5 INTRODUCTION
6 Executive Overview This report marks the second time KLAS has released a Best in KLAS report focused solely on HIT products and vendors that have a multinational presence outside the United States. It includes Best in KLAS awards for Global Acute EMR, Global Patient Administration System, and Global PACS, as well as Category Leader designations for those products by region (where data levels allow). The regional designations used by KLAS have changed slightly from last year and include Asia/Oceania, Europe, the Middle East, Northern America (which for the purposes of KLAS reports includes only Canada), and Latin America. As with last year, country-specific and custom solutions are excluded from the data. REGIONAL BREAKOUT Northern America (Canada) Europe Middle East Asia Latin America Oceania NOTABLE PERFORMANCES A few vendors earned multiple Best in KLAS and Category Leader awards. Cerner and InterSystems each won one Best in KLAS award and two Category Leader awards, while Sectra earned one Best in KLAS and one Category Leader. 2
7 KEY LEARNINGS FROM PACS PRODUCTS TOP-SEARCHED KLAS SEGMENT INTERNATIONALLY Outside the U.S., the top three most searched segments are PACS products, integration engines, and EMRs, in that order. Together, these three segments account for more than half of all non-u.s. traffic on the KLAS website. EMR TENDERS BECOMING INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED Population health has become a major focus in a number of regions (e.g., the Nordics, Canada, and the UK), and healthcare organizations with similar goals are collaborating regionally to select IT solutions that cover acute care services as well as traditionally non-acute-care services (outpatient, longterm care, skilled nursing, dental, and social services). 3 GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS HAMPER INDIVIDUAL HOSPITAL EMR SATISFACTION The inability of hospitals involved in government contracts to individually make changes to a system or deploy additional functionality often leads to lower levels of satisfaction than those experienced by hospitals that contract directly with vendors. Until vendors are more prescriptive in government contracts, providers likely won t fully benefit from what their platforms offer. 3
8 These vendors earned the title of 2015/2016 Best in KLAS a recognition of their outstanding efforts to help healthcare professionals deliver better patient care. The Best in KLAS designation is reserved for vendor solutions that lead the software market segments with the broadest operational and clinical impact on healthcare organizations around the world. 9 UNDERSTANDING THIS REPORT KLAS makes thousands of proactive calls to collect the necessary research for this report. Vendor products are not listed in the report unless there is a minimum number of provider respondents. In every instance, the KLAS methodology includes screening for bias to ensure as clean and random a sample as possible. The most recent product rated by KLAS (at least one Konfidence checkmark): When two or more products from the same vendor in the same market segment meet the threshold of one checkmark of Konfidence, the following determinations will be used: 1. The current product will be the product that makes up the majority of new installations and/or sales in the last year. (The newer product will always be the current product when an old and a new version are in the same category.) 2. In the absence of an obvious product in the above case, the most comprehensive product will be included (the product that a vendor would lead with in this market segment). Not Primary [NP] or Regional [R]: Not Primary is the designation reserved for products that are not the lead product offered by the vendor in the market segment but may still be purchased. In some cases, the product may not be actively sold in the listed market segment. The Regional classification denotes that the majority of data from live organizations comes from a small, specific geographical area. The following definitions clarify the sections in the tables for each vendor: Rank: Ranking of vendor/product in corresponding market segment. The overall score is calculated by using all data from each of the 25 performance categories gathered over the past 18 months for each of the vendor s products measured. The overall average for all questions answered with a numeric rating (1-9) is multiplied by , to reach a total of 76, possible points for these performance indicators. The remaining 24%, is calculated from average ratings for the business indicators (yes/no questions). The average percentage of positive responses is calculated and multiplied by 24 (points possible). These two scores are added together to get the total score, with 100 points representing a perfect score. Trend: Percent increase or decrease from the 2014 Best in KLAS Awards: Global Software (Non-US) overall score to the current overall score. NA indicates that a product was not previously scored.
