Prints remaining data in printer's buffer. Paper Size: Selects paper size for MP tray. Accessible only when MP tray is configured as a cassette. Enter button: Puts selection in printer's permanent memory. Self-test 1. Select "TEST MENU" by pressing the Menu button. 2. Select choice by depressing the Item button. 3. Push Enter button to produce current selection. 4. Push On Line button to return printer to active status. Cover Removal Right Side Cover Removal 1. Raise top cover. 2. Drop right side cover. 3. Lift door out towards you. Top Cover Removal 1. Raise top cover. 2. Drop right side cover. 3. Remove screws. 4. Carefully lift top cover (control panel cable is still attached). 5. Release the screws using a flat screwdriver. 6. Separate control panel ribbon cable and remove top cover. Left Side Cover Removal 1. Take off right side and top covers. 2. Separate front and rear latches located on inside of cover (release front latch first). 3. Fold out cover and remove. Shift: Allows lower labeled buttons (Reset, Continue and Minus (-)) on the control panel to be accessed. Menu: Cycles through the menu selections and returns to "00 READY" on the LCD display, unless problem is found. If different options are added they will appear during cycle sequence. Reset: Press Reset, Shift and Menu buttons and display will show "07 RESET", this clears printer's page buffer and replaces all temporary typefaces and macros with current operator implemented defaults. Press the Shift and Menu button simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds, this will produce MENU OF RESETS. Press the Plus (+)/Minus (-) button to move through the choices. Press the Enter button to select a option. Press the On Line button to run current selection. MENU OF RESETS selections are: Reset=Menu- "09 MENU RESET" is briefly displayed. Reset=Active I/O- "09 RST ACTIVE I/O" is briefly displayed. Reset=All I/O- 09 "RESET ALL I/O" is briefly displayed. Item: Allows you to move through selections available for a particular menu. Continue: Continue, Shift and Item buttons pressed simultaneously produces printing after unit has been offline due to error condition. Continue button also functions in the following ways: 1. Overrides an error condition. 2. Allows you to override paper or envelope size selection. 3. Permits overriding of request to manually feed paper or envelopes. LEDs/Lights Ready: Indicates unit is ready to receive data (on) or processing a request (flashing). Online: Indicates unit is ready to receive data (on) or transferring from online to offline (flashing). Form Feed: Indicates data is in print buffer (on) or transferring from online to offline (flashing). Rear Door Removal 1. Be sure PC tray is removed. 2. Open rear door. Be sure to keep one hand present on back panel. 3. Release door support: a. Carefully pull retaining strap tab downward from printer's frame using needle-nose pliers. b. Raise tab and free from slot. 4. Push on center of door while pressing up on either side to remove cover from hinges. Configuration The Printer is configured with control panel buttons. Error Codes Blank Display Check power cord and source. Be sure CB101 is not tripped. 00 Ready Printer can begin operations. 02 Warming Up Unit is performing internal self-test. Wait for "00 READY" on display. MP/PC/LC Load Add paper to input tray. All rights reserved. HP-39 1
2 OSR 04 Self Test Self-test will print continuously. Press either the Continue or On Line buttons to terminate. 05 Self Test Non-printing section of self-test is in operation. Wait for "00 READY" in display. 06 Printing Test Self-test is printing out results. Wait for "00 READY" in display. 06 Type Printout Prints different characters from various typefaces. Wait for "00 READY in display. 07 Reset Places all printer settings back to Printing Menu setting, and clears buffered pages, temporary soft fonts and macros. Wait for "00 READY" in display. 08 Cold Reset Places both Printing Menu and configuration selections back to factory settings. Be sure all settings are correct before putting printer online. Reset=Menu (09-Menu Reset, Reset Active I/O, Reset All I/O) Follows a RESET selection on control panel. Places all Printing, PCL, PS and Job Menu selections back to factory settings. Erases buffered page data, temporary soft fonts, and temporary macros. 10 Reset To Save Printing PCL, PS, and Config Menus were altered while data, temporary fonts, or temporary macros were resident in print memory. Press either Continue or Online buttons to retain changes in menu. Changes won't become active until printer is reset or job boundary is detected. 12 Printer Open Top cover assembly is open. 13 Paper Jam Check unit for obstruction in paper path. Press either Continue or Online buttons to reprint page or document. 14 No EP Cart Toner cartridge improperly installed. 15 Engine Test Printer is performing self-test for engine. When test is complete unit will return to Offline state. FE Cartridge Err FI Insert Cart Accessory cartridge was taken out of unit while still online. Power cycle printer to clear message. Printer should be offline when making changes with cartridges. Accessory cartridge was taken out of unit while still in an error condition. Insert cartridge back in unit and make corrections to unit. Accessory cartridge was put in while unit was still in error state. Remove cartridge and correct error status. 53 XY. ZZ Error X Hardware Type Number: 0: ROM 1: RAM Y Hardware Device Number: 0: Internal Memory 1: SIMM Slot 1 2: SIMM Slot 2 3: SIMM Slot 3 4: SIMM Slot 4 ZZ Error Number 0: Unsupported Memory 1: Unrecognized Memory 2: Unsupported Memory Size 3: Failed RAM Test 4: Exceeded Maximum RAM Size 5: Exceeded Maximum ROM Size 6: Invalid SIMM Speed 7: SIMM Reporting Information Incorrectly 8: SIMM RAM Parity Error 9: SIMM ROM needs to be directed to an unsupported address. 10: SIMM Address Conflict. Press Continue button to resume operations. This will not configure new memory SIMMs to system. 55 Error Printer has communication problem between DC Controller PCA and Formatter PCA. Press Continue button to resume printing. 57 Service Problem with main motor. Check connections J601 and J603 at the paper feed assembly. 58 Service Exhaust fan failure on DC Controller. 61 (X) Service Parity error encountered when accessing the RAM memory SIMM in slot "X". Try to detect and replace faulty SIMM. 62 (X) Service Memory problem detected by printer. 0: Internal Memory 1-4: SIMM Slot 5: Cartridge 63 Needs Service Problem with units internal RAM memory. Check Formatter PCA. FR Remove Cart 64 Error Unit has an internal service. Check Formatter PCA. 68 Error Unit has detected a problem in its nonvolatile memory. MF Feed Manual fed paper is being requested for unit. Check control panel settings. Check Formatter PCA. ME Feed Manual fed envelopes are being requested. 68 Service New features have been added to printer creating a XX Load Paper or envelope size requested is not available on problem in its nonvolatile memory. Reinitialize the this unit. NVRAM by pressing the Item button while powering on printer. EE Load PC Install Envelope size requested is not available on this unit. Paper cassette for lower stall is improperly or not installed. 16 Toner Low Toner cartridge level is low. 18 Aux IO Init Signifies that the MIO card is in the process of initializing. May take up to one minute before message automatically disappears. 18 Aux IO NT Rdy Signifies MIO card is not ready. To clear display remove card and power cycle unit. 20 Mem Overflow Printer doesn't have enough memory to handle data request. 21 Print Overrun Printer can not process information being received. 22 Error This is an I/O buffer overrun problem. 1. Check parallel and serial interface cables. 2. Check signal protocols. 3. Press Continue button to clear error message display. 40 Error Printer had problems while receiving data from computer or host unit. 41 (X) Error Two pieces of paper may be stuck coming out of paper tray. Paper size selection on universal tray does not configure with installed paper. 50 Service Problem with the Fuser. 51 Error Loss of laser beam for over 2 seconds. Press Continue button to clear error. 52 Error Improper speed level on scanner motor. Press Continue button to clear error. 79 Service (XXXX) Problems detected with the internal controller board. Check the Formatter PCA. 81 Error Check the Formatter PCA. W1 Image Adapt W2 Invalid Pers W3 Job Aborted W4 Job 300/OFF W5 Job 300/LTR W6 Job 300/A4 W7 Job 300/LGL W8 Job 600/OFF W9 Job 600/LTR W0 Job 600/A4 Operator Procedures Printer cannot produce requested graph due to complexity of resolution desired. 3 Removing Memory Simms 1. Be sure printer is unpluged. 2. Position right side panel facing you. 3. Open printer's top cover and remove units right side cover. 4. Remove screws holding SIMM slots door (use a #2 Phillips screwdriver). 5. Remove the SIMMS slots door latch by pushing it towards the front of printer. Common Problems and Fixes Printer producing black pages: 1. Check HVPS (High Voltage Power Supply) connections. 2. Check installation of HVPS. 3. Check primary charging roller. 4. HVPS is defective. 5. Check DC Controller PCA. Check laser drive circuitry for damage. Printer producing faint print: 1. Check toner cartridge. 2. Check print density settings. 3. Check paper finish, conductivity and moisture content. 4. Check transfer roller. 5. Check developer bias. 6. Check laser power. Poor registration: 1. Check paper selection. It may conflict with pickup roller in paper path. 2. Check for worn pickup roller and separation pad. 3. Check for faulty PS1 sensor. 4. Check drive gears. 5. Check the paper tray. 6. Check DC Controller. Printer producing vertical white streaks: 1. Check toner level. 2. Check lenses with the laser/scanning assembly. 3. Check laser shutters. Images missing on right-hand side: 1. Check toner level. 2. Check laser shutter. Printing with small voids: Check the electro-photographic drum. Printer producing random horizontal black lines: 1. Check laser/scanning assembly. 2. Check DC Controller PCA. Printer producing smeared prints: 1. Check levers on fuser. 2. Check media. 3. Check fusing assembly. 4. Check static teeth. 5. Check gears for wear. 6. Check paper path for obstructions. Printer producing distorted pictures: 1. Check paper transport rollers, toner cartridge, drive gear assembly, main motor and fusing assembly. 2. Check laser/scanning assembly. Printer produces black pages with white horizontal white stripes: 1. Check laser/scanning assembly and Controller PCA. Printer produces images that are skewed: 1. Check input/registration sensor (PS1) 2. Check drive gears. 3. Check paper tray. 4. Check paper surface to make sure it can work in conjunction with pickup rollers inside unit. 5. Check weight of paper. Printer producing wrong size images: 1. Check paper tray microswitches. 2. Check for defective PS5 sensor. Printer producing vertical dark images: 1. Check primary charger roller. 2. Check toner cartridge. 3. Check media compatibility. Printer producing large voids: 1. Check laser shutter. 2. Check transparency type. 3. Check fusing. 4. Check paper for damps. 5. Check transfer roller. Printer producing background scatter: 1. Check toner cartridge. 2. Check moisture content in paper. 3. Check print density timings. 4. Check for dirt inside of printer. Printer producing white or blank pages: 1. Check laser beam for blockage. 2. Check EP Cartridge 3. Check voltage on transfer roller. 4. Check charge on developing bias. 5. Check drum for ground path. 6. Check laser scanning cable assembly.
