3 Introduction Asure ID is capable of accepting input from several different data sources, such as a camera, a scanner, or files on the hard drive. One such source is the Crossmatch fingerprint scanner (under various model names). Because Asure ID will treat the images captured from the scanner as another photo-type input, getting the scanner to work with Asure ID involves some additional steps. The purpose of this Tech Note is to help explain those steps to users. 3

4 Installing the Scanner Note: These instructions should work with any USB-based fingerprint scanner, but is indented to apply specifically to the Crossmatch scanner. Since the fingerprint scanner is a USB device, the first thing to do is to install the software drivers. Please insure that you have the latest version of the drivers, as earlier versions may cause problems. Download the drivers from: Select the driver appropriate to the scanner you are using. The driver is part of the SDK (Software Development Kit) for your scanner. After you have installed the software, plug the scanner into the USB bus. The device should be recognized by Windows, and installed to your system. If you have problems installing your hardware, please attempt to contact Crossmatch first for technical support. Oak Tree can provide technical support, but our exposure to this hardware is limited, and Crossmatch should be able to provide more appropriate support. 4

5 Working with Asure ID Asure ID has the limitation of being able to work with just one TWAIN source at a time. Since the camera is the default TWAIN source, that means that unless you change sources, the camera image will be captured to all TWAIN-sourced data fields, including the fingerprint field. If you find that the photo is getting inserted everywhere, this is the problem. When designing a card, keep in mind that the fingerprint will be treated as just another photo input field by the software. Therefore, you will have to create a Photo2 field to hold the fingerprint image on the card. Asure ID does not have a dedicated data field structure for the fingerprint. Once the card is designed and you are working in the Data Entry Center to get the data into the card, the process is a little different. For the normal photograph, go ahead and capture the image as you would normally, by double clicking on the block labeled Photo 1. Note the small, drop-down arrow to the left of the Photo 1. Clicking on this arrow will switch you to the Photo 2 data block. Before you can acquire the scanner image, you need to select the different TWAIN source. You do that by going to the menu item Image>Select TWAIN Source. something like this: CMT USB Scanner Twain Source A small selector box will then pop up, with a list of available TWAIN sources. The fingerprint scanner should be listed 5

6 There should be another listing for the camera, and any other TWAIN devices you have installed. Select the scanner from the options listed. Now, right click on the Photo 2 data block. That will bring up the dialog box in the following screen shot: Select the last option, Acquire Photo from TWAIN source, and the fingerprint should be scanned into the card. Selecting a different TWAIN source resets the default source to the new selection, in this case, the fingerprint scanner. What that means is the next time you go to enter data into a card the scanner will still be the source available to all your photo fields. To get all the data into the card, you need to go through the process of changing the image source back to the camera, capture your photo, change the source to scanner, capture the fingerprint, and so on. Just remember that the TWAIN source is left as the last one selected. 6
