Alert - 2 Series INTRODUCTION The Amico Information Management System (AIMS) provides hospital personnel with real time information on a P.C. of the status of the Medical Gas device. The system consists of three parts: 1. Medical Gas devices (ie: Area Alarm, Master Alarm and Manifold). 2. Polling Network. 3. Host P.C. with PC Interface Card and AIMS software. Theory of Operation The system is intended to provide real time information to hospital personnel on the status of the medical gas pipeline. AIMS is a computerized network system which will poll every medical device in a hospital and display each one on the screen of a Host P.C. The polling is automatic and independent of the scanning rate. The network topology is shown in Fig.1, on page 4. The Host P.C. screen running AIMS will display every medical device as a button, which will be green, if the alarm is normal and red if the medical device has gone into an alarm condition. In the event all medical devices are normal with no fault conditions, all the buttons will be green indicating a normal condition. In this mode, every medical device will be displayed on the bottom part of the screen in turn, as it is scanned depending on the scan speed selected. When all the alarms have been scanned and displayed, the cycle will be repeated again. If the buttons are white in color it indicates an existing medical device with no power supplied or the communication link is broken. In the event an alarm occurs in the hospital, the scanning of all medical devices stops, and the medical device, which is in alarm condition is displayed continuously. In the event other medical devices on the network go into an alarm condition, the scanning of all medical devices which are in the alarm condition (red) begins and continues until all the faults have been cleared. Once all the medical devices have cleared and all the buttons are green, the normal scanning and display of all medical devices will resume. Page: 3

Amico Information Management System NETWORK DIAGRAM This figure shows a typical installation of an AIMS System. Medical Gas Devices are connected to the polling network which terminates at a Host P.C. The P.C. can be installed anywhere in the hospital provided that the maximum length of the cable run on the polling network is 5,000 ft and #18 to #22 gauge. The P.C. can be accessed remotely during unattended operations using standard software not supplied by Amico (i.e. PC Anywhere). Fig. 1 Page: 4

Alert - 2 Series INSTALLATION Medical Gas Alarms The AIMS System will operate with the Amico ALERT-2 microprocessor based Medical Gas Alarm. For installation of the Medical Alarm please refer to Amico s Operation & Maintenance Manual for the ALERT-2. Network Interface Module Each Medical Gas Alarm (Master or Area) requires one Network Interface Module (NIM) to be installed within the local alarm box to allow that alarm to be placed on the Network. Please ensure the Medical Gas Alarm is turned OFF during the installation of the Network Interface Module. Alarm Box This module has exactly the same dimensions as any Alarm Module and hence it can be mounted on the frame of the Medical Gas Alarm. If the frame is fully populated with Alarm Modules, the NIM card can be mounted on the 4 standoffs in the alarm box as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 Once the NIM card is in place, the ribbon cable must be inserted into the connector in order to power the module. This might require the entire ribbon cable connecting all the modules, to be replaced with a longer one, if the existing ribbon cable will not reach. Page: 5

Amico Information Management System Connecting Area NIM: Each Area display module must be connected to the Area NIM card so that the information for that gas can be transmitted to the Host P.C. This is accomplished by connecting one wire from the SLAVE (-) terminal strip on the display module to the LOCAL terminal strip on the NIM module. The first display module (near the annunciator module) should be connected to position 1 on the LOCAL terminal strip of the NIM module, the second to position 2 and so on until all the display modules have been connected to the NIM module. Use #22 to #24 gauge hook-up wire (not supplied). Please refer to APPENDIX - A (page 14). For proper communication between the display module(area Board) and the NIM, dip switch SW 10 on S3 of all display modules has to be set to the ON position. Connecting Master NIM: Each Master module must be connected to the Master NIM card so that the information for that module can be transmitted to the host P.C. This is accomplished by connecting a cable from the 24 pin-female socket connector on the master module to the 24 pin-male socket connector on the Master NIM. The first Master module (near the annunciator module) should be connected to Master 1 on the NIM module. The second Master module should be connected to Master 2 on the NIM module and so on until all Master modules have been connected to the Master NIM module. Please refer to APPENDIX - B (page 15). Each NIM (Area and Master) module must have a unique address as set on the dip switches # S1. The sequence on the network of these addresses are not important. The eight position NIM dip switch settings (S1) are to be set from 1 to the maximum number of alarms on the network and the setup screen on the AIMS Software should then be matched with the appropriate number. Refer to APPENDIX - D (page 17) for dip switch settings. It is very important that each NIM module has an unique address. Having two or more NIM modules with the same address will give unpredictable results. Connecting NIM Modules: To connect the NIM module to the polling network, the network wire coming into the Alarm must be terminated on the NETWORK terminal strip. The incoming wire should be connected to OUT+ and OUT-. The outgoing wire should be connected to IN+ and IN-. The Network connection In or Out is irrelevant, as long as the + and - are matched. Use #18 to #22 gauge twisted pair cable. The four position dip switches (S2*) should be set as shown. Set all switches to off except the last NIM Module on the Network, which should be set to on, on, off, off. The Alarm is now connected to the network. * Note: The dip switches are labeled S4 on AIMS UNIVERSAL Page: 6

Alert - 2 Series Host P.C. The NBS-42 card must be connected with a 9-socket male connector, provided with the AIMS system. The cable supplied has a length of 5 feet, stripped one inch, exposing the black (-) and red (+) wires. Connect this wire to the first alarm in the AIMS Network terminal marked OUT+ and OUT-. Connect the Network cable to the back of the P.C. If the P.C. is not supplied by Amico, see APPENDIX - E (page 18) for instructions on how to install the Network Interface into the customer supplied P.C. The AIMS software runs as an independent application on the P.C. running under the Windows 98, 2000 and XP operating systems. To install AIMS on the Host P.C. Insert the AIMS CD disk provided by Amico into the CD drive follow the procedures on the screen: Detecting and Verifying Alarms 1 Select the Options command at the top of the screen. 2 Click Setup and a dialog window will appear. 3 Move mouse pointer to the Primary ISA Card based symbol and right click. 4. Ensure that ALL active medical devices are powered ON. Click on Enumerate. The AIMS system will automatically poll the network and locate the active alarms. Properly connected medical devices will show up as green buttons on the screen. Page: 7

Amico Information Management System DISPLAY SPEED Selecting Scan Speed The AIMS system will display alarms in three different scanning modes as required by the hospital staff: SLOW, MEDIUM and FAST.
