3 BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE Clinical Chemistry Module Code FBMS601 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: FHHS500 Applied Pathophysiology, FBMS520 Fundamentals of Disease Diagnosis, and FMAB500 Biochemistry The module aims to (i) integrate aspects of physiology, biochemistry and chemical analysis of clinical samples for understanding disease processes and discipline-based inter-relationships for their investigation, (ii) develop confidence in the use and appraisal of the scientific literature, (iii) enhance data-related skills and their application in unfamiliar contexts (iv) develop skills of autonomy and collaboration in organising and delivering a seminar as a vehicle for demonstrating critical analysis. (Laboratory based procedures for the investigation of selected organ systems using chemical biomarkers; clinical endocrinology; selected aspects of clinical biochemistry; proteins and the acute phase response; toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring. Biochemical pathways in health and disease. Sample analysis.) Assessment: Group Seminar Presentation (40%) and Examination (60%) Haematology & Transfusion Science Module Code FBMS603 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: FBMS520 Fundamentals of Disease Diagnosis and FHHS500 Applied Pathophysiology This module aims to integrate knowledge in and understanding of haematology and transfusion science into a critical awareness of the disease process and its investigation and treatment. (The aetiology and rationales for the investigation and treatment of the major haematological diseases, as illustrated by suitable examples of red cell, white cell and haemostatic disorders. The value and requirements of the therapeutic uses of blood.) Assessment: Essay (40%) and Examination (60%) Clinical Immunology Module Code FBMS602 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: FBMS521 Immunology and FBMS520 Fundamentals of Disease Investigation This module aims to build on the knowledge gained in FBMS521 Immunology and apply that knowledge clinically by relating the concepts and mechanisms of immunology to disease diagnosis and pathogenesis. (Normal immune responses to pathogens and the immunopathology of infectious diseases. Immune effector mechanisms to recognise and kill pathogens and parasites. Immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity and autoimmunity including investigation, diagnosis, pathology and treatment. Transplantation, rejection and immunosuppression. Manipulation of the immune response including vaccines and immunotherapy. Assessed poster. Practical assessed in exam.) Assessment: Poster / Diagnostic Study (40%) and Examination (60%) COMPUTER SCIENCE Programming Principles II Module Code 4COSC005W Level 4 Semester 2 UK Credit Value: 20 Equivalent Credit Value: ECTS Credits 10 * Pre-requisites: Programming Principles I The module aims to develop skills in the selection and implementation of problem-solving algorithms. It will consider analysis of algorithms in terms of soundness and completeness, and introduce more advanced programming methods including the implementation of classes and methods and more sophisticated data structures such as lists, queues and trees. Assessment: Practical Exercises (50%) ; Programming Assignment 2 (50%).
4 Mobile Application Development Module Code 5COSC005W Level 5 Semester 2 The Android mobile programming architecture. Restrictions of using small devices such as mobile phones tablets and wearables. Programming user interfaces, networking, persistent storage and multi-threading. Device profiling, application deployment and installation. Assessment: Coursework 1 (50%) ; Coursework 2 (50%). Usability Testing Module Code 5MMCS002W Level 5 Semester 2 The module provides students with essential skills and practice in a range of usability techniques, how to conduct usability studies and focuses on the role of the user within the design process. The importance of experimental design and statistical analysis is illustrated through real world examples. The ability to interpret and critically discuss results is stressed throughout. Assessment: Group Coursework (60%) ; Usability Testing (40%). Computer Systems Administration Module Code ECSE615 Level 6 Semester 2 The role and responsibilities of a computer systems administrator are reviewed, practical experience of server installation is gained, and the challenges facing the computer system designer are explored. To provide the knowledge and practical skills required to perform as a computer systems administrator and the concepts and design skills needed to propose and justify configuration choices to meet user system requirements. Assessment: In-Class Test (50%) and Examination (50%) Native Programming Module Code ECWM601 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: ECSC501 Object Oriented Programming I and ECSC502 Object Oriented Programming II or EICG505 Object Oriented Development and Management for Games This module gives the student the necessary knowledge and practical experience to develop native applications for mobile platforms. The module contains lectures on, assessment on when to choose native development over virtual machine, Objective C and C++ programming and coding standards, native development tools and techniques, programming patterns and platform building. The student shall also be able to make design decisions depending on system requirements about the use of native applications as opposed to virtual machine applications. The module shall also introduce students to concepts and practice of building up component based operating systems to meet a variety of system requirements. Assessment: Coursework 1 (40%) and Coursework 2 (60%) Real Time and Embedded Systems Module Code ECWM611 Level 6 Semester 2 The module covers the concepts of real-time systems and techniques used for their design and implementation. A practical application of the relevant concepts and techniques will be demonstrated and explored in the embedded system environment. Assessment: Coursework (30%), Lab-Based Practical (20%) and Examination (50%) Web Intelligence Module Code ECWM618 Level 6 Semester 2 The module provides the student with the necessary knowledge and practical experience in coping with information science and intelligent technologies on the Web. The module focusses on looking at the Web as an ecosystem of producers and consumers of data, information and knowledge to be shared and communicated. To this extent, the module provides the student with Web data and knowledge representation and description languages, as well as information retrieval, extraction and mining techniques, in order to use the Web as a reasonable information repository for scientific and business/industrial applications. Assessment: Coursework (50%) and Examination (50%)
5 Multimedia Streaming Module Code EECN605 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: EECN510 Network Software Engineering, and EECN600 Enterprise Network Engineering Multimedia streaming, both sound and video, is rapidly increasing its share of Internet traffic. This module covers the concepts underlying modern multimedia streaming and the practical techniques used to robustly deliver it in the presence of completing network traffic. Measurement and analysis of the effect of Quality of Service (QoS) policies on network traffic form the basis of laboratory work. Assessment: Individual Research Based Report (20%), Group Practical Assessment (30%) and Examination (50%) Real-Time and Embedded Systems Module Code EECT600 Level 6 Semester 2 This module covers the concepts of real-time systems and techniques used for their design and implementation. A practical application of the relevant concepts and techniques will be demonstrated and explored in the embedded system environment. Key words: real-time operating systems; scheduling; concurrent programming; inter-task communication. Assessment: Coursework (30%), Lab-Based Practical (20%) and Examination (50%) LIFE SCIENCES Yoga and Meditation Module Code 4HMDS001W Level 4 Semester 2 This experiential module aims to provide an introduction to the theoretical and conceptual framework for exploring the physical, mental, spiritual and social dimensions of yoga and meditation. Students are given the opportunity to personally experience the effects of yoga postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques. The principles underlying the safe practice of yoga and meditation are considered. For the duration of the module students will be expected to develop a yoga and meditation practice, as well as maintain a learning journal. The journal will enable the student to reflect on the experience of practising yoga and meditation. Assessment: Practical (50%) ; Reflective Summary (50%). Health and Exercise Practices Module Code 5HMNT003W Level 5 Semester 2 This module will examine the complexity of practices and behaviors in health and disease in all its diversity, including effects on society s health, well-being and economy. Understanding the nature of human choice related to health and exploring the role and responsibility of government promoting societal health outcomes. Students will also consider the possibilities of intervention strategies to improve behaviour-related health. Assessment: Coursework 1 (30%) ; Coursework 2 (10%) ; Exam (60%). Current Topics In Exercise Physiology Module Code FHHS603 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: FHHS506 Physiology of Exercise This module provides students with an introduction to the immediate and long-term physiological responses and health benefits to exercise. Key topical issues including environmental & stress physiology as it applies to exercise physiology will also be covered during the taught lecturer, seminars and laboratory sessions. Topics relating to current published research in areas of applied physiology will also be covered during this module. The emphasis will be on the assessment of health & physiological capacity in human populations. Assessment: Self-Design Laboratory Presentation (40%) and Examination (60%) Endocrinology And Reproduction Module Code FHHS606 Level 6 Semester 2
6 Pre-requisites: 3HHS505 Physiology for Health Sciences and 3HHS501 Cell Communication This module is designed to give you a sound background to human endocrinology and an introduction to human reproductive endocrinology and physiology. The reproductive axis will be used to illustrate and reinforce understanding of the general concepts of endocrinology. Assessment: Group Work Assignment (40%) and Examination (60%) Forensic Science in the courts Module Code FMAB600 Level 6 Semester 2 Pre-requisites: Eligibility for Level 6 modules. This module allows students to examine the role of forensic scientists in the courts. Topics include aspects of the justice systems and court procedures; the oversight of forensic evidence; the implications of Human Rights Act 1998 for forensic experts and for the National DNA Database; expert witnesses and presentation of evidence; and ethics for forensic biologists. Students will have the opportunity to visit courts. Assessment: Expert Witness Statement and Moot (40%) and Examination (60%)
