2 Why is EMAC necessary? Reducing cost of ownership A large sized data centre consumes similar amounts of power to an average sized town. As a consequence, they generate more heat output and often suffer from inadequate cooling. Add to this, the escalating cost of energy, and the requirement for management information and control becomes evermore critical. EMAC devices are designed to help to fill this gap. Benefits of EMAC EMAC provides: Capacity planning for existing & future needs Monitoring, measuring & reporting of power usage of multiple clients Billing stream capability for hosted clients Alerts when hosted clients exceed their power allowance Prevention of unauthorised use of power outlets / equipment deployment System load management (phase balancing, capacity planning etc) Recovery of unresponsive servers via remote controlled power cycling Alarming & trending of system, rack, powerstrip and outlet level load conditions Well defined insertion loss specifications

3 What is EMAC? An EMAC solution may include some or all of the following devices depending on the requirements: Power Management Intelligent PDUs allow monitoring of power consumption down to the level of an individual socket. Individually controlled sockets can be turned on or off remotely to facilitate security (unused sockets off) and remote hard reset of unresponsive equipment. Temperature Sensing Provides a feedback loop with alerts warning that temperature is approaching a control limit. Provides evidence, independent of the cooling system that environmental service level agreements (SLAs) are being met. Humidity Sensing Correct humidity is important to maintain. If levels are too high short circuits and corrosion can occur whilst if levels are too low there is a danger of Electrostatic discharge. Guidelines are recommended by TIA and ASHREA* *American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers Access Control Controlling personnel access to servers and the network safeguards company data, protects installation of rogue software, and protects against malicious attack. Company policy can be applied to determine who has access to what, where, and when. These devices are connected via a Rack Manager which controls the PDUs and receives information from sensors. It then forwards information either in response to a SNMP request or as an alert.

5 Reporting A variety of user configurable reports are available providing trended historical or instantaneous information on: Temperature Humidity Power consumption Temperature for a set of cabinets Information can be reported by individual device, location, or grouped. User configurable alerts on: Unauthorised change of status i.e door open Change of measured data versus limits i.e Rack 5 current draw exceeds 5A Warning of measured data approaching a limit i.e Temperature = 17.8 degrees

6 Integration with LANsense software Complete integration with LANsense Enterprise or Data Centre Editions are possible, providing alerts and trended information and also the ability to interact with data in real time using user definable dashboards. Additional graphical dashboard information is possible within LANsense screens. In this example cabinet temperatures are displayed compared with defined limits. Information can be presented in LANsense relative to the location of the device so that lock status for a cabinet appears in the cabinet for example. Control of EMAC products within LANsense is via right click context menus. Door status indication Green = Locked
