1 Adjusting Convergence Instruction Sheet INTRODUCTION WARNING Only qualified service technicians should attempt convergence adjustments. Best results come with experience and patience. These instructions explain how to adjust convergence in the SXGA+ and HD projectors, listed below, using the Christie Convergence Tool Kit. For more information, refer to Using the Christie Convergence Tool Kit Instruction Sheet. 2 KITS REQUIRED Convergence Tool Kit Adjustable torque limiting driver/angled driver 2.5mm coated ball-point hex bits 1.5mm coated ball-point hex drivers Loosening handle hex ball driver TOOLS REQUIRED #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove projector lid, panels, etc. BEFORE YOU BEGIN BORE-SIGHT: Adjust bore-sight, as described in the Bore-sight Alignment Procedure ( ). Ensure the image is centered in the lens. KNOW YOUR REFERENCE COLOR: For all of the projectors listed in 1, align blue and/or green to red. Do not adjust red. USE A PROPER TEST PATTERN: For best results, use a grid-type test pattern. ANALYZE CONVERGENCE: If convergence is off by less than two pixels, use the standard convergence adjustment screws to correct the problem. If convergence is off by two pixels or more, a Christie-trained service technician should adjust the plungers. Do not adjust plungers unless properly trained. CAUTION Convergence adjustment must be performed by a qualified service technician. WARNING Observe all electro-static discharge (ESD) precautions. 3 INTRUCTIONS ADJUSTING CONVERGENCE LIGHT ENGINE ACCESS: DS+/DW/HD/S+/W/MATRIX 4000/DLV MODELS (EXCEPT MIRAGE S+14K AND ROADSTER) NOTE: For more information, refer to the DS/HD/DW/DLV/Matrix & Mirage Service Manual ( xx). 1. Remove the projection lens. For more information, refer to the Projection Lens Procedure, outlined in the Service Manual (see above). 2. Remove any optional input modules installed in Input 5 and Input 6 by removing the two screws from the module faceplate and pulling the module out of the projector. 3. Remove the three screws securing the left-side filter door. Refer to the bottom-right image in Figure Remove the filter. 5. Remove the 19 screws securing the top cover. Refer to the top two images and the bottom-left image in Figure 1. Figure 1 6. Slowly lift the top cover straight up and remove. NOTE: The front IR sensor PCB, located in the frontleft corner can be damaged if it is hit while removing the cover. Refer to Figure With the top cover removed, the protective shields positioned over the electronic PCBs and the light engine can be seen. 4 LIGHT ENGINE ACCESS: MIRAGE S+14K AND ALL ROADSTER MODELS NOTE: The skins (Figure 3), the internal cooling duct and the iris cap (Figure 4) must also be removed in order to access the light engine. Figure 3 Figure 4 ADJUSTMENT: LOCK-DOWN SCREWS 8. For each color that requires alignment (green and/or blue), use a 2.5mm torque driver to loosen all four lock-down screws. Refer to Figure 5. Carefully, refigure 5 tighten each lock-down screw until the screw just begins to lock. This slight engagement ensures ease-of-alignment so adjustments can be made with smooth precision and without the image jumping. 4 of 6 Adjusting Convergence Instruction Sheet

5 9. Adjust the green and/or blue digital micro-mirror device, as necessary. For either color, there are three set screws used for adjustments. Refer to Figure 6. Use the 1.5mm coated drivers provided with the kit. DO NOT touch adjacent plungers. Note the difference between turning B and C in the same direction, versus the opposite direction. IMPORTANT: Always turn screws B and C at the same time. DO NOT touch the plungers adjacent to the screws. Figure Once convergence is satisfactory, carefully secure the four lock-down screws using small increments and the tightening sequence, as illustrated in Figure 7. Large or sudden torque may cause the color to shift. 11. For the final increment use a torque driver to apply 8 in-lbf. torque. 12. To reassemble the projector, follow Steps 1-7 in reverse order. Figure 7 PLUNGERS IMPORTANT: ONLY USE THE PLUNGERS IF THE ABOVE PROCEDURE FAILS! Do not use the plungers unless you have been properly trained. Improper plunger adjustment can cause severe convergence problems that can only be corrected by re-flying the light engine at the factory. If a projector is misconverged by two or more pixels, or if good convergence is not obtained using the adjustment screws, one or two of the spring-loaded plungers may need to be adjusted. Refer to Figure 8. Plunger functions: Resetting: Plungers can be repositioned to improve the performance and range of the convergence adjustment screws. This reset is recommended if opposing turns of an adjustment screw does not cause the expected opposite movements in the image. For instance, if turning screw A in one direction raises the pixels diagonally, but turning it in the opposite direction does not lower the pixels back down again, the adjacent plunger likely needs resetting. 6 Plunger Convergence Adjustment: Plungers can be used in conjunction with the adjustment screws to modify convergence in severe cases. Generally, this is recommended only if resetting the plungers does not adequately improve the performance of the convergence adjustment screws. RESETTING THE PLUNGERS 1. Secure all lock-down screws (8 in-lbf. torque). 2. Loosen the convergence adjustment screws for the two adjustable colors. 3. For each of these colors, turn the adjacent plunger until it bottoms out against the light engine bracket. 4. Turn the plunger back no more than ¼ ½ turn. 5. Loosen the lock-down screws (convergence will drift), and converge as usual using the adjustment screws. Ensure the lock-down screws are properly tightened when done. PLUNGER CONVERGENCE ADJUSTMENT If resetting the plungers still does not adequately improve success using the convergence adjustment screws, adjust the plungers themselves in conjunction with the adjustment screws. 1. Loosen the lock-down screws. 2. Carefully turn the plunger and the adjacent adjustment screw together, but in opposite directions until convergence is correct.
