We knew we wanted to install solar at some point. During construction we had conduit installed from the attic to basement. This advanced planning made it much easier and less costly to install the PV system. MI did not have experience with building "solar ready" homes and it took a lot of time to research & educate the MI staff and sub contractors. 7 Putikka Residence (continued) Other Comments: The salesman from Astrum Solar gave us three options to pay for the solar system: buy the system, pay as you go lease, or an upfront lease. We chose the upfront lease. The cost of the upfront lease was comparable to purchasing the system and recovering the various incentives available at that time. The advantages of a lease are that Astrum is responsible for maintaining and insuring the system and we don t need to sell the SRECs produced by the system. The lease is transferrable if we sell the house and the lease also comes with yearly electric energy production guarantees from Astrum. If the system doesn t meet these yearly targets Astrum is required to compensate us for the missing energy. This hasn t been an issue so far as the first year production easily exceeded the guarantee. One other nice feature of leasing is that Astrum covered the cost of AEP s connection fee and any other permits in the lease price. Astrum also did all the work to make sure all the required permits were obtained. The homes feature varying sizes of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems with two homes charging electric Chevy Volts using their homes solar power. Together the five solar homes on the 2014 GEO Spring Tour off-set approximately 71,000 pounds of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of taking 6.8 vehicles off the road. They also avoid power plant use of 9,600 gallons of water annually. 7
