Where can I get the TravelLite Windows 98 driver? A: You can locate and download the TravelLite Windows 98 driver through our Kingston download page at Q: If I have a Mini SD or Reduced Size MMC card, will they work with the TravelLite media reader? A: Yes, since these cards are backwards compatible to the standard SD and MMC Host devices, they will also work with the TravelLite media reader as long as you have the appropriate SD/ MMC adapter. Q: Since I changed the NO_NAME title to a user-defined moniker, while using a Mac computer, my camera or PC will no longer recognize the media. How can I correct this? A: In order to resolve, you will need to follow the steps illustrated in Figure 13. In addition, you will need to make sure and select the MS-DOS File System Volume Format. This will allow you to use the media with the Mac and standard FAT (File Allocation Table) based devices, such as digital cameras and PCs. Q: If the TravelLite media reader is too big to fit in my USB port, what should I do? A: Some computers may be limited to a small amount of space in the immediate USB port area. In order to insert the TravelLite media reader into a USB port, you may need to use a USB extension cable. Q: I plugged the TravelLite media reader directly into one of the main USB ports on the back of my PC as directed, but the drive is still not recognized. What could be the problem? A: Some PCs come with four (4) plus USB ports on the back of the tower. We recommend that you use USB ports 1 and 2, since the other ports may not have enough power to support the High Speed 2.0 TravelLite media reader. Q: Will the TravelLite media reader work with Windows 95 or Windows NT? A: No. Though your computer may have USB ports, these Windows Operating Systems do not have USB support. Unfortunately Kingston cannot create a driver that will allow these Operating Systems to support USB devices. Q: A: Q: A: TRAVELLITE CARD READER ver
