1 The Nottingham Masters Scholarship (Round 2) Application form and guidance notes This is the application form for round 2 of applications. You should not complete this form if you have already applied to the scheme for 2015 entry. Before completing the application form please read the following guidance notes. If you require these notes and the accompanying application form in an alternative format (e.g. Braille, large font) please call Financial Support on or us at bursaries@nottingham.ac.uk About this scheme For 2015 entry, the University has 175 new scholarships of 10,000 available for Masters students from under-represented groups. Jointly funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) the Nottingham Masters Scholarship not only presents an opportunity to attract further top academic talent to our taught Masters programmes but will also enhance the diversity of our university community. As with any financial support, there are a number of criteria that applicants must meet. Applicants to the scheme will need to be progressing from an undergraduate course for which they were charged the higher tuition fee rate (applicable since ) and be classed as a Home/EU student. Candidates will also need to be from a group that is evidentially under-represented among our taught masters population. Please see below for full criteria. Who can apply for this scheme? Core criteria The following are the core criteria for this fund. You must fulfil all of them to be eligible to apply. You must: Be progressing from an undergraduate course for which you were charged the higher tuition fee applying since Have an offer from The University of Nottingham to undertake a HEFCE-funded* masters course in any subject in autumn 2015, either on a full-time or a part-time basis, for a maximum of two years Be domiciled in the UK or European Union (EU) Be from a group that is evidentially under-represented among the institution s taught masters population (please see page 2 for further information) Not be already qualified at masters or PhD level *Students on courses funded/part funded by public bodies (e.g. NHS) are not eligible for this scheme. 1

2 Under-represented groups In addition to the Core Criteria you must fulfil at least one of the following: You are a care leaver that is, were in public care for a minimum of three months prior to your entrance to university in 2012 You were in receipt of government funding in the form of a full maintenance grant and/ or a National Scholarship Programme during the first year of your undergraduate study (2012) You are woman with an offer for one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses listed on page 4 You have a disability, long-term medical condition or specific learning difficulty You are from a Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) group Additional (non-essential) criteria which may be considered Current University of Nottingham third year undergraduate students (graduating Summer 2015) Candidates who have undertaken pre-entry activities with the University prior to their undergraduate course (e.g. Summer School attendance, Master class attendance etc.) Assessment process We expect competition for these scholarships to be very high meaning applicants who meet multiple criteria are most likely to be successful. Applications will be assessed in line with our overall aim of increasing participation from under-represented groups and the University reserves the right to apply such criteria as we deem appropriate to achieve this aim in choosing between equally scoring candidates. The decision of the University is final. When should you apply? You should apply as soon as you have an offer for a place on a relevant course at The University of Nottingham and before the scheme deadline of 2nd August How should you apply? 3 How will the award paid, if successful? If your application is successful, your 10,000 award will be divided into a 5,000 contribution towards your tuition fee and a 5,000 cash award, subject to your registering on the relevant course in autumn For part-time students this award will be split over two academic years. The cash award will be paid in two equal instalments, in October and February. Failure to progress to the second semester will mean your award will be withdrawn and the remaining instalment will not be paid. How will you know if you have been successful? The University will you within 4 weeks of the closing date to confirm whether or not you have been made a provisional award. A provisional award will become a full award subject to your meeting your course offer and once you register on the relevant course. If we are unable to make a provisional award at the initial stage we will you to let you know whether your application is unsuccessful, or whether you are a reserve candidate. Reserve candidate awards will be made subject to some applicants who are offered a provisional award not meeting the terms of, or declining, their course offer, and subject to the reserve candidate meeting the terms of their offer. Being a reserve candidate is no guarantee of a successful outcome. Core criteria To be eligible you must be able to answer yes to all of the following questions: Will you be progressing from an undergraduate course for which you were charged the higher tuition fee applying since ? * No Do you have an offer from The University of Nottingham to undertake a HEFCE funded masters course in autumn 2015, either on a full-time or a part-time basis, for a maximum of two years? No Do you meet the residency requirements for a home or European Union student? No Can you confirm that you are not already qualified at masters and/or PhD level? No Evidence required: A copy of your Student Finance Financial Notification for 2014/15, or documentation from the University you attended in 2014/15, confirming your tuition fee arrangements for that academic year. *The following categories of students are not eligible for a PSS award: Students from Wales who entered undergraduate study from September 2012, as the Welsh Government provided tuition fee grants to all Welsh students to cover the increase in fees Students from EU countries outside the UK who entered undergraduate study from September 2012 at an institution in Wales, if they were in receipt of a tuition fee grant from the Student Loans Company that covered the increase in fees Students from Scotland or other EU countries outside the UK who entered undergraduate study from September 2012 at an institution in Scotland, if their fees were paid for them by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland Students from Northern Ireland or other EU countries outside the UK who entered undergraduate study from September 2012 at an institution in Northern Ireland Students who studied for their undergraduate degree outside the UK. 6

Under-represented groups To be eligible for the scheme at least one of the following must apply to you (indicate yes to all that apply): Do you have a disability, long-term medical condition or specific learning difficulty? Evidence required: Proof that you were in receipt of Disabled Student Allowance during your undergraduate study, or appropriate medical evidence. Were you in public care for a minimum of three months prior to your entry to university in 2012? Evidence required: A copy of a letter from your Local Authority on headed paper confirming this, or similar official evidence. If you were in receipt of University of Nottingham Care Leavers support no evidence is required. Were you in receipt of a full Student Loans Company Maintenance Grant and/or a National Scholarship Programme (NSP) award during your first year of undergraduate study (2012)? Evidence required: A copy of your Financial Notification for the academic year in question. To prove receipt of NSP you will need to provide a letter from your previous institution confirming this, (unless you received the award from The University of Nottingham, where no evidence is required). Are you a woman with an offer to study one of the specified STEM courses on page 4? Would you describe yourself as being from a Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) group Please state your ethnicity (describe using the examples on page 3 as a guide), or simply leave blank if you would rather not say 7

Applications are assessed after the closing date and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by within 4 weeks of the closing date.
