1 2011/12 Middle School Chef Club Sponsored by Food Services Cafeteria Manager- Penny Labarre Middle School Chef Club meets at Marsteller from 2:45 to 4:45. Meeting dates are attached. We will be accepting 25 members due to supervision requirements. A lottery of application submissions will be drawn on Friday, October 21. The first meeting will be held on October 25. Attached is an information sheet describing the club and events. Please complete the application and return to the Club folder in the cafeteria no later than Friday, October 21. 'Will vary by school, starting immediately after school ends and ending in approximately 1 % hour or in time to get students to the activity bus) MESSAGES THROUGHOUT - Smart Drinks, Portion Control, Increase Physical Activity to 60 minutes/day OCTOBER Theme: Healthy Harvest Choices Key words: Diet, nutrient dense, life style, healthy, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates. Nutrients featured: complex carbohydrates, fiber and vitamin A. Key nutrition messages: Choose: nutrient dense foods healthy carbohydrates (winter vegetables/vitamin A) less sugar (drinks) 30 minutes Discuss: What is healthy? What is a diet? What is a nutrient? What does fiber do for you? Where do you find nutrients? What are nutrient dense foods? Nutrient Dense Game: Pictures of a continuum ie. apple, apple juice, apple sauce, apple slices with caramel dipping sauce, apple pie filling, apple pie. Why did you put items in a particular order? (as sugar and/or fat are added to food that food becomes less nutrient dense resulting in less nutrients that you need every day.) Physical Activity: HIKING - proper shoes, safety, go with a buddy
