THE FACTS & FIGURES ON APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING APPRENTICESHIP is a form of post-secondary education like university or college. But there s a big difference. Apprentices not only learn skills in a classroom, but receive paid on-the-job training with an employer. An APPRENTICESHIP can take two (2) years to five (5) years to complete. Some Apprentices train with a sponsored employer that may pay for tuition fees for in-school training. Others will work in a company as part of their work experience program when not in school. Some Apprentices earn a salary on the job from their first day. Apprentices receive a Certificate of Qualification in a designated trade. 1

Like university or college, the entrance requirements for most trades include Grade 12. (*A pre-apprenticeship is also an option while you are in high school.) STEP 2: FIND A TRADE THAT SUITS YOU There are many SKILLED TRADES available, but which one is right for you? Assessing your interests, skills, aptitude and the kind of lifestyle you want is never an easy process. You should talk to a career/guidance counsellor at your school and discuss it with your parents. 2

3 STEP 3: ENROL IN A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL Once you have picked a trade, Vabis Hong Lam International Vocational College (VHLIVC) will help you find a company to assist in your training during your two (2) years of study and also help you to find employment upon graduation. STEP 4: START YOUR CAREER After completing the 2-YEAR COURSE program requirements and passing the required exam(s) for your chosen trade at Vabis Hong Lam International Vocational College (VHLIVC), you ll receive a Certificate of Qualification. You may then work as a skilled tradesman in your field. After working for 2-YEAR and with an additional intensive 6-MONTH COURSE training, you will have the experience and opportunity to work abroad, Australia and Canada. B. Vabis Hong Lam International Vocational College (VHLIVC) was established on 15th May, 2007 under the business name of Hong Lam Tan Thanh Co., Ltd.; operating as Hong Lam Vocational College (HLVC)-a company of VABIS Group and a privately owned institution. Inaugurated on 25 October, 2007, HLVC has been under operation for about 3 years. The main role of Vabis Hong Lam International Vocational College (VHLIVC) is to provide International Vocational Education and Training (VET) opportunities for the Technical Workforce for Vietnam as well as Canada and Australia markets through upgrading professional skills in a 3

Vocational Education and Training (VET), to be effective, should serve as a bridge between EMPLOYERS needs and those of WORK SEEKERS and this can only be achieved through effective partnerships between the Vabis Hong Lam International Vocational College (VHLIVC) and Industry Stakeholders. The delivery of the CONSTRUCTION Industry Training has a number of unique features and the training environment for these CONSTRUCTION Programs must attempt to match as closely as possible to the real work environment that students will face when entering the industry. This can only be achieved through this partnership approach. By partnering with two (2) International VET Providers, BHI (Box Hill Institute) and NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of Technology), our 5-YEAR VET & APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM focuses on the CONSTRUCTION Industry consisting of two (2) main curricula-a 2-YEAR COURSE and a 6-MONTH SHORT COURSE in conjunction with a minimum 2-YEAR INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE in the following SKILLED TRADES Profiles: 1. MASONRY. 2. PAINTING. 3. CEILING & DRY WALL PARTITION. 4. CARPENTRY. 5. WELDING. Other Training Gap and/or English Language Courses for industry. 5-YEAR VET & APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM 2-YEAR COURSE : These are 2-YEAR Australian (Box Hill Institute & NMIT) Accredited Trade Certificate III programs (equivalent to NVQ 2 in the UK): Provision of the Australian Accredited Trade programs to VHLIVC. Training of teaching staff to the qualification of Trade Certificate IV Training & Assessment. On-going moderation of quality of program delivery. Issue of Trade Certificates III to graduates of international employment type. Compulsory Subjects: 130 hours of per school year (Government-prescribed): IT, Physical Education, Citizenship Education, Law, Military Education. 4

5 Trade Subjects: At least 1000 hours per school year: On campus: 500 hours: learning of theory and practice. Industry practice programs (work performance programs): at least 500 hours; usually at the end of each semester (equivalent to 4 to 6 weeks of work). This is to reinforce the practical skills that students have previously learned on campus. 4 x 60 hours of English language instruction for students, international employment type. Language of instruction: Vietnamese and English. Teaching staff: Vietnamese, and Foreign Teachers (only for English hours). 2-YEAR INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE, Employers of VHLIVC Students: Potential Employers (International & Domestic) are companies like Strategic Marine Vietnam, Blue Scope, STX Offshore Vietnam (Aker Terminal), Meisheng Textiles Vietnam. Strategic Marine Vietnam Apprenticeship: Strategic Marine Vietnam: Ship building company in Vung Tau, a subsidiary of Strategic Marine (Australia). 2-Year Apprenticeship courses for 55 new SMV staff. Welders, ship fitters, electricians and refrigeration specialists. First 3 months on campus: learning basic skills. Then, practical work experience 4 days at the shipyard plus 1 day learning on campus per week. STX Offshore Vietnam (Aker Yards): STX Offshore Vietnam: a Norwegian shipbuilder in Vung Tau (subsidiary of STX Europe). 5

6 One month training plus qualification of 14 welders in accordance with international standards. STX Offshore Vietnam a one-month gap training course for welders to MIG/MAG Plate Welder qualification Provides welder qualification test witnessing service and assessment of test reports. Issues Welder Qualification Certificates in accordance with relevant industry standard (ISO, EN). Provides theory exam service and issues MIG/MAG plate Welder Certificates in accordance with relevant guidelines of International Institute of Welding. Southern Petroleum Construction Company (Alpha ECC): A one-week Gap Training course for workers to obtain the qualification of thermal cutting and shaping of plates, pipes and structural shapes. ADMISSION: The Tuition Fee of 2-YEAR COURSE at VHLIVC is about 64 Millions VND. During the first year, students will be learning theory as well as practical training on school campus without any salary. For the second year training, students will continue to learn theory but will be participating in on-site practical training at the employer s site for a paying salary of about 2 Millions VND/month. For those students with excellent grades and skills from the on-site training program, they may receive scholarships and sponsorships from employers, e.g. Employers can cover the tuition fees for the second year studying at VHLIVC and also paying for the living expenses of those selected students. Upon graduation from the 2-YEAR COURSE with International Certificates, students are almost guaranteed to immediately have good jobs waiting out in the industry; with good job offers for the 2-YEAR COURSE graduates with immediate starting salary 6

7 ranging from VND/month. 5 Millions VND to 7 Millions FINANCIAL AIDS: Students of VHLIVC can be supported with sponsorships/scholarships or Bank Loans to accomplish their 2-YEAR COURSE. There are two (2) following options of Bank Loans: Regarding Bank Loans based on collateral properties possessed by students parents and/or relatives, the students don t have to pay a minimum percentage of tuition fees and VHLIVC doesn t have to guarantee for the loans. Salary after Graduation: 5 Millions VND/month. Amount of Loan: 64 Millions VND. Bank Interest Payment: 34,89 Millions VND. Collateral Property: 91,42 Millions VND. Time of Borrowing: 4 years and 9 months. Grace Period: 2 years. Time of Repayment: 2 years and 9 months. Average Repayment: 2,99 Millions VND/month. Regarding Bank Loans based on VHLIVC guarantee deposit account of 100% total Bank Loans, students commit to pay 20% of the total tuition fees at least in advance and the bank will provide 80% of the remaining balance of the tuition-fee-loans. Salary after Graduation: 5 Millions VND/month. Amount of Loan: 51,2 Millions VND. Bank Interest Payment: 23,87 Millions VND. Maximum Deposit Account Balance: 60,49 Millions VND. Average Repayment: 2,89 Millions VND/month. 6-MONTH COURSE : This is an intensive 6-MONTH COURSE to 1-YEAR COURSE for those graduates from VHLIVC s 2-YEAR COURSE with an additional minimum of 2-YEAR INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE (a total of about 5 years worth of VET combined Knowledge and industry Experience). The intent is to upgrade their existing knowledge and skill qualifications to an international level qualifying for the SKILLS PASSPORT initiative and be available for the SKILLED LABOUR EXPORT Program to Canada and Australia. Provision of the Australian and Canada Accredited Trade programs to VHLIVC. Trade Subjects: At least 1000 hours. During this 6-MONTH COURSE to 1-YEAR Training, students will be learning theory plus practical training on school campus along with participation of industry s international and domestic projects without any salary. ADMISSION: The Tuition Fee of 6-MONTH COURSE at VHLIVC is about 1500 USD: Upon graduation from VHLIVC s 5-YEAR VET & APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM, students will be qualified for the SKILLS PASSPORT initiative available for Skilled Labour Export Program to Canada and Australia with starting salary of 4,000 USD/Month (48,000 USD/Year). In order to join to the Skilled Labour Export Program to Canada and Australia with a 4-Year Labour Contract and starting salary of 8
