Today s Topic Rooftop Solar in Texas Right Place, Right Time! Plano Solar Advocates Non-profit grassroots volunteer group North Texas Renewable Energy Group Non-profit regional chapter of non-profit Texas Solar Energy Society File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 1

Clean Disruption Solar power represents the first of four clean disruptive technologies described in a recent 2014 book by Tony Seba The four disruptive technologies are: Solar power (PV) Energy storage Electric Vehicles (EVs) Autonomous (self-driving) cars Titled, "Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation: How Silicon Valley Will Make Oil, Nuclear, Natural Gas, Coal, Electric Utilities and Conventional Cars Obsolete by 2030". File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 2

Technology Disruption can happen quicker than you think About 13 years to go from horse carriages to ICE autos in early 1900 s ICE autos were cleaner! Especially faster than the predictions of industry (or incumbent industry) experts Example: ATT (the old one) commissioned study in 1985 to predict number of cell phones in use in the year Study predicted 900K. Actual 100M! Clean Disruption Anybody remember Kodak before and after digital cameras File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 3

Routes of Power: Energy and Modern America Check out Energy at the Movies, especially at the beginning for the review of energy transitions in a historical context Check out Routes of Power: Energy and Modern America, by Christopher F. Jones, which looks at advances in energy access--canals, pipelines, and wires that delivered power Path to scaling up clean energy technologies (like solar+storage and distributed generation) sometimes can seem like unchartered territory. Challenging to figure out the best strategies to develop large, mainstream markets for clean energy technologies. Good to know that we ve been on this path before, and that energy transitions of the past can provide some lessons for the future. So now the question is - not if, but when and how will the electric utilities business model change and evolve to collaborate with on-site solar PV (maybe the real energy efficiency killer app ) File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 4

Why Solar, Why Now? 1. Huge Potential Solar Resources 139 GW end of 2013 Global installed capacity keeps going up! The amount of energy that reaches the earth in one hour is equivalent to what the entire world consumes in one year! As volume increases, manufacturing learning curve drives improvements to lower costs Because the costs declined dramatically! File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 5

2. Rooftop Solar is not a science project anymore US installations 600,000+ (end 2014) Texas installations 10,000+ (end 2014) North Texas installations 2,100+ (end 2014) Plano installations (as area example) 175+ (4q2014) totaling an estimated 1,350 KW(dc) of capacity. Annual estimated production 1,890,000 kwh of electricity. Resulting in: Reduction of 1,309 tons of CO2 offsets the equivalent of 33,480 trees is equivalent to saving 153,000 gallons of gas saves an estimated 708,750 gallons of WATER File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 6

Key Benefits Rooftop Solar PV Benefits Abundant & local energy resource Local electricity generation means less energy waste Clean Energy electricity generation with no air, water, or noise pollution (and no water required to produce electricity) No moving parts low or NO maintenance And what else? Cost competitive for rooftop distributed generation Great consumer choice to generate some of your own electricity and hedge your long term electricity costs! Promotes distributed, private investment in clean energy sources File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 7

Electricity Generation & Consumption in Texas 340,033,353,000 kwh in 2014 Nuclear, 11.6% Wind, 10.6% Natural Gas, 41.1% Other (Hydro, Biomass, Solar, other),0.7% 33.3% Coal, 36.0% 28.6% 2014 Energy Fuel Types Renewables have grown, but a huge potential remains! 2014 MWh % incr Natural Gas 139,762,093 13% Coal 122,483,396 8% Nuclear 39,287,203-3% Wind 36,142, % Other 2,358,278 11% Total 340,033,353 20% Maybe 20%+ SOLAR! North Central Average Residential 16,220 kwh annual usage 10% higher than average of all other weather zones File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 8

Can Rooftop Solar really grow in Texas? California 250,000+ installations so far Hawaii state with largest per capita penetration of rooftop solar so far Australia similar electricity market design, similar population over 1 million rooftops installed over 4 year period currently at 1.4 million installations so far But not all existing homes are good candidates for rooftop solar installations some studies indicate maybe only 20-30%. Home orientation, roof layout, and roof obstructions can be reasons for some homes not being a good candidate. However, new homes don't have to have these potential blocking issues File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 9

Building a New Home? or know someone who is? Make sure your builder does one of these! Go Solar Ready 2015 International Residential Code Appendix U Include a solar PV installation Go Zero Energy Ready Go full Zero Energy Home combines high levels of energy efficiency with renewable energy systems to annually return as much energy to the utility as it takes from the utility resulting in a net-zero energy consumption for the home. File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 10

Market Design and Price Signals From Smart Power Generation, J. Klimstra, M. Otakainen, Fig 3.8: Weekly electricity supply pattern for Texas entations/2012/ercot_smartenergysumm it_ pdf Why the large swing in power usage during the day at different times of the year? Which market participants are seeing and reacting to market price signals? Opportunities for improvement in market design? File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 11

What if the sun doesn t shine? Guess what? We don t need as much electricity! File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 12

Energy Industry Transitions [From the Solar Foundation Job Census (2014)] In 2014, in the area I live, the census reported these numbers of solar industry jobs: 260, State Representative - Jeff Leach (District 67) 490, US Congressman - Sam Johnson (3rd District) 613, State Senator - Van Taylor (Senate District 8) File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 13

Rooftop Solar provides a local clean solution Rooftop Solar in Texas. Right Place, Right Time! It s in the Right Place Generates electricity locally, where it is consumed Reduces transmission losses At the Right Time Operates during peak demand daytime periods (high A/C load) Alternatively, central plants (wind, NG, etc.) and transmission lines are most efficient at night Texas has the largest potential for electricity generation from solar energy of any state in the country. 18 Solar PV Electric System Example - batteryless grid-tied Making a long term INVESTMENT in LOCALLY generated power Inverter could be central or micro File: Dallas Electric Club Reference: Slide 18

What size Solar PV system do I need? Size of solar PV (PhotoVoltaic) system determined by: Roof space, orientation (south facing/tilt angle), & shading Percentage of annual energy consumption homeowner wants to offset with on-site electricity generation from PV solar (also consider summer/winter highs/lows) Cost/Budget Note: Also need to understand what happens when excess AC power is sent back to the grid (often referred to as net-metering or buyback plans) File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 19

Five Cost Elements to Know Example for a 5.0 KW system (which in North Texas will produce approximately 7,000 kwh per year) Total Installed Cost ($3.40/Watt) $17,000 Utility Incentives (if available) - $5,000 (net $12,000) Federal Investment Tax Credit(30%) - $3,600 (30% of net) Final Net Cost $8,400 Equivalent Cost/kWh - Federal Investment Tax Credit (30% of net cost) due to expire at the end of 2016 $0.05/kWh File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 20

Financing Options Generally available options Purchase installed system take out a loan to purchase Solar panel system long term leasing options Power Purchase Agreement long term agreement to buy kwh Not all solar installation companies offer all options Regardless, the most important things to know How much electricity do you use on an annual basis The net $/Watt solar installed cost calculations and resulting $/kwh Then the purchase, borrow, or lease decision is a personal decision Just remember, financing and leasing companies are like any other company, they offer these product options to make money File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 21

Go Solar at Home Helping homeowners install Solar PV in North Texas! Plano Solar Advocates in collaboration with Live Green In Plano, launched a pilot project Go Solar at Home on February 15, 2015 Primary goal is to connect North Texas homeowners and small businesses thinking about or ready to install solar with local, vetted solar installers Modeled after the very successful Bring Solar Home campaign from the non-profit group in San Antonio, Solar San Antonio Visit solarizeplano.org and Enroll tab for latest program updates File: Dallas Electric Club Slide 22
