1 March 8, 2016 Brian Reams ECOTECH USA, LLC 1313 S Main Street London, KY Subject: Estill County Schools and Blue Ridge Landfill Water Sampling Summary Dear Mr. Reams, On February 28, 2016, a total of 3 water samples were collected by Ameriphysics, LLC at selected areas adjacent to the Blue Ridge Landfill. These samples were analyzed by Eberline Services (Eberline) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which is a radiochemistry laboratory accredited by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program. Water samples analyzed by Eberline demonstrate all three samples contain naturally occurring beta emitting radionuclides at levels below allowable instream concentrations for Domestic Water Supplies listed in Title 401 of the Kentucky Administrative Regulations Chapter 10 Subchapter 031 (401 KAR 10:031) Section 6(2). Two of the samples contain naturally occurring alpha emitting radionuclides at levels below allowable instream concentrations. Table 1 provides the allowable instream concentrations and summary water sample results with units of picocuries per liter. The sample containing naturally occurring alpha emitting radionuclides at levels above allowable alpha instream concentrations received additional analysis by Eberline to investigate the elevated level. The additional analysis focused on the concentrations of Radium-226 and Lead-210 in the sample, as high concentrations of these two nuclides would be expected in frac water samples. Reanalysis indicated that the elevated level was not related to Radium-226 or Lead-210. Table 2 provides the allowable concentrations and reanalysis results for investigation of Radium-226 and Lead-210. Further investigation into the cause of the elevated level was not undertaken as it was not included in the scope of this work. Attachment 1 provides the analytical results provided by Eberline.
