5 Overview Avid Interplay ReadMe Overview You can add an optional Storage Expansion kit that adds two 1 Terabyte (TB) disk drives to the Interplay Stream Server. This option provides added storage space for the QuickTime Reference movies created by the Interplay Stream Server. This document covers the following topics: Backing Up Your Existing Stream Server Files Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS3000 Adding a Storage Expansion Kit to an SR2500 Recreating the Network Share on the Stream Server Backing Up Your Existing Stream Server Files If you add the expansion kit drives as described in this document you should not lose the existing files on the original disks. However, as a precaution, you should back up your Streaming Server files before you begin the upgrade. To back up the Stream Server files: t Copy the contents of the following folder to a different folder or to a different computer: \\hostname\wg_streams$ 5

6 Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS3000 This procedure describes how to add the expansion kit to an AS3000 server. You add the new drives to drive carriers 3 and 4 as shown in the following illustration. ID Drive carriers 3 and 4 If you are installing the expansion kit on an existing AS3000 Stream Server you must create a new network share for the QuickTime reference movies. Use one of the following techniques to create the new share: Leave the Stream Server installation intact and recreate the share after you add the expansion kit. Use the Stream Server installer to create the new network share. This involves uninstalling and then reinstalling the Stream Server. In either case, after you set up the new share you must copy the contents of the previous Workgroup_Streams folder (on D:) to the new Workgroup_Streams folder (on E:). Supported Interplay Software The AS3000 is only supported on Interplay v2.3 Stream Server and higher. For releases higher than v2.3, check the appropriate Interplay Readme for additional information. 7 Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS3000 Installing the Expansion Kit and Leaving the Existing Stream Server Installation Intact This section describes how to install the expansion kit without uninstalling the Stream Server software. This is the fastest method for installing the expansion kit. To install the expansion kit without uninstalling the Stream Server: 1. Back up the Stream Server files. See Backing Up Your Existing Stream Server Files on page Install the expansion kit. See Installing the Expansion Kit and Creating a New Volume on page Create a new network share on the new volume. See Recreating the Network Share on the Stream Server on page Copy the contents of the previous Workgroup_Streams folder (on D:) to the new Workgroup_Streams folder (on E:). 5. Proceed with the configuration as described in Migrating Avid Interplay Applications to AS3000 Servers. This document is available on the Avid Knowledge Base. Installing the Expansion Kit and Using the Stream Server installer to Create the Share This process involves uninstalling and reinstalling the Stream Server. To install the expansion kit and let the Stream Server installer create the new share: 1. Backup the Stream Server files. See Backing Up Your Existing Stream Server Files on page Use the Control Panel to uninstall the Stream Server. Do not delete the files in the original network share. 3. Install the expansion kit. See Installing the Expansion Kit and Creating a New Volume on page Install the Stream Server software. During the Stream Server installation, select the new volume for the Workgroup_Streams folder. Take care to specify the same Stream Server Execution User as used in the original installation. 5. Copy the contents of the previous Workgroup_Streams folder (on D:) to the new Workgroup_Streams folder (on E:). 6. Proceed with the configuration as described in Migrating Avid Interplay Applications to AS3000 Servers. 7

8 Installing the Expansion Kit and Creating a New Volume This section describes how to install the new disks and create the new volume. Before you begin, decide how you are going to recreate the network share. See Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS3000 on page 6. To add the expansion kit disks to the AS3000 and create a new volume: 1. Shut down the AS3000 server. 2. Add the disks from the expansion kit to drive carriers 3 and 4. For detailed information on adding drives, see the AS3000 Setup Guide. 3. Start the AS3000 server. 4. In the system tray, right click the disk icon with the green check mark and select Open Application. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology application opens and displays the Status window. The SATA ports and disks are displayed on the right side of the window. You should see one Array named Volume 0, and two external disks as shown in the following illustration. 8

9 Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS Select Create from the Icon list on the top of the window. Then select Optimized disk performance (RAID 0) as shown in the following illustration. 6. Click Next. 9

10 7. In the Configure Volume section, select Disk on port 2 and Disk on port 3, and leave the volume size at 100%. 8. Change the name to Volume1 as shown in the following illustration and click Next. 9. Click Create Volume and click OK to confirm the Volume Creation Complete dialog. 10

11 Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS3000 The Storage Systems View section displays the configuration as shown in the following illustration. 10. Close the application. 11. Open the Windows Disk Management tool. Select the toolbox icon next to the Start menu and select Storage > Disk Management. 11

12 The system displays the Initialize Disk dialog box. Keep the default value and click OK as shown in the following illustration. n 12. Open the Simple Volume Wizard by right-clicking the Unallocated area of Disk 1 and selecting New Simple Volume. 13. In the New Simple Volume Wizard, leave the volume size at the pre-selected maximum and select a drive letter. Since the Stream Publisher must access a network share, the actual drive letter does not matter and you can just leave the pre-selected E. 12

13 Adding the Expansion Kit to an AS On the Format Partition page, keep the default options and enter a descriptive name such as StreamData as shown in the following illustration. Windows formats the drive. When the system displays the drive with the name, drive letter, and Healthy status, it is ready to use. The following illustration shows the final drive configuration using the suggested Volume label name. 13

14 Adding a Storage Expansion Kit to an SR2500 You can add an optional Storage Expansion kit that adds two 1 Terabyte (TB) disk drives to the Interplay Stream Server. This option provides added storage space for the QuickTime Reference movies created by the Interplay Stream Server. You add the new disk drives as drives 1 and 3. The following illustration shows the drive configuration on an SR2500. SR2500 Front View Drive 2 Drive 3 Drive 0 Drive 1 In the default configuration, drives 0 and 2 are 500 GB drives containing the following partitions: C:\ is a 60 GB mirrored partition D:\ is spanned across the drives and takes up the remaining storage space (roughly 880 GB). Adding the Expansion Kit Drives 1 and 3 are used for the optional expansion kit. The kit includes two 1 Terabyte drives. As part of the upgrade procedure you extend the span on partition D:\\ to contain the additional drives. This creates one large drive containing roughly 2.6 Terabytes. This document describes how to add the new drives to the existing spanned volume. 14

15 Adding a Storage Expansion Kit to an SR2500 Installing the New Disk Drives c n To install the new disk drives: 1. Shut the system down and remove the power cords. 2. Follow the procedure in your SR2500 documentation to add the 1 TB disk drives to drive 1 and 3. For instructions on installing hard drives, see Installing and Removing a Hot-swap Hard Drive in the Intel Server System SR2500AL User s Guide. The following provides a link to the user guide: de.pdf 3. Reattach the power cords but do not start up the system until you are ready to initialize the new disk drives. The new disk drives must be empty. If not, they will not automatically set up as described in these procedures. After you add the new drives and power on the system, the system will automatically change the drive numbering. Converting the new Disks to Dynamic Disks n This procedure describes how to convert the new empty disks to dynamic disks. After the disks are converted to dynamic disks, you can extend the existing volume by adding the new disks to create one large volume. If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard opens when you power up the system, you can use the Wizard to convert the disks to dynamic disks. Refer to the steps in the following procedure as a guide. To convert the disks to dynamic disks: 1. After the new, empty disks are installed, power on the system. 2. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Then select Storage > Disk Management. Disks 1 and 3 appear in the Disk Management tool as unallocated disks as shown in the following illustration. 15

16 3. Right-click Disk 1 and select Convert to Dynamic Disk. The Convert to Dynamic Disk dialog box opens. 4. Select Disk 1 and Disk 3 and click OK. 16

17 Adding a Storage Expansion Kit to an SR2500 The system initializes and coverts the disks. Disks 1 and 3 now appear in the Disk Management tool as dynamic, unallocated disks. 5. Use the following procedure to add the new disks to the existing spanned volume. 17

18 Extending the Existing Spanned Volume to Include the New Disks This procedure uses the Extend Volume Wizard to extend the existing spanned volume to include the two 1TB disks. To create the spanned volume: 1. Right-click the existing spanned volume and select Extend Volume. The Extend Volume Wizard opens. 2. Click Next. 18

20 3. Select Disk 1 and click Add. 4. Click Add again to add Disk Leave the default amount of space and click Next. The Completing the Extend Volume Wizard window opens. 6. Click Finish. 20

22 The following illustration shows the extended volume in the Windows Explorer. Recreating the Network Share on the Stream Server The following describes how recreating a network share applies to AS3000 and SR2500 servers: AS3000: On an AS3000 a new share must be created either by reinstalling the Stream Server or by recreating the share as described in this section. After creating the share you must copy the contents of the previous Workgroup_Streams folder (on D:) to the new Workgroup_Streams folder (on E:). SR2500: Expanding the share on an SR2500 should maintain the files that are on the original volume. You should not have to recreate the share in this case, However, if you do need to recreate the share, you can either reinstall the software or recreate the share manually as described in this section 22

23 Recreating the Network Share on the Stream Server To remove an existing network share: 1. Right-click the shared folder and select Sharing and Security. The Properties dialog box opens for the folder. 23

24 2. Select the Sharing tab. The following illustration shows an existing share for the Stream Server. 3. Click Do not share this folder. 4. Click Apply and then click OK. The system turns off sharing for the folder. 24

25 Recreating the Network Share on the Stream Server n To turn on sharing for a folder on the Interplay Stream Server system: 1. Right click the folder you want to share and select Sharing and Security. On an AS3000, this new folder must be on the new drive that was created when you installed the expansion kit. The Properties dialog box opens. 2. Select the Sharing tab and click Share this folder. 25

26 3. Type WG_streams$ in the Share name field as shown in the following illustration 4. Click Maximum allowed in the User limit area. 26
