These release notes describe new features, hardware and software requirements, and information you should know before using the File Manager running the Windows 2000 operating system with version 3.3 of Avid Unity MediaNetwork. They also list known limitations or issues when using the Windows 2000 Professional operating system (Windows 2000 operating system) with v3.3 of Avid Unity MediaNetwork. n These release notes must be used in conjunction with the Avid Unity MediaNetwork v3.3 Release Notes and the Avid Unity MediaNetwork v 3.3 Release Notes Addendum. Although these release notes are specific to the File Manager, the information also applies to the Failover File Manager since it must also be running the Windows 2000 operating system.

3 If You Need Help If You Need Help If you are having trouble using the File Manager, you should : 1. Retry the action, carefully following the instructions given for that task. It is especially important to check each step of your workflow. 2. Check these release notes for the latest information that might have become available after the documentation was published. 3. Check the documentation that came with your Avid application or your hardware for maintenance or hardware-related issues. 4. 4 Release Notes Symbols and Conventions These release notes use the following special symbols and conventions Symbol or Convention n c Meaning or Action A note provides important related information, reminders, recommendations, and strong suggestions. A caution means that a specific action you take could cause harm to your computer or cause you to lose data. > This symbol indicates menu commands (and subcommands) in the order you select them. For example, File > Import means to open the File menu and then select the Import command. t Italic font Courier Bold font Click Double-click Right-click This symbol indicates a single-step procedure. Multiple arrows in a list indicate that you perform one of the actions listed. Italic font is used to emphasize certain words and to indicate variables. Courier Bold font identifies text that you type. Quickly press and release the left mouse button (Windows) or the mouse button (Macintosh). Click the left mouse button (Windows) or the mouse button (Macintosh) twice rapidly. Quickly press and release the right mouse button (Windows only). 4

5 Using the File Manager on the Windows 2000 Operat- Using the File Manager on the Windows 2000 Operating System Avid supports the use of the Windows 2000 Professional operating system on Avid Unity MediaNetwork v3.3 systems using only the SR2200 File Manager, with 3 GB of memory. Earlier versions of MediaNetwork or the SR2200 File Manager with less than 3 GB of memory do not support the use of the Windows 2000 operating system. Using the Windows 2000 operating system allows you to: Use the features of the Windows 2000 operating system. Swap a disk drive in the MEDIArray ZX with power on. Increase the number of drives available for use in a MediaNetwork when using the Avid MEDIArray ZX as storage elements. However, the increase in the number of drives available also changes the the limit of files available for use. See MEDIArray ZX Drive Counts Using the Windows 2000 Operating System on page 8. This section provides the following information: Replacing MEDIArray ZX Drive with Power On MEDIArray ZX Drive Counts Using the Windows 2000 Operating System 5

6 Release Notes Replacing MEDIArray ZX Drive with Power On The Windows 2000 operating system allows you to rescan and to locate drives that have been connected to or replaced on the system without rebooting. This feature allows you to replace a drive located in a MEDIArray ZX without shutting down the File Manager or MEDIArray ZX. n To replace a MEDIArray ZX drive with power on you must have the following: A spare drive within a MEDIArray ZX before a drive failure occurs The Windows 2000 operating system running on your File Manager (and Failover File Manager if you have one) The IBEviewer.exe installed on your system The MEDIArray ZX is the only supported Avid shared storage device that allows you to replace a disk drive with power on. If you do not meet the above conditions for replacing a MEDIArray ZX drive with power on, see Removing and Replacing MEDIArray ZX Drives in the Avid MEDIArray ZX Setup Guide for instructions on removing a drive with power off. To replace a bad disk drive in a MEDIArray ZX with power on: 1. Perform an online drive recovery of the failing drive by following the procedure in Recovering a Drive in the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Management Guide. This creates a new, usable drive from the spare drive in the MEDIArray ZX. 2. Select the replaced drive swapped out by the Recover Failed Data Drive operation from the Data Drives group, and then select Drives >Identify. The failing drive will either flash a light during the identified drive operation for 1 minute, or it will not have any lights showing if totally disabled. 3. Manually remove the problem drive from the MEDIArray ZX, replace it with a new disk drive, and wait for it to spin up. 6

7 Using the File Manager on the Windows 2000 Operat- n The new disk drive is now a raw drive. Continue with the procedure and then use the Setup Manager software to make it a spare drive. Seeing the Spare Drive 4. On your File Manager browse to the following location: Install Directory\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnity The default drive for the Install Directory is normally drive D:. 5. Run the IBEviewer.exe. 6. Click the Rescan Drives button in the IBEviewer Window. The IBE viewer displays a dialog box and tells you when it finds the new raw drive you placed into the MEDIArray ZX. 7. Click the Start button and select Programs > Avid Unity > Setup Manager. The Setup Manager window opens. 8. Select Raw Drives in the left panel. The raw drives discovered by the Setup Manager are displayed in the right panel of the Setup Manager window. 9. Select the raw drive in the right panel. 10. Select Drive > Make Drive Spare. The drive becomes a spare data drive and is moved from the Raw Drives group into the Data Drive Set group. 11. Close the Setup Manager. The File Manager now sees the drive as a spare. At this point in the process, only the File Manager sees the new drive as a spare in the MEDIArray ZX. However, all systems that connect to the MEDIArray ZX must see the new drive you replaced as a spare drive before you can use it as a spare when a failure occurs. To see the new drive as a spare drive on servers or clients other than the File Manager, do one of the following: t t For Windows 2000 systems, rescan the disks (at a later time reboot the File Manager and MEDIArray ZX when convenient). For non-windows 2000 systems, you must re-boot the system. 7

8 Release Notes MEDIArray ZX Drive Counts Using the Windows 2000 Operating System A Unity MediaNetwork that uses only MEDIArray ZX storage can be configured to scale beyond 100 drives when: You use the SR2200 File Manager(s) The File Manager contains 3 GB of memory You are running MediaNetwork v3.3 on a Windows 2000 system c Scaling beyond 100 MEDIArray ZX drives is not supported on ISP2150 File Managers. As the total storage increases above 18 TB, the maximum number of files and folders decreases (see Table 1). At 18 TB, you can have up to 500,000 files and 10,000 folders. At 20 TB, you can have around 400,000 files and 10,000 folders. This is the largest configuration recommended for most sites. However, it is possible to add one more MEDIArray ZX to your MediaNetwork (for a total of 8), but this will significantly affect the total file count. At 23 TB, you can have only 86,000 files and 10,000 folders. 20TB is the recommended upper limit for MediaNetwork v3.3 with a Windows 2000 File Manager. However, if you are certain that 86,000 files or fewer are sufficient, you can add an eighth MEDIArray ZX for a total of 23TB. 8

For example, a system with 7 MEDIArray ZX enclosures could instead have 402,000 files and 9,000 folders. If you are upgrading an existing MediaNetwork system to 18.0 TB or greater, you must insure that the number of files on the MediaNetwork system is less than the maximum count limit for the new configuration before you upgrade. If you cannot insure that the number of files on the MediaNetwork system is less than the maximum count limit for the new configuration, you should not perform the upgrade. For example, if you upgrade from a MediaNetwork system with a Windows NT file manager and 6 MEDIArray ZXs (system 1) to a MediaNetwork system with a Windows 2000 file manager and 7 MEDIArray ZXs (system 2), you must have fewer than 399,000 files on system 1 before you perform the upgrade. 9

10 Release Notes Known Issues The following sections describe known issues when using the Windows 2000 operating system and the MEDIArray ZX. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the issue description. When you power cycle the MEDIArray ZX enclosure that is monitored by a Windows 2000 File Manager you should be able to rescan and see the drives in the MEDIArray ZX enclosure by using the Windows 2000 rescan function in Disk Management. However, sometimes the drives in the MEDIArray ZX are not always seen when you rescan the MEDIArray ZX drives using the Windows 2000 rescan function in Disk Management. Workaround: Stop and restart the file manager system software after the MEDIArray ZX has been turned on. The time normalization shown by the IBE viewer is generated by the host system running the IBE program. This allows the host to provide a true time reference to errors sent by different MEDIArray ZX enclosures with time-of-day clocks out of sync. This is not a problem, but if you are running the IBE viewer from more than one host, the time shown can be different on each system. When you have a bad drive (for example drive 1) and perform a successful repair and a swap, the next time you perform a scan of the drives from the File Manager the event log still logs errors stating drive 1 has an error even though drive 1 has been replaced by a drive that has been assigned a different number. This is not a File Manager problem. A software service on the MEDIArray ZX enclosure still has this error logged against that drive number. Workaround: This causes no problem, but when convenient, to stop the log entry and clear the error in the MEDIArray ZX you should turn off the File Manager software, restart the MEDIArray ZX, and then restart the File Manager software. 10

11 Known Issues Failover Configuration dialog on Windows 2000 File Manager does not list the Ethernet adapters correctly. To see the problem on a Windows 2000 File Manager: 1. Launch Setup Manager on a Windows 2000 File Manager. 2. Select File -> File Manager Failover Config. The drop down list for the first and second network adapter show multiple IP Addr when they should show "<Adapter name>: IP Addr: < >" (<Adapter name> and < > are the name and the IP address for that adapter). This is graphical only. The failover configuration seems to work if the IP address fields are set correctly. When two MEDIArray ZXs are looped together, the ATTO 3300 controller board and Vixel ports do not always automatically negotiate at 2 Gb rates. To guarantee the 2 Gb negotiation for these ports you must set these ports on the Vixel switch to negotiate at the 2 Gb rate. n To set specific ports on the Vixel switch to negotiate at 2 Gb rates: 1. Find the IP address of the Vixel switch that contains the ports you need to set to 2 Gb rates. If you don t know the IP address you can use the SAN InSite software explained in the Configuring the MEDIASwitches section of the File Manager Setup Guide to determine the IP address. 2. Open Internet Explorer. 3. Type the IP address in the address box, and press Enter. The Vixel software contained in the switch executes and the Vixel Home window is shown on the screen. 4. Click Login. The default UserName and the default password are: UserName: admin Password: manage 5. Click the Ports button. 11

12 Release Notes 6. Click Advanced in the left panel. 7. Click Change Settings at the bottom of the window. Ports are shown in the left column, with the settings for each port shown in the columns to the right. 8. In the Speed Column (the column farthest to the right), select two Gig for each Port used by the MEDIArray ZX or any 2 Gb capable client from the Pulldown Menu. 9. Click Update at the bottom of the screen when you have changed all of the Ports to the proper speed. 10. Quit Internet Explorer. 11. Reboot the device or client connected to the port changed on the Vixel switch. The first time you use the File Manager to create a disk set on a new system using the Windows 2000 operating system you will receive a memory error from the V30exporter. This error will go away by itself and can be ignored. 12
