2 Course Descriptions Dangerous Substances Dangerous Substances are present in virtually every workplace so it is important to raise awareness of safe handling and proper safety precautions. Occupational diseases may result from handling and exposure to hazardous substances so "Dangerous Substances" identifies and examines the dangers. This course looks at the law and the legal requirements for dealing with hazardous substances in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures. 3 Course Descriptions Display Screen Equipment Display Screen Equipment is present in virtually every workplace so it is important to raise awareness of safe usage and proper safety precautions. "Display Screen Equipment" looks at the law and the legal requirements for operating visual display equipment in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures. "Display Screen Equipment" examines ergonomics as a means of managing VDU usage and looks at the health issues involved with a view to protecting the health of the user. Provide information on the safe use of visual display equipment Examine the law as it applies to visual display equipment and to look at ergonomics as a means of preventing long term physical damage On completion of this course you will be understand that visual display equipment needs to be used according to the safety guidelines to avoid short term discomfort and long term injury You will be able to perform a basic risk assessment and set up risk preventative measures in the workplace, including managing office furniture and VDU settings Introduction to Display Screen Equipment The Legal Aspect Employer s Responsibilities Ergonomics VDU s and Health 3

4 Course Descriptions Electricity Electricity is of great benefit when used correctly but can be extremely dangerous if misused so this course focuses on electrical injuries, dangerous situations and appropriate precautions. "Electricity" looks at the law and the legal requirements for dealing with electricity and electrical equipment in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures. Promote electrical safety in the workplace and at home The dangers of misuse are identified Safety issues are brought to the fore with particular attention to dangerous situations and potential injuries On completion of this course you will have a firm grasp of the potential hazards involved in using electricity, including dangerous situations and safety precautions You will understand the need for Risk Assessment strategies and know how to apply such an assessment to reduce risks to yourself and others You will know which injuries can be caused by electricity and how to deal with them, including basic first aid and the after effects of electric shock Electricity can be Dangerous Risk Assessment Precautions Electrical Injuries Dangerous Situations 4

5 Course Descriptions Fire Fire is a hazard that no-one wants to encounter so this course looks at what causes a fire, what a fire needs to burn, what to do in the case of a fire and examines firefighting equipment in some detail. "Fire" looks at the law and the legal requirements for dealing with fire hazards in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures. Promote fire safety at work and at home See how to prevent fire hazards and what to do in the event of a fire with particular attention to safety Understand basic fire safety and be able to distinguish the differences between types of firefighting equipment You will know what a fire needs in order to start and take hold and so be able to perform a risk assessment with a view to fire prevention You will understand that there are times when you must call for professional help Hour(s) Introduction Legal Responsibilities Thinking about Fire Fire Safety Equipment Your Priorities 5

6 Course Descriptions First Aid When an accident happens it is vital that immediate action is taken so it is important to have a basic grasp of first aid. This course covers basic and advanced first aid techniques and looks at what to do in the event of an emergency. "First Aid" looks at the law and the legal requirements for dealing with accidents and first aid provision in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures. The objective of this course is to give first aid information to beginners and experienced first aiders alike. Inspire the confidence to deal with basic first aid emergencies and more serious incidents but also to know when medical help must be sought Be able to deal with basic first aid emergencies and understand the legal requirements surrounding first aid provision at work Understand the theory and practice behind advanced first aid procedures such as DR ABC and CPR and will see the benefits that a first aid certificate can bring Understand that there are times when the best first aid is calling for professional help Introduction to first Aid Giving First Aid Advanced First Aid First Aid Requirements 6

In this course we will look at the problems associated with manual handling and examine the best practice for dealing with them. The general principles are relevant to all workplaces as preventing injuries from poor manual handling techniques will benefit everyone. "Manual Handling" looks at the law and the legal requirements for dealing with handling issues in the workplace. The course covers performing risk assessments and establishing effective control measures.
