3 Beginnings: Nuclear S&T! After the Manhattan Project, there was great demand for nuclear engineers but no nuclear engineering curricula at universities! Facilities and expertise were at the labs! Nuclear engineering remained classified! Beginning in 1950, ORNL, Argonne, and Brookhaven offered courses in nuclear engineering to fill this gap 3 3 Managed by UT-Battelle Managed by UT-Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy! The Radiation Lab at Berkeley was both an AEC lab and a campus unit! Model for future joint appointments and graduate programs! In 1947, a southern university consortium established the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies to facilitate access to ORNL nuclear facilities! Model for future university partnerships

4 ORNL has a rich history in graduate education! Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies:! Consortium of 24 southern universities 1947! Brought faculty and students to ORNL for research and training! Access to unique ORNL facilities! Evolved into Oak Ridge Associated Universities (100 member universities)! MIT Chemical Engineering Practice School at Oak Ridge 1948! Helped inaugurate MIT s graduate program in nuclear engineering! Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology 1950! One-year and two-year programs in nuclear engineering! More than 1000 students over 15 years! UT-ORNL Graduate School of Biomedical Science 1967 (now Graduate Program in Genome Science and Technology)! Currently 50 PhD students! Joint Faculty/Distinguished Scientist programs 1980 s Present! Currently 70 joint faculty with 8 universities! University of Tennessee Governor s Chairs 2005 Present! 11 Perspectives from industry Sources Findings Phone interviews with Chevron, DuPont, Exxon Mobil, GE Global Research, and Siemens Energy (typically corporate-level senior management)! Industry hires PhDs for depth and breadth! Traditional science or engineering degrees with a solid grounding in fundamentals! Breadth to apply fundamentals across disciplines (industry assembles disciplines into multidisciplinary teams)! Large-scale project experience and problem-oriented interdisciplinary research valued! Phone interviews with Stanford (Vice Provost), MIT (Moniz), and University of Southern California (Energy Institute Executive Director)! All have energy-related research and education centers! University energy centers are research (funding) and education opportunities! Effective at developing large funded projects (MIT Energy Initiative: >$200M)! Effective at interfacing with industry! Promote interdisciplinary research by bringing together multidisciplinary teams and encouraging interdisciplinary thesis topics! Typically offer traditional PhD programs (none offers an interdisciplinary energy degree)! Experience with interdisciplinary degrees has been negative: Don't sacrifice a generation of students to trendiness! 15 UTK Graduate Minor in Computational Science! Developed in 2007 to fill a need in the emerging academic pursuit! Students in 1 of the 3 general areas in Computational Science! Applied Mathematics! Computer and Information Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering! Domain Science! Will become exposed to and better versed in the other two areas that are currently outside their home area! A pool of courses which deals with each of the 3 main areas is available for students to select from! Currently 33 students in the program 15 Managed by UT-Battelle

16 Internships! This is optional but strongly encouraged! Students in the program can fulfill 3 hours of their requirement through an internship with researchers outside the student s major! The internship may be taken offsite, e.g. ORNL, or on campus by working with a faculty member in another department 16 Managed by UT-Battelle

17 UTK/ORNL Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE)! Developed by a task force appointed by the UTK Chancellor and ORNL Laboratory Director! Based on input from industry and university energy centers! Core courses and degrees from UTK:! New PhD in Energy Sciences and Engineering (ESE), requiring a deep dive! Concentration in ESE for students preferring a traditional PhD! Faculty appointed from UTK and ORNL! Jointly managed by UTK and ORNL (reports to Chancellor and Laboratory Director) 17 Managed by UT-Battelle

Willingness to commit required resources (time, research support, expertise, etc.) to CIRE activities! Expectations of CIRE faculty! Active engagement in CIRE activities, including mentoring, recruiting, teaching, course development, and committee service! A commitment to supervise and support at least one graduate student at any given time, and to ensure timely completion of the PhD!
