The Dan Meyer Sessions We are thrilled to be bringing renowned educationalist Dan Meyer to Australia to work with teachers and mathematics educators in full day, hands on workshops held on August 4th, 5th and 6th. A unique opportunity not to be missed. The sessions are titled Intellectual Need in the Maths Classroom. Dan will describe researchbased methods for instilling in students a need for new learning. Participants will learn how to make the problem solving proficiency strand accessible to students, resulting in engagement and higher achievement. As part of their work, Dan and the participants will construct a website full of resources, including a document of rules for the road easily implemented techniques for putting students in that state of intellectual need. The website will remain online after the workshop is complete. Best PD ever. For real. There were lots of great ideas that I can actually implement in my classroom starting Monday. There were lots of great examples that he was able to involve us in and Dan was so passionate and engaging. The day flew by. Genuinely the best PD I have been to I m coming back! 8 About Dan Meyer As a part-time Googler, provocative blogger and friend of 3P Learning (not to mention a full-time High School maths teacher), Dan s perspective on curriculum design, teacher education and teacher retention is informed by tech trends and online discourse as much as front-line experience with students. Dan has spun off his enlightening message that teachers be less helpful and push their students to formulate the steps to solve maths problems into a global tour-of-duty on the speaking circuit. His talks and seminars are hugely engaging and universally well received. His much-praised TED talk Maths class needs a makeover has won him significant attention within education circles globally. This is Dan s third year with the Love Learning conference season. I teach high school math. I sell a product to a market that doesn t want it, but is forced by law to buy it. Dan Meyer 7 Tickets for the Dan Meyer workshops are strictly limited. Dan s sessions are always popular so be sure to secure your place today. $235 (full day session, including lunch). Attend any Dan Meyer session plus the Love Learning Conference in Sydney for just $430 (a saving of $100)

The Love Learning Conference: Evening Keynote Beyond Busy Engagement is one of the most over-used words in education. It s also one of the most commonly misused. Too often we misunderstand the core ideals of engagement and in doing so, we miss the opportunities for authentic learning to take place in our schools and communities. In this talk Dan Haesler will explore some of the key concepts that underpin engagement, and explore how schools can incorporate them into their communities in order to genuinely engage kids in their learning. Dan Haesler We are delighted that Dan Haesler will be giving the opening keynote at this year s Love Learning Conference, during the Gala Dinner on 7th August. Dan Haesler is a teacher, writer, speaker & consultant. Engaging, thought provoking and someone who pushes the boundaries, Dan has appeared alongside some of the world s most respected educational thinkers including Sir Ken Robinson and Stephen Heppell. He also writes regularly for the education pages of the Sydney Morning Herald. Dan has developed a strong capability around leading positive change to support improved learning outcomes through his work on education initiatives. His work centres around the relationships between engagement, wellbeing and leadership. Dan empowers organisations, schools and individuals to lead educational change. 8

The Love Learning Conference: Morning Keynote Shifting the context of learning: From separate to connected The move away from the factory model of school toward building a community of learners brings with it the challenges of changing the context, approaches and paradigm for learning. What would happen if we enabled learning to be pulled rather than pushed, if control was replaced with empowerment and the individual teacher became part of a high-functioning team. Stephen Harris keynote will inspire educators and school leaders to think afresh about the pedagogic, physical, virtual and cultural spaces for learning. Stephen Harris We are delighted to welcome award-winning educationalist Stephen Harris to give the opening keynote at the Love Learning Conference on 8th August. Stephen Harris is Principal of Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS). In 2005, Stephen founded the Sydney Centre for Innovation in Learning (SCIL), as an active innovation and development unit within NBCS. His vision was to embed innovation into everyday school practice. Stephen received recognition at the inaugural Australian Awards for Outstanding Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), as the Australian Secondary Principal of the Year (NSW). As part of his work with SCIL, Stephen leads education groups through a process designed to improve capacity to vision where education is going. Stephen has presented in forums such as EduTech (Australia), CEFPI (the US, Australia, the UK and NZ), and a variety of international forums. Stephen is also involved in an education project in the northern province of Rwanda, establishing effective ways of initiating teacher professional development strategies. 9

Explore the Love Learning Conference workshops Workshop 1 & 9 Dan Meyer Intellectual Need in the Classroom Dan will describe research-based methods for instilling in students a need for new learning. Growing Mindsets for Success Workshop 2 Dan Haesler I am often asked by teachers, What is the most powerful tool we can get to enhance student learning? My answer - A Growth Mindset. Citing the work of Carol Dweck and others, this workshop will delve into our own understanding of intelligence, gifts and talents. We ll explore the power of feedback and how we can tailor our own thinking, as well as lessons, assessment tasks and reporting systems to foster growth mindsets across our learning community. Workshop 3 Britt Gow Digital Toolbox for Science Teaching and Learning Would you and your students like to use free tools to create cartoons, quizzes, videos, surveys, word clouds, flashcards and other digital products in your science classes? This workshop session will enable you to explore a range of tools and collaborative platforms to engage and extend student learning, with examples from science classes. This session is suitable for all upper primary and secondary teachers, with examples from science classes. 11

Explore the Love Learning Conference workshops Workshop 4 Lou Deibe Shaping the Learning Architecture to Engage and Inspire Young Minds What can happen when students are empowered to choose when, where and how they learn? As a change agent at Northern Beaches Christian School and an inspiring teacher-coach, Lou works with educators at NBCS, across Australia and from around the world to shape learning within a meaningful context. Lou will present a practical approach to designing learning experiences that can be adapted to both secondary and primary educators. Workshop 5 Dan Haesler This won t be on the test If the only reason you can find for teaching something, is that it will be on the test, then we need to find a better reason for teaching it. Some believe that the curriculum is too restrictive, but the new Australian Curriculum provides us with many opportunities to push our thinking with regard to how kids can see the relevance in what we re teaching. This workshop looks at different approaches to create authentic learning experiences. Experiences that take them outside the realm of their classroom and into the community, both on a local and global scale. Workshop 6 Misty Adoniou An understanding of the English language can improve learning outcomes. Success in literacy is dependent upon competency in language. The Australian English curriculum also recognises the difference between Language and Literacy. However two generations of teachers in Australia have limited knowledge of the Language content in the curriculum, such as clauses, phrases and parts of speech. In this presentation, I urge teachers not to give away their strong pedagogical convictions of meaningful and authentic learning as they embark on the dual task of building their own language knowledge and teaching that knowledge to their students. A framework is provided to guide thinking about an effective pedagogy for explicit language teaching. 12

Explore the Love Learning Conference workshops BYOD: A Whole School Perspective Workshop 7 This workshop looks at the key considerations for successful implementation of BYOD from a whole school perspective. Martine Gill Workshop 8 Misty Adoniou Teaching language explicitly through content Secondary teachers have enough to do just teaching the content of their curriculum area. In this presentation Misty Adoniou will explain how content is delivered through language and how language changes according to the curriculum area showing some of the common language challenges faced by students in the Social Sciences, Sciences and Mathematics, while giving concrete suggestions to secondary teachers on how they can teach English language and simultaneously deliver their curriculum content. Workshop 10 Vic Zbar Becoming a high performing school/classroom: learning from the research In this interactive workshop Vic Zbar will outline what the research tells us about creating improvement in schools including the sources of school improvement, the key role of leadership, other preconditions for improvement and success, and the factors that sustain and build on the preconditions. The workshop will include specific strategies and tools that schools can adopt to generate whole school improvement and enable more teachers to work like the best teachers in the school. 13

Explore the Love Learning Conference workshops Workshop 11 Britt Gow Getting the Blend Right Blended learning is a continuum between teacher-directed with no technology to student-centered, 24/7, online access to education. How do we get the balance between the physical and virtual spaces right? This workshop focuses on the learning outcomes and how to decide if technology enhances and transforms the experience. Don t just substitute a keyboard for a pencil, give students opportunities to connect, collaborate, learn collectively and create using technology. This session is suitable for all primary and secondary teachers. Workshop 12 Di Farrell Personalising Learning The term personalising learning is often used to cover a whole variety of things, but what does it actually look like in a classroom? Diane will share her experience of personalising mathematics learning to large classes of 50 students in an open-space, team teaching environment. Diane will share strategies for engaging learners in their own progress and the use of the SOLO taxonomy as a roadmap for learners and teachers allowing for learner driven progress and self-assessment. Although the examples will come from the secondary classroom, this workshop will be useful to any teacher of mathematics who is passionate about empowering learners. Workshop 13 Dan Haesler The ConnectEducator If u don t fully & # and the power they have, then you re slowly becoming illiterate. #edchat How does your school approach digital citizenship and social media? What is your school s hashtag? This hands-on workshop gets to grips with the power of social media. We ll explore its different uses, with a particular focus on blogging and twitter, illustrating how these can be harnessed so teachers and leaders can develop their personal learning networks (PLNs). 14

Explore the Love Learning Conference workshops Workshop 14 Britt Gow Science Learning around the Globe Digital tools allow our students to connect, communicate and collaborate with peers and experts across the globe. This workshop session will explore some of the tools that can be used to establish connections, share ideas and implement projects. We will explore online science communities and citizen science projects. Find out how to get experts to speak to your students for Science week or to support experiments and research projects using social media. This session is suitable for all teachers, using examples from science classes. Workshop 15 Mal Lee Digital Normalisation, School Evolution and BYOT The digital world is having a profound impact on the transformation of pathfinder schools globally. Mal Lee will draw on his research and writings on those developments in the UK, US, NZ and Australia to provide an insight into the remarkably common nature of school evolution globally when schools move to a digital operational base where your school sits on that global school evolutionary continuum and the likely path ahead the educational importance to all schools of adopting BYOT and in turn normalising the whole school community use of the digital. 15
